He was stood right by my face at one point and I actually held my breath, closed my eyes and looked away

Yeah, but would it be any good if you modded out the waggle mechanics to play in non vr? I don't think so.

I genuinely would rather watch a Twitch or Youtube Lets Play of the game than play it like that. :dread:

It's like playing DDR with a keyboard. Technically you might be able to do it, but it's not going to be anything like the proper experience.

The non VR mod is just crazy to me. Even if you don't have access to VR, why would you do it? Literally every encounter and puzzle is designed around the player being completely immersed inside the world. You can't just strip out the VR and play it with a mouse and keyboard. Utterly ridiculous and the idea makes me unnecessarily annoyed.

May as well get a three year old to draw the Sistine Chapel and then tell all your friends that you'd actually visited the real thing.

This. I’ll admit when it first launched I never thought I’d ever to get to play it but my god am I glad I waited. Watching let’s play or non VR just doesn’t do justice to this. I spend so long just looking at things! Reading discarded papers or the label on a tin can. I even found a plastic tiger and underneath it said “made in China” this level of attention to detail and immersion is absolutely worth the cost of entry (fully accepting it prohibits a lot of people from ever playing). It’s just a shame that no other developer has followed valve to create this full game experience.

The fun thing is that Valve have kind of boxed themselves into a corner with it now. When they do inevitably do another full Half-Life game, you can bet it's not going to be VR again, which is going to make whatever it is feel like a downgrade.

So if they do make more VR games like this it pisses off the people who can't/won't buy it, and if they go back to non-VR it just feels like a massive step-backwards.

They really can't win.

I'm surprised there's been no official VR support added for half life, half life 2 and the episodes. Of course it'll never be close to as good because it's not designed with it in mind, but even just playing key sections remade so you can go through the story would be great.

The Half Life 2 VR mod seems pretty good. Unfortunately when I played it, it only had fluid motion which, with HL2's movement speed, even made me feel ill after only fifteen minutes.

Hitting manhacks out of the sky in VR did feel incredible though!

From what I understand it's had a lot of updates since then, including different movement options. And it's free.

I was just reading about that, will definitely give it a go!

I didn't realise Alyx had story mods, can't wait to try some of them out.

The original half life VR mod is also great. And it runs natively in the quest as well through side loading, so it's fully untethered, no need to link up to your PC, and it feels so satisfying to run around swinging your crowbar, and being able to free point your flashlight.

These things are worth looking at even if you just play the intro parts.

I played around with some of the very first maps to come out. Even then it was fun seeing what people would do with it. But I've not followed any of it since.
I've actually been doing some mapping for Quake/Quake II recently and I hadn't even considered that I could do that for Alyx as well. :D
Might finally try and put together a short single player map, or at least port over the DM maps I've made for Quake and go check them out in this.

Is there a reason this isn’t being made for PSVR2, is the PS5 not powerful enough?

If it was I probably would have bought the PSVR2. There is no reason a PS5 can’t run this considering it runs on pretty old tech from what I’ve seen and came out 3 years ago. I’m assuming valve want exclusive to push hardware sales of their own VR (though the connectivity with other headsets suggests otherwise)

My guess is that Valve just don't see it as worth it, considering how little Sony themselves are supporting their own hardware.

It is if you don't have eye issues and it gives you a migrain after 30 minutes.

I tried battling through for a while but decided it wasn't worth it.
I had to give back my hardcore gamer card
