Craig Mazin, the creator of the acclaimed limited series Chernobyl, is reteaming with HBO adapt The Last of Us, the massive Sony PlayStation video game franchise.

In a rare development in the world of video game adaptations, the writer and creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann, is also involved, and will work with Mazin to pen and executive produce what is intended to be a series.

Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce along with Evan Wells, the president of Naughty Dog, the Santa Monica-based developer of the game. The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and in association with PlayStation Productions and it will be the first television series from PlayStation Productions.

Think this could be well suited to a HBO 8-10 episode series.

Here’s hoping the fart sniffing at ND won’t become too intolerable.

The Last of Us HBO TV series will replace the proposed movie adaptation, according to a source familiar with Sony’s plans for the popular Naughty Dog video game.

IGN has learned from sources at Sony Pictures that the newly announced HBO TV adaptation of The Last of Us will replace the film adaptation that Sony previously announced back in 2014. At the time, Sony announced that Neil Druckmann would write and produce the film adaptation under Sony’s Screen Gems’ movie label. Sam Raimi was also attached to produce the film.

Sounds great, hopefully this & Halo along with Witcher will be great.

Chernobyl was the best TV in years and The Last of Us is the Citizen Kane of gaming so this should be average.

If we’re using the game to film analogy, The Last of Us is not the Citizen Kane of gaming.

I hope they have an episode about people rushing and blatantly hacking in the multiplayer :shifty: .

Maybe have a scene where someone throws about 50 bombs in half a second :fp: .

If I were to compare it to a film I'd pick Eye in the Sky or Lion which I admit most haven't seen.

Both are great film's that I enjoyed immensely but I know they have faults and aren't the best films ever.

I look forward to the episode about moving ladders and turning on generators.

Yea, the Citizen Kane of Gaming would be like Half Life or something. Completely revolutionary at the time, and fundamentally shaped literally everything that came after it, but if just shown to a modern audience with no context would be pretty unremarkable because everything in it has been adapted, refined and improved in other media since.

And the episode where they realise that Ellie is apparently completely undetectable to enemies, thereby rendering Joel completely moot.

It’ll be great for the first few episodes but then budget constraints will mean they end up trapped on a farm for what feels like forever.

That's how they're securing the funding in the first place, it's part of the wider universe crossover event with Farming Simulator 2020

It'll be interesting to see how they manage that Walking Dead problem of endless wandering in forests. I'm not sure what that comic is like but TLoU is primarily set I'm towns and cities which are a bit harder to make seem abandoned for 20 years than an old set of train tracks in the wilderness.

I know this won't happen but maybe they could use some of the abandoned sections of Detroit where there are loads of places where nature has reclaimed part of the town. There's both residential and industrial areas. I'm unsure if they could get permission to do prolonged filming though and how varied they could make the area look but that's about the only way I can see them being able to do a post apocalypse style setting in a town or city.

Yeah, ok but I'm a bit fed-up with CGI for realistic settings.
I think having actual location shoots in places that are rundown is much better and it's not like there aren't places available and that could use a bit of a cash injection.
