Yep, forget all about supporting XBO and focus on making it next gen only and fully utilise the power of the X/S.

Why release a game that they plan on having have a lifespan of 10 years on an old system that will end up holding it back? Just doesn’t make sense

I have said for a while that the game was finished but a fall release should give everyone enough time to polish it up. If Forza Horizon 5 releases next year too (as rumoured), that's already 2 huge exclusives hitting Gamepass.

That said, we're committed to at least monthly high level updates and the next "Inside Infinite" is coming out this week! This month we're talking with members of the sandbox team to share some insights into their vision for Halo Infinite and the work they're doing. To manage expectations, this won't have world premier big screenshots or huge things like a date announce, but our goal is to offer our community more context and insights into our team and the game we're making while we're all awaiting the larger beats and full marketing machine later this year.

I know he has to make things sound good but my god Joseph Staten is making me hyped:

Ah, yes. The combat dance. The beating heart of every Halo game.

For grizzled Spartan veterans this should be a familiar scene: imagine a Forerunner interior; a timeless metallic vault with soaring ceilings. It’s quiet, empty… except for a pair of Hunters, shields up, shoulder-spikes twitching, blocking your path forward.

What to do? That’s easy! I said to myself, the first time I fought Hunters in Halo Infinite. Bait them, get them to charge, then step aside, pivot, and direct as much firepower into their exposed, wormy backsides as you can before they turn-and-turtle.

But when I tried these classic dance steps, the Hunters had something else in mind.

As expected, one of the Hunters charged, exposing its weak spot. By the time I’d pivoted to face it, however, it had already pivoted to face me. That’s odd, I thought. Must be a bug. I tried the dance steps again. Same result. Except this time, the second Hunter filled my face with fuel rod projectiles, sending me scrambling for cover.

Crouched behind a Forerunner pillar, shields fried and health deep in the red, I had a quick think: What’s different? Hunters turn faster. OK, assume this isn’t a bug. What’s the game trying to tell me? And what new dance moves have I got?

As another volley of enemy fire rattled my virtual head inside my virtual helmet, I remembered: I have equipment. Specifically, in the case of more reactive Hunters: I have a Grappleshot. Which means I’m faster and more mobile too!

I don’t want to spoil your own fun of experimentation with a detailed description of what happened next. But suffice it to say: the Grappleshot didn’t “cheese” my encounter with the Hunters, it deepened it—simultaneously made me feel more powerful and the Hunters more intelligent. We all knew the rules had changed. But the Hunters weren’t going to let me dance on their graves without a fight.

This is just one example from a single encounter, but for me it encapsulates what’s so exciting about the totality of the work that Quinn, Tim, David, Brian, Elan, Kevin, and the entire Sandbox Team have done to deepen and expand the Halo combat toolkit. It’s great to feel their respect for the legacy. It’s even better to experience how they’ve improved upon it.

He does say 'sky-jacking' a banshee is difficult to pull off with grappling hook so it's not like Just Cause or something.

As you read this month’s update and look at the screenshots, you might have the same question I did when I joined the team last Fall: What kind of game is Halo Infinite?

Infinite’s world is incredibly large, and its vast combat zones connect seamlessly to each other. Its vistas are filled with adventures that entice you to stray from the golden path story missions. From a distance, it might appear that we’re building an open world game, but that’s not really the case. We’re making a Halo game; a sandbox shooter where our goal is to make you feel like the most powerful actor in a rich, emergent, sci-fi combat simulation.

For example, if you zoom into some of this month’s screenshots, you’ll catch glimpses of the wildlife that inhabits the ring. Halo Infinite’s campaign doesn’t have a crafting system, however, and you won’t spend time hunting and skinning animals to make better gear for Master Chief. Spartans wear Mjolnir assault armor. They don’t need leather boots.

What you will spend time doing is plummeting from a rocky overlook into the heart of an enemy patrol, eliminating their leader with a well-stuck Plasma grenade, using your Grappleshot to pull his power weapon off the ground and into your hands, and then empty its magazine into the rest of the patrol, scattering the nearby wildlife back into their burrows.

Which is to say, we’ve designed Halo Infinite so that you’re freer than you’ve ever been to do what Spartan super-soldiers do best: survey a battlespace, plan your attack, engage the enemy, deal with whatever surprises the sandbox throws your way, and then rearm for the next battle.

What’s different this time is that you have more freedom than ever before to choose your path through the world. Follow a hidden cave system into a well-guarded fortress, wind your Warthog through a fog-filled mountain pass, capture a Banshee and fly to a floating ring fragment across a gap of stars. A strong narrative remains at the heart of the Master Chief’s adventure, and your journey between story missions is entirely up to you.

So then, what kind of game is Halo Infinite? It’s the most open and adventure-filled Halo game ever. It’s the Halo game we could only dream about making 20 years ago. And we can’t wait for you to explore it.

It looks like there is some sort of day/night cycle as they have multiple shots of the same area with different times of day.

I’m excited, but I am still not sure the graphics looks that great? It doesn’t have the wow factor of cyberpunk, or Hitman 3?

Those look much more inline with the original teaser trailer then the gameplay reveal did. Which is good.

Looks good, and Staten certainly seems to be able to talk the talk in a way that the people leading the games haven't necessarily achieved in recent years.

I'm still a long way from the days of the early Halo games where a new release on the horizon would have had me hugely excited, but that feeling is starting to creep back somewhat with the positive developments that have been happening.

It's a Semi open world game with a day and night cycle, this has been known about for a while

Hitman 3 has a wow factor? As Taf said it is more in line with the teaser trailer.

Cool. I didn’t know.

I think some of the lighting effects of Hitman 3 look really good personally. While I love the idea of a new halo, none of the screenshots so far have made me go ‘wow’.

Opinions gonna opinion but if Hitman 3 made you go 'wow' im struggling why these screenshots don't.

I'd like to see what the Series X version looks like tbh.

With the established aesthetic of the franchise, and of a Halo ring in particular, it's kind of hard to target "wow" screenshots. We know what forerunner architecture looks like, we know there are hills and trees and lakes with a general "alpine" feel to them etc. So the best you are likely to get is "really nice looking landscapes" - and they can do those really well, but it doesn't necessarily have the "wow" factor for everyone.

Same goes for the look of the weapons, vehicles, enemies etc. - you can fancy up a Warthog as much as you like but a screenshot of one is never going to make my jaw hit the floor.

The beauty of Halo has always been in the encounters, the dynamics of how a battle between foes plays out, the thrill of contesting an enemy that often surprises you etc. That's the sort of thing that screenshots can't really show and even videos can struggle to capture, you need to actually play it to understand the difference I think.

All that said I think that for the most part this has always looked pretty nice!

I think this is it! Having spent 20 years playing halo since the original Xbox, through to halo 4/reach etc, I think there is a familiarity to it.

Either way by the way, I’m excited to play a new halo. I didn’t play 5, as I went PS4 last gen. Halo (and forza horizon) is a key reason I have game pass, to catch up
On Xbox titles on PC.
