That 5% of your money as extra damage is unique to the sword and is really great, especially when you can stack some money up boons from chaos or whoever. I've done one run like that and it was quite liberating to not worry about buying anything! It's also a really good counter to the pact of punishment - the pact that increases buying costs is literally meaningless if you're just hoarding money.

I've only got one weapon aspect left to clear with now - the hidden aspect of the fists, which I haven't yet unlocked. I really wish there was an easier way of telling what you've done though, especially as while the game in general works great on Switch, the summary/record screens are definitely so information dense they feel better suited to a large monitor (probably similar to what Fade was saying above about readability on the Switch Lite screen, which is smaller than the Switch right?)

Fade wrote:I prefer that kind of play style, I like being able to dictate the pace of the fight. It's a bit more interesting than spamming dodge every 2 seconds.

Am I right in thinking the dash makes you completely invulnerable?

The first seem very easily overpowered other than their range obviously, some upgrades make the uppercut absolutely broken, I had a run where I was two hitting everything and just making groups of enemies explode.

I don't usually like roguelikes but this gives you enough control it's not a chore, it also can make you feel powerful from the start.

I tried enter the Gungeon and way too much of that game was up to RNG, not to mention the bullet dodging was incredibly repetitive.

Yeah the dash gives you iframes, it is really useful especially with boons to make dash also deflect/sturdy/speed boost.

The level of control this game gives the player is a proper innovation over any roguelite I've played, so few times have I felt like a run was doomed due to bad luck alone. My only criticism would possibly be that as you progress further the level of control almost becomes too powerful and the game rapidly shifts downwards in difficulty because of it.

I do have Gungeon but it never clicked, I've only played a few hours of it and never got very far (certainly never beat a run). But then I really like Binding of Isaac and that is just as much RNG. I think it'll be a difficult adjustment going back to a roguelite with much less control than Hades anyway.

EDIT:

My streak ended at 25 :( Lost to extreme measures Hades, who I haven't fought before. Was bleeding health but managed to get him to the last half of his second stage, when suddenly WHAM Cerberus ran me over :'(

Just bought and downloaded the Switch version so hoping to get some time into it this weekend to see what all the hype is about.

Something I don't quite understand, when you have the choice, what's the difference between upgrading a rarity of a boon it upgrading it's level?

Think of rarity as increasing the "base" boon power. Increasing the level increases the power from the base value but with diminishing returns for each level, so a higher rarity means better growth with level too.

I think. I haven't actually looked this up but that's how I understand it!

So rarity is better basically

Assuming they were aiming for balance the game would suggest +1 rarity = +2 levels

had my second play time with the game, got to Elysium which I am pleased with. made it two rooms there before death. very much enjoying the shield, throwing that thing around is fun.

I hate the archers in this game, I know they put a cross hair on you, but the fact they can shoot you from off screen with pin point accuracy and just constantly fire is really annoying.

with the spear or the shield I can get pretty far into Elysium before dying, so I think when I do make it out eventually, it will be with one of those weapons.

I've only played a couple of hours and, although I got furthest with the shield, it was my least favourite of the three weapons I've tried (sword and bow were the other two).

Epilogue complete! 84 runs and 85 hours.

It's a slightly disappointing ending (I think the narrative justification behind the roguelite structure breaks down after the main ending, and more-so after the epilogue unfortunately), but what a damn good game. Definitely one of the best of the year, and one of if not the best roguelites I've played.

Other things I've done/got left to do:

- I beat extreme measures Hades! Only the once so far, but still
- I unlocked the hidden aspect of the fists so now I've escaped with every weapon
- The only open prophecies I have in the list are the hammer upgrades for the fists (2 left, I think they might need a specific mirror set up to be in rotation...?), getting all legendary boons and getting all duo boons (which just come down to luck)
- I've maxed out most relationships, but still have locks on three of the olympian gods (including Hermes) and Sisyphus, and while I have changed Achille's pact I haven't yet met him and Patroclus again to throw more Ambrosia at them
- I have one more fish to catch, pretty sure it's the third chaos fish
- I have two more cthonic companions to unlock (I'm guessing Achilles has one, not sure about the other, maybe Hermes?)
- I've maxed out all of my trinkets, I'm guessing I have them all and the remaining spaces are just spare
- I've bought all the bedchamber and lounge upgrades, I still have more to unlock otherwise (because damn they are expensive!)
- I've upgraded my badge twice so I am currently Gamma Warden
- I need to enter Erebus 44 more times to finish the journal entry for it, which seems... a lot

made it to styx for the first time, unable to get through unfortunately. shame really, had a good thing going with the spear.

EDIT

have now escaped on attempt number 21 with the shield. did it without dying as well at any point so pretty pleased with that.

Cleared my second escape, this time with the shield.

Still getting a feel for how a lot of these boons play together, and looking at the fated prophecies, I've still got a lot to even encounter so far.

Found out about two things I'd completely missed:

1) The covered up things in the bottom corner of the courtyard (where skelly is). I'd never been close to them so didn't realise you could interact with them!

2) Sisyphus relationship is still locked and I didn't know why so I looked it up and you can talk to the boulder! I must have not followed the prompt to do so he apparently gives

i will have to look into those next time I am on. didn't notice them before.

did get my second escape last night, this time with the spear. had a much worse run that the one I failed on the one before, but yay for having 4 death defiance's at the end.

I can't get on with the spear, it's a bit boring and I don't like the return delay after you throw it
