Look for glowing spots in water in the levels.

Look for glowing spots in water in the levels.

It's pretty infrequent that they pop up, sadly. Maybe 2-3 instances on a full run through? Once you've cleared a room, there'll be a ping sound to indicate if there's a fishing spot, and it will glow as well. Then once you're there, hit the relevant action button, and it does that Animal Crossing type thing where the lure bobs up and down in the water (or lava, blood, sea of disembodied souls, etc) until it disappears under completely. If you try to reel back in too early you fail and can't try again. You get different fish or various rarities that you can sell to the chef in the bar at your home.

I've really not found it very rewarding, but it's literally a few seconds of something else to do after a room clear, so not too time consuming.

The resources you get from trading fish to the chef are really generous, I think it's always worth fishing (unless you're on a timed run). Especially fish from the surface which get you boss drops.

I think one chaos and one surface fish are the only entries not completed in my compendium :x

Having not played this for a few months I had started to think it was possibly a tad overrated. A couple of runs later and I am totally smitten with it again and have disabled God Mode to try and finish it “clean”.

It seems that you can buy the weapon aspect upgrades through trading gems for keys for diamonds etc, so you keep getting more powerful with repeated runs and farming the base gem stone economy. I was starting to think I had “topped out”, but am pleased to see that does not appear to be the case.

Are you aware you can farm the boss drops (titan blood etc.) with the pact of punishment? Trading up takes a lot longer (and you probably need as many gemstones as you can find for cosmetics and music)

I did not know that, no. I do not have the "pact of punishment" When does that unlock? Do you need to clear the game once?

Edit - a quick google search indicates that yes, i will have to clear the game once. And this is the issue i am finding. I need more titan blood to upgrade weapon aspects to be competitive in the late game, but have unlocked all the titan blood available for each weapon.

In fairness i probably just need to git gud. Will see how i get on whilst NOT trading in all my gemstones. Though i assume the sheet music and cosmetics are just that? They do not offer any meaningful progression?

Ah, I misread and thought you had cleared it just not without God Mode. Yeah, you need to beat a run to unlock the pact. The weapon aspect upgrades can be helpful but they get increasingly expensive (excepting the default aspect) and mid-run boons will probably have far more of an impact by the end of a run.

What mirror skills are you currently using? It might be that changing those up could help a lot more!

Some of the cosmetics have stat-tracking effects e.g. the aquarium reports how many fish you've caught, the pool in your bedchambers reports total kills and escape attempts.

Two character stories that I can think of (and the gameplay item unlocks behind them I believe) rely on cosmetic unlocks: Dusa asks you to refurbish the lounge and Orpheus requires you to unlock the harp.

It's not really anything you need to worry about too much though and the vast majority is just cosmetic.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

When you say what mirror skills.... I think i have just unlocked the last pair of skills (the ones that
add % chance of epic boons and the one that lets you reroll the next arena you will enter)
I thought Zag muttered something that suggested it was the last 2 things to unlock. Everything else is pretty much maxed out (except for the amount of gold that drops and the rarity % on rare and aforementioned epic boons).

What would changing up mirror skills look like?

Fake edit - i have just google mirror of the night and there seems to be gooseberry fool loads of stuff i have never seen? Am i missing how to scroll a page or something? A wiki mentions something about swithcing between red and green versions..... i have no idea what this means?!

Oh... oh

Every talent on the mirror has an alternate version with different effects you can switch to (although you pay to unlock them separately) and they can make a huge difference! I imagine you already have the ability - the arrows icon on the far left of the mirror next to each talent will swap them around individually. This should have unlocked early on from talking to Nyx, you may have skipped over the dialogue or forgotten it.

I think this will help you out a lot!

I nearly missed this when I played as well, the only suggestion that something has changed is something Nyx says, and I don't recall the game actually showing you the new options, but quite early on, each mirror upgrade receives an alternative aspect. Some are really useful, but the most important seems to be stubborn defiance changing to death defiance. Rather than gaining % of health power chamber, you unlock the ability to recover a % of health on death per chamber, which is way more impactful. Pair this up with the one that let's you recover health when you collect darkness, and your survivability should go way up.

Real edit - it looks like i have a bug where Nyx never has the dialogue that unlocks all this stuff. I'm still getting new dialogue from her, so maybe it will pop tonight (snigger). Apparently it can happen if you make a lot of progress early on as it queues loads of her dialogue, but im confident thats not my issue. Im at 32 runs now. How many does it take for most people to get the option for that mirror alternative skills.

THIS is what happens when i dont slavishly follow all the details on a game. Some of those alternative skills look really helpfull.

The wiki says the trigger for the dialogue is earning 300 darkness so it shouldn't take long at all. It's easier than you think to get dialogue queued up but after 32 runs I would be very surprised!

Thanks guys. So maybe i just missed something in the mirror UI that toggles the two types of each skill? Thats possible. The screen capture i saw just now indicated that they all display one under the other (alternating red / green), which i know i did not miss. Perhaps that was an early build or something.

And yes, it was the recover health with darkness ability that i thought could change my game a bit.

Excited to check this when i get home from work!

I know i spent more than that last night in one go, and im almost certain i had spoken to Nyx prior to entering the bedroom.
