Has a game series ever gone through a golden age as good as the one Resident Evil is in?

Resident Evil 7 - 2017
Resident Evil 2 Remake - 2019
Resident Evil 3 Remake - 2020
Resident Evil 8 - 2021

Resident Evil 4 Remake - 2023

I was thinking about it this morning, the above list of games is one hell of a strike rate. Everyone will have their own preferences of course but aside from possibly RE3R you’d be hard pressed to argue those aren’t all great games. RE4R remains to be seen of course. You have classic game series that rarely miss like Mario, Zelda, Uncharted, FF etc. but they’ve all been spread over a much longer period. Uncharted with 4 games in 9 years is about as close as it gets.

Must be something the water over there at Capcom!

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate to Rise: Sunbreak is an insane run. Banger after banger.

Decent game, old game, old game, reasonable game, old game. Truly a golden era for Resident Evil.

Go back a bit and you get shorter development times and quicker release cycles, so modern series are going to be at a bit of a disadvantage.

Your run of Resident Evil games is over 7 years. A similar 7 year Zelda window gets: Ocarina of Time, Link's Awakening DX, Majora's Mask, Oracle of Seasons/Ages, A Link to the Past + Four Swords, The Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventures and The Minish Cap.

That's no slight on Capcom though - they made 3 of those Zelda games!

Another run that springs to mind is GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas over 4 years.

One of my favourite series, Jak and Daxter, has 5 great games in 6 years (TPL, 2, 3, X and Daxter).

3/5 of those RE games are old. It's not difficult to remaster an old game that was already good and produce a shinier version that is also good.

I've not played 7 or 8 but aren't they supposedly mid-tier additions to the franchise?

There's more impressive streaks out there, IMO.

To parrot a conversation from the Xenoblade Chronicles thread, they've all been either good, great or excellent.

Shoot out to Donkey Kong Country series. Impressive they managed to get 3 great platformers out so close to the end of the SNES's life and I think they released some GameBoy DK games around that time too :D

Early Pokemon era is full of great games, especially with the delayed/condensed EU release dates.

In just three years (1999-2001) in the UK we had:

Red and Blue
Stadium
Yellow
Snap
Pinball
Trading Card Game
Puzzle League
Gold and Silver
Stadium 2
Crystal

I think a few of these responses are over-simplifying what a great achievement RE2 Remake was.

Agreed, it seems odd to include re-releases in a period being termed a golden era.

These two series are probably worth a shout.

Burnout (2001)
Burnout 2 (2002)
Burnout 3 (2004)
Burnout Revenge (2005)

Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009)
Batman: Arkham City (2011)
Batman: Arkham Origins (2013)
Batman: Arkham Knight (2015)

I maintain that RE7 in VR is one of the greatest gaming experiences around.

Also, I haven't played RE3 Remake but the second is fantastic. I think it's a bit dismissive to say it's easy to remake an older game, it's not like it's a simple HD remaster of a PS3 game.

With a XCX Switch port in 2024 after the story expansion has come out for XC3 late next year.

Xenoblade really was what I thought of too, even including XCX from 2015, we’ve had a consistently good to great series over a relatively short span of 7 years, granted one of those is a remake but still.

Final Fantasy.

VI-XII are all stone cold classics.

I quite liked XIII but it wasn’t very popular.

XIV is the best online RPG since PSO on the Dreamcast. It’s utterly brilliant.

When they actually got around to publishing all the DLC, 2-hour intro and the hardback prologue XV is now one of the greatest JRPGs ever made.

I haven't really got on with Resident Evil's output for a long time so I think I could come up with plenty of series that have been equal to or better than it in terms of recent output!

I want more Arkham! I would be genuinely happy with a new Arkham game every 3 years, even if it was broadly similar.

How about Super Mario Bros? 1,3, and World in the space of about 5 years is some going!

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:
