Se you in another 60 years for Half-Like: Alyx II!

In a recent interview with The Verge, Valve's David Speyrer confirmed Half-Life will continue after Alyx's VR romp.

When asked "Does this mark a full return to the series? Should we expect more?"

Spreyrer replied: "Yes. It's probably no surprise that many people at Valve have been wanting to get back to the Half-Life universe for a long time, and this experience has only reinforced that. "In the process of creating Half-Life: Alyx, we've had to explore new ways to tell stories with these characters and this world, and we've discovered a lot of new gameplay experiences that go beyond what we've been able to do before.

"Of course, we'll have to wait and see how people react to Half-Life: Alyx once it's out, but we'd love to continue pushing forward."

I've got my fingers crossed for Half-Life: Dog next.

I'd settle for another spin off in another 12 years.

Half-Life: Alyx: Dog

Where everyone's favourite robotic good boy chases headcrabs and dismembers combine while searching for Alyx.

EDIT: Great minds Karl.

I just checked and the game is in my list on Steam.

There are a lot of very salty people on the interwebs complaining about the VR exclusivity who would throw down cash on other hardware without thinking twice. It's not like we didn't know for the last few years Valve have been very focused on VR as well as them stating they were woring on 3 VR exclusive games.

OH noes, they did something that they said the were doing. Those Barstards!

Every one of them would by a $500 Xbox or ps5 on day one without hesitation.

I don't think that's fair.

That amount of money on top of the cost of a suitable PC is substantial and I can totally sympathise with those who are disappointed because normally I would have been one of them.

A console like XB or PS5 is a relatively "safe" purchase so dropping that money on one isn't too big of a risk.

£500 on top of a PC to run it, for something that might make you ill or that you'll hate? It's a bit riskier.

VR is an elite, enthusiast arm of gaming. No point pretending otherwise.

I think the reaction is understandable. People have been waiting for Half Life 3 for 15 years and Valve barely make videogames these days. They’re finally revisiting the IP and it’s not the sequel people were hoping for. Obviously some reactions have been OTT but I get the disappointment.

If they were doing this after Half Life 3 the reaction would be completely different.

A new Half-Life game should push technology though. Literally the only way a new Half Life could make any kind of positive impact after all this time and overhype is by pushing the boundaries. Just another FPS simply wouldn't cut it.

Far from it. There are plenty of people that can't afford it or they can't use it as it makes them feel nautious or have visual issues. There are plent of people where VR just doesn't interest them. It does however get quite tiresome reading post after post people who feel that Valve owe them a personal debt and that "VR iS a GimMick, how DarE tehy do SometHINg DiFFerenT!"

Like many people, I rolled my eyes at seeing the next HL installment of any description is a VR game, but having watched the trailer, consider my derision rescinded. I might have to invest in a VR doolybopper at some point now.

I'm more annoyed that this game is a prequel. I really wish they'd finish the story with the G-Man they started in ep-2.

If the interview is anything to go by, that story will soon be the focus.

Only thing I'm concerned about is how VR works if you're sat infront of a PC/desk setup. Do I need space to move around or be standing up while playing this? if so then I'd need a bigger tv bu my room is tiny. Might be silly question but I have zero exeperience with VR.

Well said. Both about the cost and unknown VR factors. Also, HL2 scaled really well, so while there may have been people who built new PCs to play it at max settings, that wasn't the only way to play it. But even if Alyx scales similarly, other risk factors remain; this isn't like back when HL2 got released. As for a new HL needing a USP... bollocks. I mean, what's the precedent for that? HL2's wank physics? Unfinished episodes? That's been Valve's biggest problem: they're looking for perfection when we just want more HL.

Btw, I'm not one of the salty types I don't think

Also! A number of PSVR only games have since been unlocked, as it were, to be playable on a base PS4. So yeah, here's hoping!
