They manage to make none-zany film review shows so why is it seemingly impossible for gaming?

It always seemed so simple to me:

Take the Top Gear format, but make it about videogames. Have all the nerdy resolution and frame rate talk you want for the hardcore crowd but make it witty enough that the layman can watch it and not feel dumb. Have features where they look at and interview development studios or the gaming scene in other countries. Stick a celebrity segment in where actual famous people who play games come on and talk about their favourite games. Have them play an old arcade cabinet for the weekly high score attempt (something watchable like Ghost Squad or Outrun 2). Do a cash in the attic segment talking about retro gaming and do some tongue-in-cheek interviews with some collectors. I would add in challenges but not of the usual variety. Eg can you finish Soulcalibur with the fishing rod or somesuch. Features write themselves like a look at Otaku culture or what it is like at a busy park on Pokemon Go community day.

The core thing it needs is a group of presenters who are actually trained that way and not just some mugs off youtube. Presenter team? Jordan Erica Webber (from the Gadget Show), Tech Journalist Holly Brockwell, James Buckley (who regularly streams on Twitch) and Iain Lee.

I've heard this idea mooted a few times, and I quite like it, but it needs someone like the BBC or Channel 4 to take a punt on it, which they've never seemed willing to do. Anything that tackles games as a vaguely mature or serious topic, rather than toilet humour and the tired stereotypes, would be an improvement. Not sure on the line-up you've suggested there either. I think the 'Top Gear format' really depends quite a lot on the chemistry of the presenters.

I tell you who would be a good presenter - Danny Dyer. Seems a good chance to remind us of his gaming insights:

Channel 4 let the press know today that this is going ahead, with episodes premiering first on YouTube before broadcast on E4, in partnership with Oculus Quest 2 & Facebook - which will feature throughout.

“The series will see celebrities, gaming stars and super fans all take part in challenges, races and epic fights. Through virtual battles across a range of games, the competitors will try everything in their power to claim a Future Publishing Golden Joystick Trophy. Whilst they compete, they’ll be watched over by the all-knowing GamesMaster.

The production is co-produced by Future PLC’s Barcroft TV and Alaska TV, and will run for three 60 minute episodes. GamesMaster will air TBD 2021.”
