That moment wasn't done in a cut-scene or away from the action though - it was an in-game set piece. That's often the best way of telling a story in FPS games.

A lot of the best Halo moments come from this. The Scarab attacks in Halo 3 or the opening to the Silent Cartographer, are all in-game. A lot of the drama comes from your (and your co-op partners) reactions to these set-pieces, and often the calamitous, humorous ways you survive. Often you need to make the most of your environment, your weaponry and your vehicles to survive.

That's where the drama comes from. Not from the religious hierarchy and political in-fighting of the Covenant. That in-the-moment adrenaline as you try and survive against all odds. Does that last part sound familiar? That's Halo CE's storyline in one line. Simply surviving against waves of aliens against all odds, as you fight your way off the ring.

It doesn't need more than that does it? When you're playing through Master Chief's eyes, what bigger motivation is there than survival? To somehow survive against the relentless hordes attacking you, and fight back, often with overwhelming power (the game's superb weaponry and vehicles meant you were out-numbered, but rarely out-gunnned).

Is that better motivation than what Halo 2 gave you? To clear your name and regain your honour as the Arbiter? To activate the Ark and something-something save humanity?

The FPS is, by its very nature, a very "personal" genre, giving you a very immediate POV to the action. It is why the simple, Doom-style story line of "survive and blast your way out" is so effective. You feel threatening when experiencing it all through the hero's eyes, and you want to survive such a relentless onslaught.

You don't think: "Man, this gunplay would be way better had I read a book about it earlier!". And, despite what Edge says, you don't really want to talk to the monsters either, or understand their motivations. Your human instinct when attacked, is to fight back. And survive.

You've gone very in depth there parksey. It's a Friday night and I can't really construct a response to that. :shifty:

I will admit I enjoyed the books. I probably would have enjoyed them had I not played the games.

Fabian Delph is a banana split.

Parksey's bang on the money. Halo 2 and 3 were so convoluted that I honestly had no idea what was going on.

CE was great. You were fighting aliens on this big mysterious Halo and there was some mention of forerunners and stuff. All nice and mysterious. Then they had to go and flesh it all out and make it bloody dull.

Now Masterchief is fighting an evil crazy dude in a big robot from like 10,000 years ago or something. Also, he's wandering around in a desert with a poncho over his armour for some reason.

Plus the Spartan at the top of the cover is clearly Cortana in armour or something like that.

It's not Cortana, it's a new guy.

In other news, MP at E3? -

Just watched the ending of Halo 4 on YouTube and bloody hell, I haven't cringed that hard in a while. What were they thinking doing that with their first Halo game?

A game announced for release in a year and a half's time? Ive said that I will only buy an xbox one for the new halo game. Two years after its launch it should be about £200 by then.

I agree the CE is the best. All the drama is in the gameplay. Halo 2 was a victim of its own ambition, but i think its misunderstood. Halo 3 tried to go back to the simplicity and gameplay drama of CE and partly succeeded. Reach was good I enjoyed it alot. But Halo 4 was an absolute mess. Flood > prometheans.

If they make an Xbox One Slim available at the same time I may decide to jump in but at the moment I'm happy with just a PS4.

I agree they need to underplay the Promethean's and bring back the old enemies.

Why the ?

I presume you think its too early, but most big games get announced way before that nowadays.

I was a bit vague. The one game that might motivate me to buy the console is being released 2 years too late. Is Halo 5 coming out on the 360?

I also wish companies would stop announcing games years in advance. How about a maximum of 6 months which gives them time to announce at E3 and release at Christmas.
I had Alan Wake on pre-order from Amazon for 5 flippin years because they announced and then delayed :fp: . Then when it finally did turn up I didn't bother playing it :shifty: .

I'd rather they take their time over it, its not like there's nothing else in its place for Xbox One.

No its not coming to 360, its confirmed to be Xbox One exclusive.

And now they've announced the Master Chief Collection for Xbone, coming this year. Halo:CE, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4. Everything in that leak on gaf was right.

What else was in that gaf leak? :shifty: Is that the one that mentioned stuff like a White Xbox One being available to buy and stuff?

I'm trying to find it, but they restrict access to archived topics to members. Pretty sure the guy said Crackdown 3 was coming though.

Aw, so only really Forza Horizon sequel in 2014 and Crackdown 3 in 2016. I'm pretty sure I read a story where a Titanfall dev had that special edition console and revealed it was planned, but canned due to excess stock of the regular console. So while the White Xbone might have been planned back in Jan, who knows if it's still coming.

The White Xbox One is rumoured for Sunset Overdrive with a 1tb hard drive.

Parksy and Stagger throwing out some truth bombs all up in here.
The beauty of CE was its simplicity, the old "30 second of fun" deal. Then Joe Staten got his third rate sci fi boner on and turned it into the worst kind of naff space opera. You want good epic sci-fi, read The Forever War or the Hyperion Cantos. Watch Star Wars or Serenity. 343's biggest misstep with Halo 4 was relying on the hokey mess of the Halo EU for a story. Former human empires and ancient wars (before the previous ancient war the rest of the lore was based on no less...). Rubbish. Course, didn't help the gameplay was repetitive as strawberry float and the new enemies dull ass bullet sponges.

This time last generation, Halo was a console seller to me. Now I'd liken it more to Killzone.

Saw this in the shops over the weekend. Oh what a cheap front cover to a lousy article on the inside (as part of a wider feature).

The type of bait and switch that will get you to buy the magazine once and then never again. Thankfully it's not in cellophane so you can check it out yourself.

So Halo 5 will probably be shown in about 24 hours, with at least 15 months to release I doubt we'll see any Gameplay and probably will be similar to the E3 2006 Halo 3 trailer -

What are your expectation, hopes and dreams for Halo 5 for Monday and the months ahead? I'm hoping we get some previews/interviews this week outlining how the game is put together. I'm personally hoping for a Halo meets Far Cry 3 type open world campaign.
