Once the paramedics arrived my vision was really poor only seeing about 1 meter in front of me which they found out quickly I had internal bleeding. Back to A&E for a scan then shipped off to another hospital for an emergency operation. A few days in ICU then a few more days in high dependency.
The doctors reckon I lost around 6 pints of blood and had to cut away about 25% of my liver which took around 2 years to grow back also a nice big scar across my stomach. But I did get to go in three ambulances in one day.

I still race mountain bike and ride BMX I haven't learnt.

Sounds like we're liver twins.

The scars are the best bit 8-)

Yep :datass:

I still have a stitch inside of me (hospital forgot to take it out) that you can see at the top of my belly/bottom of my chest. I used to love freaking people out by getting them to touch it (no context).

I walked along a electrified railway in the pitch black for about two and a half miles when I was 20, while carrying heavy bags and a guitar case, and so could very easily have never returned from that, so probably, yes.

Age 16 I blacked out while locked into in a portable toilet cubicle at my dad's second wedding. Were I not standing up or slumped over the toilet basin, I probably would have chocked on my vomit. And apparently nobody was wondering where I was either (least of all my own dad or step mother), as I woke up several hours later, after the sun had risen, covered in my own puke, and let myself out.

So I've done a few stupid things when I wasn't getting the help I needed, which generally manifests as a reckless disregard for my own safety.

Had a minor one tonight actually. I was teaching a socially distanced Ju-Jitsu lesson (one of the last ones before we lock down again) and there's a strangle escape that we like to teach by harking back to the samurai - you end up with your left foot back and your right hand resting on your left hip, which is where your sword would be if you were a samurai, so we use that to help people remember where to put their hands for the back fist we want them to do. I'm obviously stuck metres away from the kids so I can't just go and show them what to do, but one of the other coaches was doing some kata work on another mat with his katana. I ask him to demonstrate what someone with a sword would do if they were strangled. He did so, breaking an invisible attacker's strangle then drawing his sword across said invisible man's throat.

At the end of this cut his wrist gave out and he threw a strawberry floating spinning katana at me like he was in KOTOR :dread: If his angle of release was different I could have been strawberry floated. After we'd styled it out and finished teaching that move I asked him "Dude how sharp is your sword?"

"Yeah it's pretty sharp today mate..."

I was taking part in a speedway track day about 15 years ago. I was bombing it round and some idiot and left a ramp thing out. I could see the people going ‘Oh my god, if that guy hits that ramp going at that speed he is definitely dead’ I hit the ramp, i took off in the air. I turned over in the air and they were going ‘well he is definitely dead now.’ I landed on my wheels, pulled over and said ‘What were you worried about?’

real talk, when I was born I came out feet first with the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck and I was blue. Apparently I was close to being stillborn :dread:

I lost a lot of blood when I was a kid on the way to the hospital.

There was also the time one of my teachers asked me to read in front of the class.

As a baby in my cot I was choking while my parents were downstairs, only for the pet dog going absolute batshit trying to get up the stairs I’d have popped it then. During my 13th birthday the family went to Kusadasi in Turkey, during landing at Manchester on the way back a plane was taking off as ours was about to hit the runway, never forget the sudden steep speedy as strawberry float climb the plane did to escape a crash.

Around the age of 18/19 I was living in Dyserth and working in Fflint so a friend of my dads son got a job with me too and would pick me up every morning in his boy racer Nova and we’d both go to work, moved back to Liverpool with a new job, a week later his car was destroyed by a coach on the way to work killing him outright.

I think Death needs to try a little bit harder in getting me :capnscotty:

My first reaction was no because when you think of a “near death experience” you think of like in films where you see your whole life flash by or a tunnel etc

But I did nearly die, when I was 15 in the year 2000 I got hit by a car on the way home from school, apparently I was close to not making because of the amount of blood I lost (I cut my head right across when I smashed the windscreen, I broke my leg, arm and collar bone) I was saved by a lady that used her jacket to try and stop the bleeding from my head, she got other peoples jackets to put on top of me to keep me warm (it was February) and kept talking to me to keep me awake

I still can remember to this day the whole thing so clearly, my friend crossed the road and a few seconds later I followed, I looked one way but I didn’t look the other way, I had my eyes open the whole time and it was like in slow motion looking at the street go around and around like I was in the air, I remember feeling like I didn’t know what was happening everything was silent and then I hit the ground and it was like a burst of sound all at once, I then realised I had been hit, strangely my reaction was to do nothing, I didn’t try to move, I felt strange but I didn’t feel any pain at all, I felt calm and just wanted to sleep, it felt like I was there on my own for a while when I reality it would have been seconds until people came and helped

At no point did I feel like I could or would die, at no point through the whole thing or the nearly a year of recovery did I feel any pain at all, the first thing they did when I arrived at hospital was to stitch my head and they gave me gas and it made me feel drunk and I was chatting away quite happily to my father while it was being done, I had X-rays obviously and my left leg was completely smashed, my arm broken in a few places and my collar bone broken along with some broken toes and few cuts on my hands,

My head is heeled ok and depending how short I have my fridge you can see the scar, my collar bone joined itself back but is slightly raised, my arm is completely normal with nothing noticeable, my leg was the worst part, they tried various things that didn’t work and I was told it may be the case that I may never walk again, they got some sort of machine from a hospital in Sheffield and fitted a external fixator that I had for quite a while, the scariest part was after months of being in a wheelchair and now having metal screws drilled into my bones being told that I could try and walk on it, I had visions of as soon as I put weight on it that it would move and cause more damage or I would fall on it or something, anyway eventually I started to walk again and even started work with it, I didn’t return to school at all and did all my GCSEs at home in my bed

Anyway I will stop going on and on now.

I was helping my cousin deliver papers one day. I took half on my bike in my hands, he took half on foot in the bag.

I had 3 left, two streets over. To get there, I had to go down a big hill and turn left on to a cycle path by the area’s main road (40mph). I normally fly down the hill at some pace, because the turn’s fairly sharp and it’s pretty rad getting a good deep lean in to take it at high speed.

But I’d usually have both hands on the handlebars instead of holding newspapers in one.

So I take the corner, make it around, the front wheel wobbles as I pull out of the turn, and I try to correct it with one hand. I end up jerking the wheel around perpendicular to the frame and I’m thrown over the
front. I hadn’t rounded the corner fully so the bike is pointing towards the road as it launches me, and I land, hard, back of the head first (no helmet, obvs), right in the middle of the near lane. It was a bit of fortuitous timing that meant there just didn’t happen to be anything coming along at the time, but a lorry, van or even a car and I’d be dead as strawberry float.

I had a tire blow out when I was on the motorway. The car suddenly started handling oddly and there was a weird noise. I pulled into the hard shoulder and the tire was completely deflated.

It wasn't scary but could have been deadly if the car had gone out of control.

Several when I was travelling in South America. The worst was travelling up to a tiiiiny little village in Bolivia: the sensible option was to get a flight. £40, 1 hour, boom done. Foolishly though, me and one of our group decided to get the bus: 40p, 33 hours along Death Road (yes, that Death Road).

I had a bunch of diazepam I'd bought, so I popped one of those and zonked out for 20 hours, but after that it was 13 hours of fear and stress. Due to heavy rainfall the road was jam-packed with traffic: buses, cars, motos etc and the road is very much one way only. However, it wasn't one way in practice, and we ran into a bus coming the opposite way around a hairpin bend. Cue an hour of 40 vehicles reversing one inch at a time to let this thing through.

At one point the whole bus erupted in screams as it began to list towards the edge of the road and the 200 foot drop beyond. We were on the opposite side and pretty much everyone rushed over to our side, cramming themselves, and us, against the windows. Genuinely thought we were going over.

Obviously we didn't, and 12 hours later we made it to the village.

The way back took an additional 10 hours as part of the road had collapsed. Later on, I met someone who'd done the same route and saw a bus go over. 24 people died.

I wasn't the smartest traveller, but I did save £80.

EDIT: For anyone interested, it was the La Paz to Rurrenabaque road. Video of some of the road here (not mine)

Yeah not watching that. strawberry floating hell Taf.

My near death experience was the time an air stewardess left the strawberry floating plane door open(well, ajar) on take-off when I went on a family holiday to Spain in 2004 or 2005. The cabin slowly depressurised and the plane had to land back at Glasgow airport. I've never been so frightened. Didn't help that the plane's safety measures were all in German, so the safety masks all popped down while the tannoy screamed ACHTUNG! ACHTUNG! DIE MASKEN! at the top of it's strawberry floating voice.

Kinda, I was running late for work one morning and while I was on the way to the train station a car crashed into a wall then span out into the road a few feet in front of me. If I'd left the house a minute or two earlier I have no doubt that he would have hit me and considering the speed he was doing and the damage to the wall I'd likely have died.

Tell me about it, they didn't even use the proper machine for carving me up. Slap dash is what I call it, using a lawnmower instead of a meat slicer.

I was on the Train platform at Kings Cross on the Picadilly Line and couldn't get on the train as it was so crowded. The train pulled away and about a minute later exploded at Russel Square.

Felt the blast but didnt hear anything as had headphones in. Was very scary/surreal.

I wasn't quick enough changing the channel one time and Hollyoaks got past the opening credits

If it's any consolation, "impaled by a katana" would have been a hell of a way to go

One of the directors at my old place was supposed to be on a flight, missed it due to a meeting overunning and it crashed, killing everyone. I forget which one it was, but it was a well known crash, might have even been something like the September 11th flights as it was a US one.

Yeah, my girlfriend at the time was on the train behind the one that blew up. We had a good old think about life that afternoon.

I've thankfully never experienced anything like this, but I did nearly get run over by a car once. If I hadn't have dived out of the road that guy would've hit me at speed. He pulled out into the wrong side of the road to try and speed past the bus that was stopped infront of him. He could've crashed into another car coming the other way as well given when he pulled out (which was after I was already crossing) he couldn't have seen jack gooseberry fool.
