Just for once can we have a show about gaming without stupid challenges and shitty gimmicks.
Just have interviews with developers and reviews with maybe a few preview discussions.

They manage to make none-zany film review shows so why is it seemingly impossible for gaming?

Film is a much more respected and understood art form. Despite Transformers.

Thankfully, there has never been a better time to find readily accesible content for any passion you might have. X2 if your passion is pornography.

Boring old fart or no but I’d also much rather see something like BBC’s ‘Film’ show they used to do. Can’t be that hard, surely?

What’s the point, though? We’re hardly starved of news and footage, and any reviews would just be one person’s opinion to be torn to shreds. And Christ, the last thing I want to see on TV is some pompous “expert” dissection of games. Also, devs are too busy crunching to give interviews.

I remember watching Bits, Thumb Bandits, and another one relatively recently, the name of which escapes me (it had Aoife from Eurogamer in it), but they all kind of fell into the same old tropes I think. Don't even get me started on Go 8-Bit :dread:

These days news is happening so fast that even weekly podcasts can feel out of touch, so a programme on TV would really have to focus on reviews, previews, retro stuff, and maybe the big headline news items. But all those things are ten a penny on YouTube. You could argue that there's a more mainstream audience that isn't going on YouTube and so could be reached via TV, but in a way I agree with rinks - what's the point? Feels like the boat's been missed by a long way now.

I think a decent, 'serious' TV programme about games would've worked a few years ago before YouTube really took off, but it needed a channel take a punt on giving it that 'serious' approach, rather than constant jokes about teenage boys in their bedrooms and treating the audience like utter idiots, which seemingly every gaming show ever did.

It was called videogame nation. I really enjoyed that one (Well most of it). By the end it had fallen in to the whacky talking head person says keeeeraaaazeeee thing about a game. But the main presenters used to give really good reviews and features on current games, that part of the show was great.

You're right though, YouTube really has this sewn up, and most people want some screaming twat with a comically sized boom Mic in the shot, along with a crazy t-shirt and Ikea shelves behind them, with all sorts of gaming stuff on them!!!!!

SUP YOOTOOB RRRRAAAAAAAGHHHHHJASAAAÀRGRRGRRHHRHRHHHHH BRRRROOOOOHOOOOOO I'M GOING CRAZYYYYY

Fair enough. I don’t really know anything about YouTube content, or culture. Seems to be full of obnoxious wankers for the most part.

There is some good stuff on YouTube as well to be fair, you just have to sift through a lot of idiots to find it!

There's almost literally something for everyone on youtube, the only problem is finding it. That's the advantage TV has as a much more curated arena. I think having games on TV is still seen as a validation of gaming because its a young medium, but ironically TV about games often comes across as very dated in its perception of the medium (which I don't think is helped when they are retro focused as it perpetuates that arcade cabinet portrayal). What I think people want, as much as that validation of the medium, is a show as a shared cultural experience. When something is on TV (or at least the major networks) it becomes well known; it enters the public consciousness. It becomes, for want of a better description, something that could reasonably be the answer to a quiz question. You can reasonably bring it up in conversation with some expectation of awareness or familiarity, not explaining what it is from first principles because everyone is in their own alogirthmic silo of online content. It's similar to the appeal of a small set of magazines over a million online review sites.

So yeah, I do think a TV show about games has merit. They are however, almost without exception, unfortunately awful!

You must watch an awful lot of rubbish for it to be that bad.

Still, while we're on the subject of dodgy gaming TV shows...

I mean, its exculsive gaming content i use YouTube for, so no matter how classy my subscription feed is, my recommended feed is full or morons with YouTube face.

Am i doing it wrong? Should i be slipping in some viewing i'm in no way interested in to break the algorithm? (Feel free to insert jpeg of Super Hans with ballet shoes and speed).

It always seemed so simple to me:

Take the Top Gear format, but make it about videogames. Have all the nerdy resolution and frame rate talk you want for the hardcore crowd but make it witty enough that the layman can watch it and not feel dumb. Have features where they look at and interview development studios or the gaming scene in other countries. Stick a celebrity segment in where actual famous people who play games come on and talk about their favourite games. Have them play an old arcade cabinet for the weekly high score attempt (something watchable like Ghost Squad or Outrun 2). Do a cash in the attic segment talking about retro gaming and do some tongue-in-cheek interviews with some collectors. I would add in challenges but not of the usual variety. Eg can you finish Soulcalibur with the fishing rod or somesuch. Features write themselves like a look at Otaku culture or what it is like at a busy park on Pokemon Go community day.

The core thing it needs is a group of presenters who are actually trained that way and not just some mugs off youtube. Presenter team? Jordan Erica Webber (from the Gadget Show), Tech Journalist Holly Brockwell, James Buckley (who regularly streams on Twitch) and Iain Lee.

Bits was great. Got better when they replaced that blonde German with Emily Booth since they all clearly knew their gooseberry fool about video games.

Pretty much.

I made the mistake once of watching an admittedly interesting video which toured a cemetery in hollywood and featured the graves of A list stars, it was worth seeing, but my feed ended up looking like a mortuary as a result.
