I was all ready to just nope the strawberry float out of it at the start of chapter 8.

I was so relieved when you came out of that tunnel

Made it to the aquarium, before I had to stop to charge my headset.

The antlions feel really arcadey now with the progressive weak points. It's definitely a change over the way you had to fight them in HL2 and episodes, but they feel like totally different enemies now.

Chapter 5:
Still making my way through the hotel. Thought it might be done, but the path wound back into the hotel. Took on the second electro-dog. Not that bad in such a big area, but if there were more of them or other enemies around...

Upgraded the pistol to have a laser sight. Very useful along with the burst mode, makes short work of headcrabs and zombies. Just need that bullet reservoir now.
Not really tempted to upgrade the shotgun much since ammo for it is incredibly scarce. Grenade launcher is calling me though... does that just use the grenades you find lying around, or is it a separate ammo pickup?

For the pistol, I would priorise the reservoir over burst fire (I didn't get burst fire). It lets you load two full clips in to the pistol. This coupled with the laser sight makes it great for sitting behind cover and taking pot shots at things.

I didn't get the grenade launcher mod for the shotgun until right at the end. As you say, it's so tough to find any decent amount of ammo that I didn't bother with the auto loader, you just don't need it. That mod does use the regular ammo.

For the smg I cannot reccomend enough getting the resevoir type add on for that, it completely changed the weapon.

And finished.

I enjoyed it over all, even if I thought there could have been a bit more polish on some of the controls. Gripping things could be a little temperamental at times, with some things either not gripping or simply refusing to let go.

The part at the end made me really want a Dragonball Z VR game though.

Completed it mate.

Best thing I've experienced in VR, and a really good entry in the Half Life story

It's a really interesting twist with regard to G man's power, and opens us up to the potential of another mainline sequel. I assume the next one might not be VR, but I'd love to go smashing stuff up with the crowbar in VR as well.

Had my wish fulfilled.

Still chapter 5:
Cut some cables, freed a vortigaunt, took an elevator down to street level. Saved and quit. I think what I have waiting for me when I return is a bunch of angry combine.

Ending spoilers:

Been doing my head in thinking about timelines. Presumably, Alyx has had to free G Man from the vault, in order for him to pull Gordon Freeman out of stasis, this beginning Half Life 2. But how does the Alyx that freed G Man, travelled to the future to save her dad, and then got put in stasis herself, then end up back in the world of Half Life 2 and episodes? Presumably also without any recollection of events involving G Man? Unless we accept that the events of Half Life Alyx actually take place in a different timeline than the one we played through in the other games? Knowing Valve, I'm sure we'll probably never get a full answer, but that isn't going to stop me doing mind summersaults trying to figure it out.

I never realised that you could kill Jeff by acivating the crusher you trap him in. If I'd known that at the time I would totally have done it.

I spotted that. It was particularly gruesome.

It does mean you're free to then explore the rest of the area and collect the rest of the resin/ammo that's about, but I think it's still possible to get most of that even when he's alive.

You can go back for the Resin/Ammo even without killing him, once he's trapped I don't think he can actually break free again. I just would've killed him as revenge for that entire section.

Well into Chapter 5 now...

strawberry floating electric dogs.

Loved the fight with the first one in the laundry room. Especially since I'm a lot more confident with the combat now. Laser sight on the Pistol makes a huge difference.

Then that second encounter when it goes into the guy.

I'd been starting to get a bit weary of headcrabs and zombies, so the shake up with the introduction of Combine soldiers (That fight on the platform once you have grenades and the heavy gunners are there :datass: ) and now this Electric enemy is fantastic.

The hotel has been a nice change of scenery as well.

Still Chapter 5, but I assume I'm just about to start Chapter 6.

Just freed the Vortigaunt and fought the Combine outside the Hotel.

That room with the Black Headcrabs (Before AND after you get the SMG). When they start coming out of the strawberry floating walls. :dread:

There's also a special place in hell for the strawberry floater who put one in a toilet. There's a new nightmare.

I loved that part, it had a great use of vertical space which wasn't used as much in the rest of the game. I found myself crouching on edges and watching the headcrabs get taken by the barnacles. I also threw grenades from one level up to another for myself to use as I moved back up 8-)

Keep the updates coming, I want to hear how you've been getting on.

Really tempted to play through this again when it's cooled down again.

Which leads me to believe there's something specific you want my reaction to. :D

Perhaps the fabled "Jeff" that I see being mentioned?

Well I'm not there yet.

Chapter 6 at the moment.
Been working my way through the factory/warehouse and fought a couple of these white mini-gunner types.

Got the Laser Sight for the SMG so thats a much more useful weapon now. Much easier to aim.

I'm really enjoying the combat with the Combine in this. While I'm using the smooth movement (Not had a single issue with it) I do still find myself using the teleport to move between cover. Throwing grenades then following up with the SMG or Shotgun to finish them off is great fun.

Even with the Zombies I find myself running up close and just blasting them in the face. :D

Left of last night at combat section just after you drop out of the building and a load of Combine pop in. So got that to look forward to tonight.

Chapter 7

Well that was special. The perfect balance of terror (Not too much) and stealth.

The strawberry floating lift section.

Then that last section where you collect the three power cores. Not gonna lie I assumed that I was gonna have to fight at least one Electric Dog with Jeff bearing down on me, but I was thankful that didn't happen.

Bonus point for being able to put on the breath filter and nullifying the spores. :datass:

Not that part specifically, but I was looking forward to your opinions. :toot:

I find every part of the game has it's own distinct theme, and they're all progressively more complex and immersive.

The bit you're talking about:

I loved it. It was so clever having to hold your real hand to your mouth to stop coughing, or as you say putting a mask on. When you trap him in that sliding door and think you're done, then start hacking and realise you not only have to let him out, but go back in there WITH him :dread: . The best bit of the whole section for me was when you're looking through for the 3 cores, and you open a cupboard on it's side high up and a strawberry floating bottle slides out. I instinctly caught it with the free hand, and then something else fell and made a noise. Fuuuuuck. The other one being the jammed shutter door that I had to partially open. I did it by holding the crank open with my right hand and crouching to reach the stuff with my left, all with him walking around rig t by me. Great stuff. Of course once you trap him you can just go back and easily clear that whole bit of resources. Did you crush him? I did :datass:

Thought I'd posted more yesterday, but apparently not.

Made it up to Chapter 10 now.

I'm just past the big fight in the train yard with all the Antlions. That was a tricky fight, mostly because I was running low on ammo for just about everything.

Got through it though.

I enjoyed the story progress in Chapter 9 as well. Though I doubt it's Freeman in the Vault. More likely it's the G-Man as the Vault was being powered by the Vortigaunts and it was their energy that kept him at bay in Episode 2. It would also explain why Freeman doesn't show up in City 17 for another 5 years.

Chapter 8 (The Zoo) was really good as well. Nice change of scenery I felt.

It's starting to bring all the gameplay mechanics together now so I don't imagine I've got too much left to go. Probably 2-3 hours I would expect.

Absolutely loving my time with this and I'll be sad when it's gone.

Hopefully the modders step up and give us some fun new levels to play.

You're close to the end now, enjoy it while it lasts.

I forgot about modding, this has workshop support so hopefully we get a load of great extra levels out of it.
