Had the same problem. I was looking for a TV back in December and couldn't find any that didn't have some problem. Sony's have blooming issues, Samsung's have crushed blacks, HiSense have motion issues, and then with OLED itself is just a matter of time until you get burn in.

In the end I decided to wait.

Or you could have picked up a set on the cheap in a sale/promo which would offset some the downsides (yup, plural) of your purchase. Otherwise, you're waiting on something that's never going to come. (A set without drawbacks.)

I was kinda put off for years from getting a new TV. There are so many reviews and opinions on kit now that it can easily make you shy off from getting one.

The thing to remember is that most of these reviewers are actively looking for faults and issues; and they see so many different sets that they are in a great position to compare and contrast. In a "more normal" environment - i.e. the living room of your average Joe who is buying one new screen every seven years or so - these "issues" just won't be noticed.

I'm not putting down the excellent analysis that many reviewers undertake, but it's worth bearing in mind that, in most cases, any issues raised will be pretty minor to most folk. Looking at a range of reviews and then getting an image of "good", "okay" or "bad" in your mind will usually be enough.

Edit: Of course, it's a different situation if you're looking to utilise the latest, up-to-the-minute tech. In that position you'll be paying a premium and, quite often, the tech and pricing will change quickly.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new TV (most likely a CX 55 - I want to futureproof it for PS5/XBX) but the risk of burn in does make me a little apprehensive since a lot of what I watch is streamed TV with subtitles. :shifty: I watched the video SoK posted on the last page but tbh I'd just turn them off if the risk is genuinely that bad.

My main problem I guess is that I won't be in a position to buy until the end of March (bonus comes through at work in the March pay) - so by that time it's either wait until the 2021 range drops or risk missing out on stock of the old line or risk overpaying before even deeper discounting comes in to shift them. It's an absolute nightmare.

Regarding burn in I found this on a digital foundry article someone linked to a while ago:

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digi ... aming-7009

OLED: This high-end display tech uses organic light-emitting diodes which produce what is arguably the best picture. Contrast is a strong suit, as individual pixels can be turned off completely to create a true black, rather than the very dark grey that other monitor types can produce. Viewing angles are also impressive, ensuring the picture from a 45-degree angle looks as good as the screen viewed dead-on. HDR is also well catered for, thanks to the ability to see extremely light and dark areas side-by-side. However, OLED can be expensive, its brightness can't compete with traditional LCDs and motion handling can be poor on some models. Image retention or burn-in is also a concern, although real-life OLED burn-in tests that have been running non-stop for several years show that image retention is unlikely to occur through normal use, even when gaming.

Which links to this:

https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/real-li ... rn-in-test

They're running 6 screens around the clock (when on), with different content on each, and their test has been running since 2018 with a few gaps (they moved office, for example).

They used run a uniformity test every two weeks (slower now, and seems to have stopped due to pandemic. probably not in office). The latest images are from week 102 of usage.

Image

(Looks like the quality of this gif isn't great, go to the site for original version)

Keeping in mind these are on 24 hours a day, if you use your TV on average 6 hours a day this is 8 years of usage.

To me the main ones to consider are COD and NBC, as they're not 'worse case' situations. NBC sounding like a general channel like BBC1 or ITV1:

This test is informative for people who watch a lot of general TV, since NBC shows a variety of movies, TV shows, sports, and news. The source is a live cable feed and should be representative for a range of general TV content.

Even 'Football' looks to come across well, despite it likely having static graphics - just not to the extend of a 24 hour news channel or FIFA.

Also, these are older models, perhaps the 'image shifting' features new ones might help - but I would think this would only help minimally since most burned in content seems to be larger than a few pixels.

So personally I would agree with Digital Foundry; I would consider the risk of burn in minimal for my personal use-case if I were to get an OLED. And once things do start to show signs of degradation I'll probably be looking for a new TV. I'd say burn is certainly possible, but unlikely.

My old main TV was a Panasonic VT30. A plasma. I've hated babying it because of burn in. But I felt so reassured re OLED burn in, that, when I got my CX, it wasn't even on my mind.

For those looking for a budget 4K TV under £450, here's T3 Magazine's latest recommendations:

T3 wrote:Samsung LED TU7100

Sizes: 43, 55, 58, 65, 70, 75
Features: HDR 10+, 2x HDMI, Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi 5, 1x USB, Freeview Terrestrial TV Tuner, CI slot
Price: from £379

+ Inarguable price/performance ratio; good upscaling; the colour palette is wide and convincing, and skin tones are believable; superb user interface.
- Sounds absolutely dreadful; unpleasant remote control; no Dolby Vision.
= An affordable 4K TV in a great range of sizes, with picture quality and smart TV control that are beyond the asking price. The sad sound and lack of a third HDMI shouldn't put you off getting it.

5/5

Alternatively

Hisense Roku TV B7120UK
Price: from £329

A budget TV ground-breaker. If you want a big screen, a banging picture and bags of apps (but weedy sound), then there's few better purchases right now.

Samsung TU8500
Price: from £449

This is the fanciest non-QLED TV Samsung makes, offering crisp HD upscaling, a lightning-fast 11.7ms response time for gamers and an improved backlight system.

I got this before Christmas in the sale and have to say I've been very pleased so far. The sound is a bit thin, but otherwise no real complaints!

The sound on most modern TVs is abysmal, if your not using at least a soundbar you're doing it wrong.

It's almost as if that's how they planned it.

I was so inured to that situation that I went to great lengths to make sure I could set up my existing soundbar with the CX, but I barely need to use it.

Zavvi have a 2 for £20 4K BR deal on. Think I'll go for Spartacus, Shadow, Blues Brothers and... something else. Is the first Jurassic World any good?

Could someone please check something on Prime for me? They have Blade Runner 2049 on there in UHD. My TV isn't getting the HDR signal for it though. All other UHD shows are fine. BR2049 is meant to have weak HDR, but I can't believe it has *no* HDR...

I don't think it has HDR. I don't currently have Prime, but on their website HDR isn't listed, but for other films that they have in UHD versions, like 1917, HDR is listed.

In regards to what to get as part of the Zavvi deal, I would suggest BlacKkKlansman. Excellent film and looks great in 4K HDR.

So what's everyone's favourite feature on their telly? Obviously talking about things other than image quality. For me, I was super happy to learn that, like, my plasma, the CX has a screen off option. No, I don't mean the off button (smart arse), I mean you can have sound playing but the screen off! It's a great energy saver when you want to listen to something but are busy with something else. I also like the fact you can connect to it via Bluetooth and play music, etc. (That mode also allows for the screen to be turned off.) I also love how snappily the apps react; the set my OLED replaced was slow af when it came loading Netflix, etc. (It also boots up much faster than that set. It's almost as fast as the PS5.)
