There were games in between - most notably DML's infamous 2010 wolfless AYAW* - but the mantle of running the big games after that seemed to go to TAP. He ran two metagames which put real-life board roles as the villains: Are You A Bluehat? in August 2009 which reached a ridiculous 613 pages  (plus a 36 page signup thread!) and Are You A Moderator? in January 2013 which reached 513 pages.

Games after that seemed to be significantly less popular, so this isn't a recent or sudden thing. I didn't play AYAM as I was on holiday but it seems almost as if it was, in retrospect, a "last hurrah" for many players? I know that many of them have long since disappeared from these boards, but it'd be great if a game was the thing to bring them back.

*This was the game that got me interested, I was following along as an observer and couldn't believe it when DML revealed the twist. If you've never read it, I would very much recommend you go to the thread, start at page 260, where melatonin confesses to being a wolf :slol: (no really!) and read on for lots of very reactive reactions

Just started looking back over these now, first point - when did people stop doing introductory music videos for these games? That needs to be remedied ASAP!

Blimey, people are talking about using MSN for communication during these early games - that really dates things!

Still so many of the same lines as we see now being pushed early in these games:

"Target the inactives!"

"Just checking in to say I'm going to be busy but I'm a goodie promise!"

"Why are you being so defensive?!!?"

"Lets just kill X to get it over with"

AYA never changes. :datass:

All particularly entertaining in the wolfless game as well!

The funny thing is about it is none of this has ever worked before, we've never won anything by targetting inactives yet every single game we still fall into the trap.

I mean if I have to explain the theory behind it (again) then I'd have to assume that I'm on ignore.

Ok, so the issue is not that it doesn't work, it's that we never follow it long enough for it to count, we lynch one or two inactives then get sidetracked going after others and it means we never hit any baddies with it.

We get the theory.

It's just a boring way to play.

Inactivity just really hurts the game. Yes it's not serious and just an online game, and of course sometimes life will get in the way of being able to keep up or get involved, but it's the equivalent of playing the parlour game it's based on and sitting at the table ignoring everyone. The fact that the villagers spend half the time arguing over whether someone is just bored and not playing or a wolf lying low is a real detriment to the game. I think OR's no PM rule might actually help the issue, as if the wolves can't message privately then an inactive wolf is basically not getting involved in the game at all which would be quite boring for them, and generally people are more interested in engaging when they have a special role.

What also helps is quotas. If someone is bothered enough to repeatedly meet a quota, regardless of content, they are clearly invested to a degree.

The MSN wolf chats were such a highlight of my schooldays. I am now 30. :slol:

I think a significant portion of my hotmail email contacts are still old Gamesradar forumites.
