Long story short I want to get a hairless sphynx cat, but live in rented accommodation, and as we know 90% of these places say no pets.
Now we have a tortoise and they are fine with that (he lives in a vivarium though) but I was just wondering if anybody has asked their landlord in the past about owning a cat and if they did how did they react?
We have a cat but landlord doesn’t know. He’s got our deposit and it’s all our furniture. If he wants to deduct for damages when we leave that’s fine. Don’t feel great about it, but it’s imposdible to find rentals that allow animals.
Don’t strawberry floating see why though. Never seen an advert that says no kids and they’re probably worse for potential messes.
We asked our landlord to get a cat and he was fine with it. However he's generally been a good landlord all-round, and I'm certain most of the previous landlords I've been with wouldn't have been so accomodating.
Our landlord is fine with our cat, but then again we e-mailed our landlord with some questions about repairs a few months after we moved in and he replied with "who is this" so he probably doesn't know what's going on anyway.

Not the landlord but a previous letting agent was putting my flat back on the market after I didn't renew my tenancy. They phoned me up to ask me whether the water bill was included in the rent or not.
We got a new housemate who brought two cats with her. Rather than ask the landlord, we just took out air vent cover in the living room and replaced it with a cat flap. When moving out we put the air vent back.
Although, I think if you actually ask the landlord they're not allowed to say no without good reason.
Well I'm assuming it says no pets without permission from the landlord, because we had to get permission for the tortoise. But I'll have to take a closer look.
My girlfriend wants to hide the cat but I think it would really stress me out worrying about having it found out and being potentially evicted.
Check your tenancy agreement. If it says you cannot have pets, and you get a pet, then it's grounds to serve notice through breach of tenancy conditions (though your LL/ agent would still need to follow formal legal procedure of serving notice, then applying to court following expiration of notice, obtaining an eviction warrant, then only actually evicting you on the date specified by the warrant)
If it doesn't say anything about it and you get a cat and they begin the proceedings (which technically can happen at any time for no reason in a private rent) you can contest this but it can be stressful and may not be successful.
Best case scenario is always to ask and get approval but, obviously, it runs the risk of you asking and being told no. If they say no even though it doesn't say no pets in your agreement you can technically still get a pet (unless they subsequently send you a revised tenancy and ask you to sign it...) but I'd imagine it would be likely they'd serve a "no fault" notice (ie no breach they just want the property back) if they were to find out you reneged on an informal agreement.
If you've built up goodwill with the landlord it may be worth asking especially if you frame it positively (ie hairless well behaved cat facing the pound if you can't home it). If it's a letting agent or they have a website submit an enquiry as an anonymous client and make it seem like you're asking as a prospective client (but don't say exactly as much!) If they say no pets then at least you know what you're contending with and it's up to you if you want to pretend that wasn't you and get a cat anyway; if they say sure you can have a cat (possibly more likely if they think you're enquiring about a vacancy and they want you to sign up) then you can reply with your current vacancy details and happily become a cat owner.
On all the properties I rent out and have rented out I always use a pretty standard tenancy agreement that states “no pets” but I have allowed people to keep pets in the past and it was not a problem, I would however be annoyed if they did without asking first
Some landlords are mental, I once viewed a place available because the landlord was currently evicting them because they kept a Guinea pig in a hutch outside. Ask them.
I have three lizards even though it just says "lizard" on our contract. It was 5. We had to pay some bullshit fee. Same as last time but we actually had about 12.
The reason cats and dogs often aren't allowed is because it limits the retenanting for people who are allergic, so the house has the be fumigated, although from what I've seen, it usually isn't (there's dog hair in our floorboards).
But if we're getting a hairless cat how would hair allergies be relevant?
We're going to get it either way so my girlfriend reckons it would be better to get it and not ask, then ask, risk him saying no and then do it anyway.
Especially since we already have a pet, and the flat we are moving into was on the market for a long time, so much so that we managed to haggle the rent down. So even if he does find out I figure that he'd rather just sort something out with us rather than try and find new tennants.
I would obviously rather ask but my girlfriend is set on getting a cat and she went through a rough breakup where her ex took her cat, so I can understand what this means to her.
