They could make an absolute fortune if they bothered actually making Half Life 3 but for some unknown reason they don't want our money.

They can’t make Half-Life 3 now though because it can never reach the insane expectations set for it. As for making a fortune, Valve have made so much money not making HL3 they ended up not having to.

I’ve often thought if a new Half-Life game were to exist it would have to drop the number and appear as something else. Even if this VR title doesn’t meet expectations at least Valve and hardcore fans can say “Well that wasn’t a true sequel”. This is their ‘play it safe’ card.

Surely every loved franchise has the problem of maybe not living up to expectations though?
It seems like a daft reason to not finish the story as I'm sure they can do a decent job of it. As long as it isn't an ending like "It was all a dream!" it should be fine.

*16 hour single player VR campaign announced* "What the strawberry float?! I can't afford a VR headset, so this short ass gimmicky gooseberry fool doesn't count as as a real game anyway. Hard pass. Ill wait until someone hacks the 3D crap out of it. I hope this fails"

*a 16 hour episode 3 was announced instead* "OMG IM SO HYPED RIGHT NOW. 16 HOURS IS THE PERFECT LENGTH FOR THIS AAA EXPERIENCE, MOST GAMES ARE TOO LONG NOW ANYWAY I CAN'T WAIT"

/The internet

Can't wait, it'll be amazing :datass:

Only thing I'm worried about is if they make it Valve Index exclusive.

No way that's happening. There will be enhanced features for the index controllers of course.

Whilst I am massively hyped for more HL stuff, it'll be a shame if this is VR only (which it does appear to be). Back in 2004 one of the great things trumpeted about the Source engine was that it was really scalable for low end hardware, and now it's being pushed solely at high end users.

What's the cheapest way to make Steam do VR?

Excellent news. Looking forward to seeing more on Thursday.

VR

I think the most exciting part though is that Dog will be back.

I strawberry floating hate the gaming side of the internet sometimes.

@Devlin - we're going to get to assemble him like in the robot part of the lab aren't we?

If only I could afford VR. As I said in the other thread, gravity gun + VR = fun.

Semi related tweet:

Games journo/YouTuber Alanah Pierce leaked this briefly on a stream a while back. Ok cool, there have been rumours for ages. But then someone followed this up by asking her if she knew anything about the cancelled Silent Hills that wasn't common knowledge:

VR has been knocking on my door with increasing intensity for the last couple of years now and there is every chance that Half-Life will be the thing that finally pushes me over the threshold and gets me to put my money down.

Imagine if the game starts as a "traditional" non-VR game until at some point you find a suit to put on in game at which point you strap on the VR headset and hear:

"Welcome to the HEV Mark 4 Protective System, for use in hazardous environment conditions."

If I was in the same financial state as I was this time two years ago, this would have been enough for me to drop £200 on a second hand Rift. As it is, I'm not so I won't
