Have you ever been to the theatre?

I was going to go see the Back to the Future musical at Sheffield a while back. I can't remember why I didn't. It may be around the time of the pandemic. There have been other things I'd like to see that were cancelled (Taiko drumming springs to mind). And my friends (at the time) went to see Shaolin monks martial arts display without me. Despite me being the one that suggested it!

Honestly I can understand where your friends were coming from every trip I've ever taken has been plagued with that "god I hope the audience aren't dickheads" anxiety. Like, you're paying all that money to listen to the *cast*. Only sing if you're prompted to It's the main reason I avoid jukebox musicals. Seeing the tour of Dirty Dancing was about my limit.

You need really burly front of house staff to just be like "OI SHUT THE strawberry float UP OR GET OUT" because what can the little theatre kids actually do in that situation.

I've been to the theatre a few times over the years; generally smaller-scale productions and I haven't watched a show for around five or so years now. Needless to say, I can't remember much about the shows that I have seen but I always enjoy the spectacle and the atmosphere.

I will say that the audience on this occasion behaved immaculately, also, kids under the age of 4 aren't even allowed in the building because of just how disruptive they can be.

I did, and she was incredible.

Anna was played by a different actress this time, but she too was amazing in the role.

Lion King may well have to go on my to do list at some point, the fact that it's just down the road from Covent Garden too helps as i've passed by there loads of times.

I also get the 'that was the best thing ever' feeling when I go to the theatre. I've been to quite a few productions in London and Birmingham. Have got Book of Mormon and Hamilton coming up this year.

Would love to go more often, but it ain't half pricey. More difficult now as well with needing childcare.

Jealous. She's got a fantastic voice Saw her do the Last Five Years in London, but that's much less of a spectacle than Frozen.

Also, The Woman in Black is touring at the moment, so if you're lucky you might be able to have a daytrip out to see it. Definitely worth a watch if you get chance. It's nothing like the Daniel Radcliffe film version

been a few times, got to go see the Agatha Christie plays Mousetrap and Death On The Nile, both of which are great. Also seen Dont Look Now, and i think the last one i saw was Some Mothers Do Ave Them. oh just remembered i saw Joseph And His Technicolour Dreamcoat as well.

Would very much like to go to the RSC again soon and see another one of Shakespeare's plays. Hamlet starring Paapa Essiedu was one of my favourites. Got quite a few productions on blu ray, including that one.

Been to a few shows, going this weekend actually to see The Book of Mormon which I am excited for

Seen shows like We Will Rock You, Wicked, Woman in Black, The Exorcist, Young Frankenstein, Toxic Avenger (This was proper B movie theatre and it was great just like the film )

I enjoyed Book of Mormon.

Young Frankenstein must have been great! I saw Little Shop of Horrors and it was loads of fun.

Which also reminds me I saw Benedict Cumberbatch as Hamlet at the Barbican!

If you can, the £5 standing tickets at the globe in summer is awesome.

I had a few reservations about how well Totoro would be adapted for a stage show, but I was blown away.

The cast was brilliant, the score was beautiful (Joe Hisaishi, no duh), and Henson's Creature Shop smashed it out of the park with the puppet designs.

Not to mention the puppeteers, who injected so much life and personality into their puppets that the puppeteers themselves managed to completely melt away into the background despite being stood immediately behind them on stage, as clear as day. Absolute masters of their craft.

I saw it last year and a strong recommend from me! Probably my favourite one I've been to. Such a faithful recreation and Totoro is just an awe to behold, and all the puppeteering is scene-stealing. Catbus! I just remembered Catbus!

I saw Frozen a few weeks back (as I think the AYAW? crew know about) so I can vouch that they do enough interesting things with Olaf and the Reindeer to keep the neutral interested. The best for puppeteering is Lion King and Totoro though (seen both).

The Book of Mormon is great, and I took the other half to see Harry Potter 1 and 2 years ago, which had some good dementors in it (she's the HP fan).

Yeah, 15 years ago you couldn't get me into a theatre or near a musical, but with CGI up to the eyeballs these days, it's good to go and watch something real and see how they pull it all together.

I went quite a bit when I was a kid then not at all for years. More recently I’ve been a few more times with my family, seen Circus of Horrors a few times which is always a great time, seen Spamalot, Little Shop of Horrors and Book of Mormon too. I really ought to get round to seeing Rocky Horror live at some point as I bloody love the film.

My partner enjoys it - been a few times, but I'm not really into it.

Like, I enjoy big spectacle stuff like Lion King and I saw Spiderman on Broadway (so suspect I would quite enjoy frozen).

It's more the drama-plays I can't get into. For example, as it's mentioned in this thread, I didn't enjoy woman in black (went to the one in Covent Garden near the Lion King theatre). I enjoy Tarantino films and my favourite show ever is Better Call Saul and films and show that have long dialogue heavy scenes with interesting characters I hang on every word (Hateful Eight and Reservoir Dogs particularly feels like they could be plays). But I can't really connect with how stories are conveyed through theatre, I can't relate with theatre acting. The script can be good - but the nature of theatre it's needs to be projected in that shouty way that nobody in real life speaks like. Theatre you lose any subtly, film most of the acting isn't in the words, it's in agonised little expressions etc, there are things that my brain can fill in the gaps for - but I find theatre is the least immersive way of telling a serious story.

I had never been until a few years ago when my Dad and Step Mum started taking us all as a family and now I've seen about 4 shows.

I highly recommend the comedy series called "Goes Wrong"

They have had 5 different shows, I think they're still doing 3 which are Peter Pan Goes Wrong, The Play that Goes Wrong, Mind Mengeler. The other two were the Magic Show Goes Wrong and the Bank Robbery that Goes Wrong. I've seen 4 of them with Peter Pan being the latest I saw just a month ago. If you like slapstick comedy it's absolutely hilarious. The premise is essentially they're trying to do a serious play but everything keeps going wrong in hilarious ways.

They also had a show on the BBC if you want to check out their style of comedy. There's about 3 full teams of them doing it now too so they're even on Broadway.
