I could possibly agree it would be a positive for the community if she didn't then use terms to describe her role which imply she'd done bugger all research. So as it stands, it's just being done for her benefit and that of her backers to see a huge return on their cash.

Its still a fairly niche/challenging subject for a Hollywood film so I'd imagine having a well known actress in the lead role helps ensure a wider (i.e. people of all genders/sexual orientations) audience sees it.

It's a big issue if you're a gay/trans actor and can't get any parts. And then you see a cis actor take a role that's "yours".

Imagine being such a bad actor you heavily rely on a role to have the same sexuality as yours.

Note: I support LGBTQ+ and Trans rights. If gay/trans peoples' opportunities are being limited because of who they are, that is obviously bad and I hope the right thing, justice, happens asap. Please don't take this half-joke offensively. I know the industry is riddled with issues like this, while this case doesn't appear to be an indication of this particular issue, it could very well be. Though a big name like Halle Berry attempting to positively represent a trans woman is still positive for the community imo.

What was your thought process when posting this?

Her initial comments were pretty bad but it seems like she realised she made a mistake, took time to understand the issue and made a sincere apology. Credit to her for that.

Three things went wrong here: 1. A trans male character is a good opportunity to give a trans man a role so it's always going to be a bit disappointing if that doesn't happen. 2. If you are going to cast a cis actor to play a trans man, it would be more sensitive to cast a cis man than a cis woman, because the character is a man. 3. If an actor is going to take on a sensitive role, they should do their research and not refer to the character in offensive ways in interviews.

It's good they listened to feedback and decided (presumably) to recast the role.

Yep, all's well that ends well. Hopefully.
