Started on Towel Day 2012, hence this bit:

What?
Towel Day is an annual celebration on the 25th of May, as a tribute to the late author Douglas Adams (1952-2001). On that day, fans around the universe proudly carry a towel in his honour.

Obligatory Douglas Adams appreciation thread - Go!

Any hoopy froods doing anything to celebrate?

Douglas Adams wrote:One Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small cafe in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything.

Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it, a terrible stupid catastrophe occurred, and the idea was lost for ever.

This is not her story.

But it is the story of that terrible stupid catastrophe and some of its consequences.

Enjoy the first episode of the best visual adaptation of the series here:

It's far too hot to carry a towel today. :(

New location, same basic subject. Let's do this.

Picked up tickets for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show LIVE! the other day. Anyone else going?

This year you can experience the ultimate sci-fi comedy epic first hand, from the Heart Of Gold to the Restaurant At the End Of The Universe, performed live on stage by Simon Jones, Susan Sheridan, Geoff McGivern, Mark Wing-Davey and other original Hitchhiker's cast members under the direction of Dirk Maggs, Douglas Adams's choice to complete the saga in its original medium.

Apparently it's not just going to be five people sitting there talking, there's special effects and stuff. I'd love a proper stage adaptation of it, but I doubt that'll happen here. Still, Simon Jones

The first books quality but I though it went off fairly rapidly after that

How is that even possible?

The narrative of all pretty much every incarnation of Hitchhikers is mushed together in my brain until they're inseperable. Kind of like Red Dwarf, actually.

Just watched the movie version at the weekend with the kids. Does anyone know if the TV series is available on Netflix (either UK or US version).

Yes?

It seems to be on one of them, although I'm not sure which: Don’t Panic! Original “HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE” TV Show On Netflix

Also, the movie version is quite a poor adaptation, so if you thought the movie was bearable you should love the TV show :shifty:

I've only read the first book. I knew the jist of it as I'd seen bits and pieces of the film, I loved it regardless.

I think the first two books are about as good as each other, personally. They start going downhill a little after that though, although the next three are still decent. Whatshisname's "And Another Thing..." is an abomination that should be killed with fire.

Eh, it's about as good as you could hope for eight years after the death of Douglas Adams.

I must admit, it's one of the few books I've started and not finished. I thought it started fairly well, but just fell apart after that. I found it a real chore to read.
