Has Anyone Ever Actually Managed to Clear Their Backlog

It’s quite nice to have a bit of a backlog - thanks to GwG and the game pass I have a massive list of decent looking games I can go in and play whenever I feel like it, and I rarely feel the need to pay for an actual game. I can think of three this year I’ll buy, to go with the three that I bought last year.

With lack of games I genuinely want at the moment, I am starting to clear down my backlog pretty nicely. Until Resi 3 and Final Fantasy VII remake come out

If I remove all the games I've started but didnt enjoy enough to want to finish, and disregard all the games I got for free, in subs or in bundles that weren't the games I actively wanted, then I have about 15 or so games in backlog.

Due to how life is, anf how these include some older JRPGs, that feels quite insurmountable.

I've cut back the amount of games I play these days, so It's not as big of an issue for me anymore. Only put time into games I really want to play or in the mood for. That said... I've had my copy of Spiderman since it's launch and haven't touched it once """>,>

Pretty much yeah, I don't buy games until I know I'll have time to play them and I either enjoy it and finish it or device it's not for me and move on to something else. Things like Game Pass do make it easy to get in the habit of playing 30 minutes of loads of games and not sticking with anything but alternatively it's a weird thing in gaming that people think they have to finish everything regardless of enjoyment.

Fewer and fewer games are grabbing me nowadays, if I'm just not getting on with something I'll drop it with little thought, to the point I've even stopped claiming all the freebies on twitch prime and the epic store unless it looks really good as j just don't need them.

Also I I managed to cull my steam hidden folder from over 600 to about 250, straight-up deleted from my account. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

It's taken an active effort, but I think I've slowly managed to erode the guilt of having a backlog, though I can't deny it still lingers. Not getting round to every multihour game ever is valid and fair enough!

I guess trying to make it more of a carrot to lure in vs stick to hit oneself with may be the better ideal, tried to use that to finally get round to some bucketlist games like Mother 3

As someone who has had a breakdown before and been able to work or want to leave the house I think a backlogs a good thing, I wouldn't want to clear it, it's my entertainment contingency plan for darker days

I've bought the same game twice because I didn't realise I owned it. The backlog will never clear.

Even buying fewer games, PS+ makes backlog clearance impossible. I kind of reset when I went from PS3 to PS4 and no doubt that'll happen again with PS5.

I’ve got mine down to single digits, I think, which is good because I’d like to get to the point where I can play a game because I actively want to, as opposed to feeling a little bit like I HAVE to.

There are about a dozen games in my backlog awaiting purchase for whenever I'm ready. Am saving a few (Spiderman, Horizon Zero Dawn, Control, Detroit: Become Human) for next-gen and have pretty much set aside the rest of this year for the Yakuza series.

I think one of the main culprits for amassing such a large backlog, especially for this gen at least, have been live service games like Fortnite and Apex Legends.

I think I've actually been doing quite well with my backlog recently.

Ignoring freebies, Game Pass, PS+ etc. I think I only bought about 3 or 4 games for the whole of last year and in that time completed a good 10+ games.

Lately I have not been doing well with this. I'm buying more than I'm completing.

I don't think there's any games I'm immediately interested in beyond Xenoblade and the W101 remaster. So I should hopefully get stuck into clear the massive backlog I have.

I don't do the whole backlog thing. If I've not played the game within a year of purchasing it goes in the bin. Same is true for any game, if it was not played within a year it gets uninstalled

I've just got down to 9 games and though the games I have got left are probably going to take awhile (around 360 hours) the list is starting to look less of a burden.

The thing is, I frequently hear people say they like buying loads of games they don't play as they like having them "there" on the off chance they do want to play them. I do think that this has become less and less necessary due to digital stores and frequently low prices. Some games are almost eternally rotating through a sale.

For example, I picked up FFXV due to a pricing error in 2017, for a tenner. I still haven't played it and clearly never felt like playing it that much. It's been a tenner for quite a while now though, so had that feeling got too much I could have just gone and bought it.

It's a little different with the old generations - I have a large GC collection in the UK and maybe six or eight games unplayed or not started. I largely picked them up because they were there.

A lot of it isn't forcing myself to play games or to play to completion (it's just sort of a natural byproduct that I've been completing them). For some it's just a case of getting my.moeny's worth, but at the very least I want to actually spend money on something and experience it, as it just seems a waste to leave it unplayed forever. There are much better uses for even a small amount of money and it doesn't really give me any pleasure just sitting as a purchase on my PSN account.

Which is why for most of us we're probably better off prioritising time. That's one of the things I really like about having a subscription service is that I can try something different from my usual tastes without having to commit to a purchase.

I stopped thinking of it as a backlog quite some time ago. I wait for most things to reach dirt cheap prices, so I don't feel bad about things sitting on a shelf for years unplayed, and even the idea of never getting around to it at all. I know I'll always have something interesting to pick up. I don't really want to get caught up and have to pay £40 for a new game because I have nothing else to play.
