I love those. And he clearly does a shitload of work to get multiple sources and is very careful to point out hes not a historian, he just has an interest and likes reading this stuff so hes eager to give credit to the right person.

There's a Will Durrant book in today's Daily Kindle deals for 99p. Thought I'd give it a go as he's one of Dan's go to sources.

After listening to one of the addendum podcasts, I have been listening to the History of Rome by Mike Duncan.

There are a LOT of episodes (it’s the entire history of Rome after all) but they are all quite short, 10-25 minutes. It took a while to get used to after Dan Carlin, but I’m loving it now, it’s full of information and stories that I had never heard.

I’m up to Hadrian now, I’ve got a feeling he might go all Trump and start building walls...

They are all self contained, pick a topic you are interested in and go with that.

Blueprint for Armageddon is the obvious starting point for Richard. And it's available for free so grab them whilst you can!

I finished Painfotainment and it didn't really grab me unfortunately. It was interesting sure, but I didn't really feel like I learnt anything. This is obviously my own personal opinion, and maybe because I used to read books about torture when I was younger, so I didn't feel shocked by it all perhaps, or surprised..

Or maybe because it was the first one i've listened to since blue print for Armageddon which was excellent.

Looking forward to listening to the Celtic holocaust one though.

Having visited Alesia in my childhood, seeing the statue of Vercingetorix that stands there now, the Celtic Holocaust cast was particularly wonderful to me.

I think the Rome ones have been my favourites, Punic Nightmares, Death Throes of the Republic and the Celtic Holocaust are all outstanding. The Roman empire just fascinates me, sometimes it seems so similar to today and sometimes it is just so alien.

I enjoyed the latest podcast, Painfotainment, I can't say I was too shocked by anything there but it was interesting and taught me a few things I didn't know. I was really interested by how public torture/executions never really lost popularity amongst the public, they only stopped because the powers that be wanted them stopped. I genuinely believe that if it was brought back, there would be outrage and protests, but that they would also be the most well attended entertainment in the world. Football crowds would look tiny compared to how many people the torture and execution of a child molester would bring out.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before and I've certainly only just found out about it but Dan has a new (well Oct 2017 new) Hardcore History podcast called Hardcore History Addendum. Shows are about an hour and there are 4 at the moment on iTunes. Not listened to any yet but thought people would like to know.

There's also a new Common Sense episode from Dan and he does mention that he's well on the way with a new HH episode.

Supernova in the East 1

The Asia-Pacific War of 1937-1945 has deep roots. It also involves a Japanese society that's been called one of the most distinctive on Earth. If there were a Japanese version of Captain America, this would be his origin story.

Out now 8-)

Hope there’s some discussion on Unit 731 in there - sounds like there will be.

I listened to it yesterday. It’s great but it feels weird to have Carlin tell a story in an hour.
