Seems like my watch party streams have re-invigorated interest in the show. :lol:

E4 is rebooting the cultural phenomenon GamesMaster and is seeking a Brand Partner.

GamesMaster will be a social first show, followed by an E4 TX and All 4 box set. The sponsorship opportunity with E4 combines social, digital and linear TV.

The Format

This year, five bold celebrities will embark on a gaming odyssey but only one can go on to become the GamesMaster champion and take home the Golden Joystick.

They’ll undergo challenges, races and fights in virtual battle across all genres of gaming under the watchful eye of the all-knowing GamesMaster.

Each week at least one celeb will be eliminated…Over the three epsisodes, five will become one and the winner will be crowned. They’ll play each other at everything from iconic classics to brand new releases. We’ll also be serving tonnes of extra gaming-themed content to our audiences to keep them coming back for more.

So sounds a bit different from the original format and the mention of "celebrities" is always a negative for me, but I guess that's how they get it made.

I'll be interested to see if it's any good.

Hmmm.

I mean they would probably struggle to put out something worse than most of the shite we've had to endure when it comes to gaming related TV content but it feels highly unlikely that this will capture any of the essence that actually made the original GamesMaster format so good.

I bet all the "celebs" will be people from TOWIE and Love Island and the like as well. :dread:

Although I guess old school GamesMaster was no stranger to the old "get an attractive idiot to play a game that makes them look stupid and or/hot" trope!

It’ll be awful.

This is almost guaranteed to be terrible. It'll be the same old 'celebs', and the same tired old jokes and stereotypes about gamers, all in a not-very-interesting format.

I hope it's still just as bad as that old one we watched the other night :wub:

The nostalgia factor for me is always going to be a big draw. It sounds like this new series is going to be different, only three episodes so maybe it's a trial and if it works a full length series will get the green light and kids/teens will replace the z-elebs.

I can't stand panel shows and that chummy, chummy, chumminess! But would Gemma Collins be better?... It's only five people so surely Channel 4 can scrape together an okay bunch. Now we have YouTube there doesn't need to be a video game show that's representing everyone but a good spirited GamesMaster competition where the focus is not the personalities but the games could be fun.

Some things are best left in the past.

BBC and Sky Sports occasionally put eSports on TV. Doesn't interest me, but that feels more aligned with where the market is now at than shoehorning 'celebrities' into a contrived TV format like it's still 1998. Maybe Les Dennis and Jayne Middlemiss will hand out the Golden Joystick. If you want celebrities or sports stars playing videogames, they're on Twitch, YouTube and Instagram.

People in their 30s and 40s that remember the original GamesMaster are going to think it's a pale imitation, and those in their early/late teens to mid 20s are going to see a load of vaguely familiar D-listers attempting to play Fortnite and lift a trophy they don't give a strawberry float about and think it's lame.

Looking forward to a kid putting on a VR headset to talk to the gamesmaster, then just complaining it's a gimmick.

He always seems to be one of the featured streamers on the homepage whenever he's on.
