Hades is a rogue-like dungeon crawler in which you defy the god of the dead as you hack and slash your way out of the Underworld of Greek myth.

Developer: Supergiant Games
Publisher: Supergiant Games
Platforms: PC, Mac, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series

This has been getting plenty of love, and chat in the currently playing thread, so felt it deserved its own thread.

Who else is having a great time escaping from Hell?

I was reading this guide from RPS earlier, and put some of it into practice this evening, and it made a real difference.

I hadn't really used the dash attack much before, so hadn't realised how powerful it was, especially with the shield, charging, blocking, and dashing all over the place, makes you so resilient. Advice to focus on damage boons seems to work well, too, where I'd previously always tried to grab life and damage reducing ones before.

As someone who doesn't like rogue likes, this game has really gotten its hooks into me. It's amazing. Thanks to Taf and Jiggles for talking me into picking it up.

Probably the most accessible Rogue Like game ever. Amazing music and art style. Good selection of weapons. Permanent upgrades and rewards. Loads of options for Combat and it's a very easy game to play. Just pure fun. Out 40 hours in since launch on switch.

Wish my image sig would work

EXPERIMENT! EXPERIMENT! EXPERIMENT!

Don't be put off from using a weapon because it initially feels like crap or even just plain meh to use*: two of my better runs (they came last night), in terms of success and fun, came yesterday and came at the hands of the Twin Fists – which for me were the most meh feeling of the Infernal Arms alongside the blade and rail. Thankfully, this time around, I got lucky with the Daedalus Artefacts and was then able to match those improvements to boons to make the run even more enjoyable.

*That applies even if you've completed a full run or two and thought it was rubbish/meh.

Great game, i always use the weapon that has the bonus gems and darkness points awarded to it. Keeps me changing weapon each run, and avoids me getting in to a rut.

I think im going to have enable God mode now, as i have started to get a bit frustrated at the 25 hour mark.

But yeah, its fantatically accessible and has you jumping back in time and time again. Also has one of the strongest, most cohesive art styles i have sene in an indie game for a while.

If this is a strawberry floating meme... :x

Wikipedia has a great explanation of the genre and how it has evolved from its original definition:

Roguelike (or rogue-like) is a subgenre of role-playing video games characterized by a dungeon crawl through procedurally generated levels, turn-based gameplay, tile-based graphics, and permanent death of the player character. Most roguelikes are based on a high fantasy narrative, reflecting their influence from tabletop role playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons.

Though the roguelikes Beneath Apple Manor and Sword of Fargoal predate it, the 1980 game Rogue, which is an ASCII based game that runs in terminal or terminal emulator, is considered the forerunner and the namesake of the genre, with derivative games mirroring Rogue's character- or sprite-based graphics. These games were popularized among college students and computer programmers of the 1980s and 1990s, leading to hundreds of variants. Some of the better-known variants include Hack, NetHack, Ancient Domains of Mystery, Moria, Angband, Tales of Maj'Eyal, and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. The Japanese series of Mystery Dungeon games by Chunsoft, inspired by Rogue, also fall within the concept of roguelike games.

The exact definition of a roguelike game remains a point of debate in the video game community. A "Berlin Interpretation" drafted in 2008 defined a number of high- and low-value factors that distinguished the "pure" roguelike games Rogue, NetHack and Angband from edge cases like Diablo. Since then, with more powerful home computers and gaming systems and the rapid growth of indie video game development, several new "roguelikes" have appeared, with some but not all of these high-value factors, nominally the use of procedural generation and permadeath, while often incorporating other gameplay genres, thematic elements, and graphical styles; common examples of these include Spelunky, FTL: Faster Than Light, and The Binding of Isaac. To distinguish these from traditional roguelikes, such games may be referred to as "rogue-lite", "roguelike-like", or "procedural death labyrinths".

Hades is a rogue-lite: though you lose the majority of progress gained in the dungeon the game allows you to alter elements to make it more survivable. These tweaks to your abilities persist through death, if you want them to, from run to run. Later in the game Hades also allows you to make things difficult again by introducing a risk/reward feature.

It's a great game. Everyone should try it.

Same. It keeps me trying weapons I might not have clicked with before, and even if you're doing a run where you're not getting on with the attack set you have, you're earning extra currency as an incentive, to build permanent upgrades once home.

I don't think there's a single weapon I actually dislike. The sword is the most "conventional" and I still haven't gotten to gross with timing the charge and release of the spin move, but even that is still good fun.

About £20 - thoroughly worth it!

My post from the switch htread:

Been playing a lot of Hades these past couple of days. Think I played it for about 8 hours the first day I got it - it's been a while since I've done that with any game!

Knew I'd be into it as I really like Dead Cells and had positive memories of Bastion, but it really is great. Satisfying combat and it's great to see a drip-drip of narrative between your runs.

Even now I'm later in the game (comparatively - I know by some standards I'm fairly early on) and reached the final boss I'm still unlocking or doing something every time I die, which is quite contrary to Dead Cells.

Thoroughly recommend it.

I also like how fair the RNG feels. You can pretty much guarantee you'll have 2 Daedalus Hammers most times you get to Cerberus' level, and the keepsakes really let you aim for a particular God boon loadout. Sometimes you get multipliers and combo effects that are just hilariously effective.

They’re all very different games, from what I remember of Transistor at least. The closest game that comes to mind is Nuclear Throne for me.

:x My beautiful streak of two or three escapes in-a-row came to an end. Twice :shifty: Lack of range (still using Fists and so I'm reliant on Daedalus upgrades to increase it and haven't had the luck) and impatience are my current causes of undoing. Will give it another bash tomorrow and then start a fresh run if I fail for the third time.

On a run today, going well, reached Megaera, but I got a different Fury, who kept rearranging the room layout, and she strawberry floated me right up. :x

Feels like I'm going backwards a bit at the moment, because it's been a while since I last reached the Bone Hydra, and I'm not picking up enough purple gems to be able to upgrade any more abilities that I want, (need 500 for the next stage of death defiance for example,) so that's a bit frustrating. Might have to stick god mode on at some point soon.

Just a quick non spoilery bit of advice. Don't get the next level of death defiance. Save 600 for when you can alter Death defiance....

Also have a few runs where your main goal isn't to try and progress/get as far as possible. Make your goal farming gems and experimenting with Boons/weapons you wouldnt normally choose.

Are you on about the green versions? I think those 2 are the only ones left of the currently available abilities I've not maxed out yet, until I get some more keys at least.

I'm not really bothered about farming, that's the trouble. Also doesn't help that I've reached a point where a lot of the home dialogue is now repeating itself. Pretty incredible that it took 20 runs to get to that point, but still, on top of me now struggling to make it as far as I have before, now the character's don't have anything new to say also adds to that feeling like I'm not getting anywhere.

I want to push through, because I've enjoyed everything about the game so far, but it's that old familiar wall I always come up against in these kinds of games. Hoping I can get past it quick enough.

Also, I realised I probably should have spoilered a bit in my last post, which I've now edited in, don't know if you want to blank it out in your quote as well.

Yep - green version of death defiance (I think it's called stubborn defiance) is way better.Being able to use it once per room rather than run is really helpful in helping you brute force progression.

And I definitely got in a similar rut to you! Took me 33 runs to beat the final boss for the first time. I think just using the weapon with the bonus Darkness each time and slowly upgrading things with darkness and titan blood eventually helped me crack it. As did experimenting with Boons etc.

I went into my winning run thinking there was no way this was it, as it was with a weapon and early boons I didn't like. A couple of well chosen Daedilus upgrades and other combos really set them off perfectly with each other.
