I thought Nightfall was just a one off feature? Isn't the Showtime series next year the actual show?

Yep, the showtime show is the one I'm really looking forward to. Nightfall is just "Forward unto Dawn part 2" with a bit of a higher budget.

Nightfall is a one off 5 episode show which leads into Halo 5. Where does it say it's not a one off?

It's a mini-series, not a one-off. A one-off would be a single hour to two hour long episode.

Yeah a one off feature would imply no episodes at all, you can't have a one off 5 episode single feature, its a contradiction in terms.

Watched the first episode via the xbox Halo app earlier this morning, I quite enjoyed it. Story was alright, effects great and acting was good - overall, it was pretty decent and left me wanting to see the rest.. looking forward to episode 2 now.

Enjoyed it as well, a bit of a step up in production quality from FUD and a much better start. 1 bad bit that stood out was the elite wandering into a shopping centre.

I really enjoyed it, the CG of the Elite was awful though, I know they wanted it to walk like it does in the games but it just didnt work, looked odd. If this was what the TV series ended being like I'd be more than happy.

The 2nd and 3rd episode were ok but not a lot happened. Can't say I'm that keen on the technology seeking enemies in the show, hope they don't make it to Halo 5.

I thought the second and third were really dull actually. None of the characters are at all interesting, the threat is bland and they've even made Alpha Halo look boring, albeit with justification. I might as well watch the rest at this point, but it's quite impressive when a show can make twenty minutes feel like a slog.

Showtime’s Halo TV Series Starts Filming In October, Filming Location Revealed

It looks like Showtime’s Halo won’t disappoint fans with another delay in production. A recent update has revealed that the network is set to begin production on the series and also seems to have a location confirmed for filming.

According to Production Weekly, Halo series’ current filming status is set for this October. Furthermore, the listing has also revealed the filming location as Budapest, Hungary.

Last month, Pursue News spotted the Halo scoop from the production listing which revealed that the series was set to begin production this fall.

Since the start of this year, fans have continued to receive assurance that the project is not dead. Showtime’s president and CEO David Nevins also said that “[It’s] still in very active development”.

Though fans expected the series to have seen the light long back ago, it looks like the network is still confident over the in development live action miniseries to see success such as HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The project has high hopes since it is backed by Steven Spielberg as the executive producer. Though the Oscar winner hasn’t had anything to say about the project since its announcement, his recent film Ready Player One had a few Halo references that gave a glimpse of what the live action series would be.

Halo: Showtime Orders Live-Action Drama Based on Xbox Franchise, Calls Project Its 'Most Ambitious Series Ever'

Here’s some news of literal epic proportions: In what Showtime is calling its “most ambitious” series to date, the cabler has placed a 10-episode order for a live-action adaptation of the Xbox video game phenom Halo. Kyle Killen (Lone Star, Awake) will serve as EP, writer and showrunner of the series, with Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) directing multiple installments. Both will serve as EPs alongside Steve Spielberg. Production is slated to begin in early 2019.

“Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded,” said Showtime president David Nevins in a statement. “In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe.”

The series will dramatize “an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant,” per Showtime. “Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.

Other characters poised to be featured in the series are Dr. Halsey — likely the Dr. Catherine Halsey who appears in 2010's Halo: Reach and 2012's Halo 4 and 2015's Halo 5: Guardians; and Jenny, listed as an Asian woman between the ages of 18-20. There is no major character by the name of Jenny in the games, but Dr. Halsey is a prominent figure in Halo lore.

Dr. Halsey is the creator of the SPARTAN-II program which produced the elite corps of supersoldiers and their Mjolnir Powered Assault Armor. The casting notice for her character calls for an actress between the ages of 55-65, so it is likely that the series will focus on the later stage of her life when she worked to protect her Spartan creations rather than simply raising them for war.

According to "the /r/Halo subreddit that due to the age it's likely the story will be set in the 2540's so the last full decade of the war and at minimum 15 years into it."

Master Chief has been cast!

Pablo Schreiber from Orange is the New Black and American Gods. He's got the build and in American Gods is quite funny so I don't imagine the show will keep his face covered.

Showtime’s “Halo” series finally has its Master Chief. Pablo Schreiber will suit up as the video game series’ iconic central character as the ambitious TV adaptation takes another step toward finally becoming a reality.

The possibility of seeing Master Chief’s face in this Showtime adaptation, given that it is not seen in the original video game, has been the subject of some speculation over the course of the development process. Showtime’s Gary Levine clarified at last summer’s Television Critics Association press tour that Master Chief would not only be seen, but would be a cornerstone of the series. “It is a key question and an important part of our series,” said Levin at the time. “He is a lead character.” Wednesday’s announcement describes the show’s version of Master Chief as “Earth’s most advanced warrior in the 26th century and the only hope of salvation for a civilization pushed to the brink of destruction by the Covenant, an unstoppable alliance of alien worlds committed to the destruction of humanity.”

Joining Schreiber is Australian newcomer Yerin Ha, who will play a newly created character in the Halo universe, Quan Ah. Quan Ah is described as a "shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both." Ah was discovered during a worldwide casting search and is known for her stage work in Australia.

The Showtime series will follow plots set forth in the games, which focused on the 26th-century conflict between humanity and the alien race known as the Covenant. The show will "weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future."

The series will begin production in Budapest, Hungary in the fall.

So they're going the route of showing his face and giving him a spunky teenage sidekick.

This has the potential to be a disaster of rather epic proportions if they don't treat the material in the way the fans expect.
The character of The Chief will need to be handled extremely carefully as he'll need to be heroic and unflappable while not seeming like an uncaring monster. The shows setting will also be crucial and they'll need to really splash the cash on sets to depict both alien worlds (these are much more alien than those found in Trek or Star Wars) and spaceships.
