Fair play to everyone that helped raise money.

Another case of separating the art from the artist.

I guess, but it’s still there in the back of your mind.

I’d never heard of this guy before, but he seems like such a lovely person. My limited experience of streamers has been mostly the shouty kind, so this was refreshing.

Yes I'm okay with her acting like a young person right about now.

This is all glorious. HBomberGuy is torturing himself by playing that terrible hodgepodge of a platformer for charity and Graham Linehan is exploding with septic rage. 2019's started off okay.

Going to chuck £20 towards trans kids now.

Somehow missed this event over the weekend. Lovely stuff to see how this played out! :toot:

What the actual strawberry float is wrong with Linehan though? Why did he even start targeting this charity in the first place? I've not paid much attention to him beyond enjoying stuff he wrote 10+ years ago, has he always been a massive twat then?

He's gone Nuclear Massive Twat in the interim.

People point back to the trans-centric episode of The IT Crowd as evidence that it's always been there, but I'm not sure about that: Douglas is a massive transphobe, but Douglas is just generally awful. And like Deadpool, I'm never sure whether depicting a fight between a man and a woman is sexist, or completely the opposite of that. It's not ideal, but it's not current Linehan levels of twatness.

He's a transphobe. His viewpoint is that trans women are mentally disturbed men attempting to invade women only spaces. When women, trans or not, tell him he's being a banana split, he either insults or ignores them.

During the stream he also seemingly decided it is he who gets to decide who is a 'good' feminist or not.

This has been going on for years now. But, and I was thinking about this this morning, I can't recall a single member of the UK comedy circuit commenting on it or calling him out. Except Robert Webb, who appeared to side with him, amazingly

I get the impression that Lineham sees himself as a feminist and thinks he is just sticking up for women. I can imagine he started out from a reasonably good place before falling deeper and deeper into a very nasty transphobic rabbit hole.

Twat.

It's come on over the last few years. People reflected on the trans episode of the I.T. Crowd. He got incredibly defensive about it ("its got a trans phobic character...it's not a trans phobic episode" except it is because most of the jokes revolve around trans punchlines).

He's struggling because he presents himself (believes?) he's ultra progressive (I believe he's said "wokest of woke") and when confronted with evidence/arguments that he might have a problem (even inadvertent) with a certain area...he's reacted. Strongly and angrily.

He's bunkered down and gone to town. He's persecution complex has crystalises and he's attacking "the other side" constantly. He acts like his white knighting women (he's a noble progressive after all remember) by attacking trans people. He regularly calls people criticising his stance on trans people "misogynistic". So he gets called a TERF. And the situation escalates/continues.

Basically he's a snowflake that didn't handle criticism/learning oppertunities well and snowballed.

I can't recall any specific incident that got Mermaids on his radar. He just got upset that the lottery was paying to a chariry who wants to erase women or something.

Now that the stream is over, Linehan may be the devil incarnate, but I am not, so please don't bite my head off.

From what I can gather, his contention has been -

1. Drugs given to trans kids are untested and could have unforeseen consequences, either mental, physical or both

2. Some women feel that trans women are not welcome in female-only spaces

Have I missed anything? Is he wrong on either of those points?

Edit - didn't see Hexx's post... but still, is he wrong on those two points?

1. I don’t know enough about the drugs to comment. From what I gather though Mermaids don’t hand out drugs to anybody, they are a charity that offer support to trans children and the families of trans children.

2. So what? A transwoman is a woman, if people are not comfortable with that then that’s their problem.

Well...let's look at that.

1. I remember reading it was untrue at the time (Mermaid is about a support service for families, not helping people transition). But let's review. His argument is that some charity is somehow giving untested and untried drugs to kids with unknowable and unforeseen consequence. In the UK. Untried and Untested. Despite all the regulation and criteria. Doesn't sound like it would be accurate would it?

(And if I recall correctly his actual insinuation was much much more predatory. Like "They taken confused kids, give them drugs that will make them trans")

2. Yeah. That's the whole TERF and Radical Feminist vs Intersectional Feminist debate which is a whole other kettle of fish.
There's (potentially) a debate to be had there - but Lineham is demonstratably not equiped to be involved with it

Well, should that be your decision, as a man?

Jesus Christ Linehan you pleb. Such a weird chip on his shoulder, more so considering he's generally liberal in his other views.

Gender Dysphoria is a genuine problem and charities such as mermaids prevent suicide numbers among these people.

I'm gonna have to seperate the art from the artist, especially with father ted, as he co-wrote it and Dermot Morgan's legacy shouldn't be tarnished by this banana split.

"Untested" is a misleading word to use, no drugs are used on people without substantial tests and trials. The difficulty with assessing long-term health effects is, obviously, how long it takes to gather that data - if a new drug is developed today then it can take 20 years to start to really properly assess its effectiveness for a child growing up.

I don't know any details more than that, and I don't know the history of the drugs in contention, but I imagine the nuances of drug development - and the timescales involved - are lost on any "popular" campaigns (as Linehan spearheaded on mumsnet). It certainly happens a lot the other way round when you see people wanting to raise money to pay for treatments that haven't yet been approved by the NHS for example.

Which one?

I assume you mean 2? It’s not me making the decision, I’m giving an opinion. And my opinion is that discrimination is wrong.

I can't find any info on the drugs Linehan was going on about, but the whole thing seems to have kicked off after a Times article was published criticising the Lottery donation to Mermaids.

Here's a response to said article published in the Indepedent

https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/me ... 88701.html

Cherry picking ahoy:

In the Times, Mermaids was termed as a “child sex-change charity”, and said to be “aggressive”. Elsewhere, writer Graham Linehan encouraged people to express their opposition to the decision on the grounds that the charity pushes an “extreme ideological agenda” and adopts an approach to trans and gender non-conforming children which is “experimental” and “non-evidence-based”.

None of these claims are grounded in fact. Mermaids primarily exists to support the families of trans and gender non-conforming children, not to coordinate their transition. It has no agenda, “extreme” or otherwise, beyond improving the lives of trans people and their relatives. Its approach to gender non-conformity in children is far from lacking in evidence, and is in reality informed by a wealth of guidance from the international medical community.

Speaking as a man who has actually had a 2-year sexual relationship with a trans (male-to-female), I would just like to mention that, so far, in this thread the only commenter who has come even close to addressing some of the complexities of this issue is mic. All the rest has just been outright bile and blinkered, uninformed hatred directed at Graham Lineham, because reasons.

Jesus, this place can be toxic at times.
