Eh, it's alright. Biggest issue for me is moving with those touchpads instead of with sticks. By default you have to click the pads in order to move, but the clicking mechanism on those touchpads has a notoriously high fail rate.
My wands have the issue which means sometimes I'll click the touchpad but won't actually move.
I changed the controls so I don't have to click in order to move, which leaves me with the slightly less annoying issue of sometimes moving when I don't intend to (when I accidentally brush my thumb against the touchpad).
Aside from that it's fine. I can even crush cans by pressing the grip button (though there's no fine grain control over how much I crush the can like there is with the Index controllers).

Also, I'm playing this through the Quest, streaming from my PC via Virtual Desktop, and it's pretty much flawless. Hard to judge the impact of any visual compression, (besides major transitions like opening or closing menus,) when I'm playing in potato mode anyway, but the lag is imperceptible, and performance is steady.

Standing set up, with sick movement for me, too.

Do you think this could come to something like the PS4, mate?

The tracking on the PSVR is so bad that while I'm sure visually it can be done, it would be a gooseberry fool show with those controllers. Perfect 1:1 tracking is needed and PSVR just can't do it.

@citizenerased. The rift controllers have full finger tracking don't they? I imagine you're experience to be the same as index mostly.

The Quest currently has full finger tracking with no controller but the Rift S doesn't as of now. It does however seem the Index use in Alyx is mostly limited to squeezing cans etc so I don't feel I'm missing anything.

I meant the controller itself, I'm sure the oculus had finger tracking before the index did.

I didn't think about crushing stuff :o

Quest has finger tracking, but not in any real games yet. It works on the main menu, and in some side loaded tech demos, but that's it.

The touch controllers can tell if you have your fingers on the button or not, so you have totally open hand, non - index fingers brought in, and non index fingers clenched, and the same separate levels for your index fingers, and thumbs on the joysticks.

I got the game running! It gave me a warning on boot up about the system not being up to snuff, but it runs fine on low

There does appear to be a bug in the game were it tells you that even if you have a beast of a PC.

Just got the shotgun. :dread:

Oh god, this is intense, and the pacing feels spot on so far. The blind panic as you fumble with a reload as headcrab zombies surround you is something else.

Yep. strawberry floating hell  :dread:

Snapping the shotgun closed terminator style 8-) Only discovered by accident near the end of tonight's play that you can put more ammo in it at once rather than just a few rounds :fp:

Like the way you can pop the last round of the pistol out without shooting by sliding the top of the gun, thereby not making noise (useful if you can see enemies and want a full clip without alerting them).

For those using the right stick to turn, I also found you can nudge it back to take a small step back in game, which is quite handy for the slower moving enemies.

Reloading under pressure :dread:

What are the rest of your system specs Knoy out of interest?

RX 580 8GB
8GB RAM

I might try and stream some to youtube later this evening so you can see what the graphics look like with the low default settings.

I just took the plunge on Virtual Desktop out of curiousity. What does the Virtual Desktop Streamer window say your latency is when you're in VR? It's ~60ms for me (~50 if I use sliced encoding, but it's much less stable like that) and I personally find that to be very noticably laggy.

Visually it's great and I'm not seeing any obvious compression artifacts (they're there, I'm sure), but the lag kills it for me. That and the fact that the controller tracking is weirdly sensitive. Like if I lightly shake the controller in my hand from side to side (just barely moving it), in-game it'll start thrashing about wildly.

39ms is what it tells me the latency is. I am standing next to my router, basically, which is wired to the PC. The image compression is more noticeable in chapter 3 where there are more dark corridors, but still works well.

I just got past the bit where you get the flashlight. :dread:

This game is so good :toot:

I just had a big firefight, tried to physically duck behind some cover and sat on top of my pc tower

Just had a bit of a test run of this on the Quest through Virtual Desktop and... it's actually quite good now. Not sure if it's something I did (messed around with some settings, can't remember what I changed), but I can totally see playing the game like this. Just need to find some decent headphones first.
As for an update on my progress (still quite early):
Haven't seen any combine so far, but I'm sure where there are manhacks the combine can't be far behind. And there are manhacks. I'm just about out in the daylight finally, and I think once I climb these stairs I may get my wish to finally fight something other than zombies and headcrabs (and manhacks).

I did fight them, but it was the one in The train junction.

:toot: That untethered freedom.

Not that I've ever played in a tethered headset, so I don't really know what that experience is like, but I can just picture spinning around because I've heard a noise, and getting my neck wrapped up in the cable just as I get a face full of headcrab. :dread:
