Might be the wrong thread, as I guess it's a PC issue, but ah well...

Basically I have my PC plugged into my new TV to stream from UK sites using VPN (VPN doesn't work great on the smart tv app). However, the image is very stuttery and I don't really know why. I don't think it's a connection issue as I also use the VPN on my iPad and the image quality looks great. I have the PC connected through HDMI, but wondering if it's some kind of resolution limit from my PC. Anyone got any ideas?

When you say stuttery, do you mean stuttering as in the download speed isn’t sufficient for the stream, or more like a frame dropping consistently every second or so?

Does the TV have a browser function? If you go to fast.com it’ll do a speed test.

Have you tried connecting a different monitor to see if the problem still occurs? How about trying some different resolutions/refresh rates? Is it a 4K TV? HDMI 2 cable?

Hmm hard to describe, but it isn't remotely smooth to watch. I guess more a frame rate style stutter, rather than it breaking up like a connection. I'm not sure if it has a browser function actually but I assume there's an browser app (Android TV).

@rinks - yes it's a brand new 4k TV. Before we got the TV we were using my PC monitor (about 10 years old) and it's always worked fine with that. No stutter just obviously not spectacular image quality. Same HDMI cable used too I believe. Nothing else stutters e.g my switch, xbox one. Runs fine watching things from my external SSD too. I've tried a couple of different resolutions but didn't notice anything different. Do you know how I would change refresh rates? It's also not just streaming as I tried watching a file on my PC, and it was still weirdly slow and juddery.

It’ll be in advanced display settings, then display adapter properties, and List All Modes.

Also check your TV is set to PC mode for that input, if you have that option.

Cool, thanks. I'll have a look when I finish work.

Changed the refresh rate and its improved a good amount. Not perfect but certainly better. Changed it to 1920x1080 at 60hz. Before the pc was set to something like 3000x something at 30hz.

There's probably a better setting but this will do for now.

Apologies, I've posted this in the Xbox thread, but thought maybe the HDTV Thread minds could help here too:

I feel like my old 1080 LED Sony Bravia isn't allowing the console to demonstrate its potential.

That’ll be the LG BX (recently replaced with the B1 for 2021), CX (recently replaced with the C1 for 2021) and GX (recently replaced with the G1).

Anyone had any issues with the LG CX turning itself off and on again?

Been playing Doom on the Xbox Series X, twice now the TV has just turned off as I was playing, the red standby light flashes a few times then it comes back on again.

Anyone heard of this before? First time I’ve had it since owning the TV last November.

A) automatic sleep timers - check this isn’t turned on in the menus, both on your TV and sound bar/system if you have one
B) HDMI handshake issue - though if the TV is turning off that’s probably unlikely in this case
C) software crash - not sure about WebOS but on Android you’ll know because the TV will switch off and automatically reboot with the Android logo appearing on screen and tends to be caused when you leave the TV on standby for weeks.
D) try turning off HDMI-CEC control in the menus. Make sure SIMPLINK and Auto Power Sync is off.
E) make sure on the Xbox that it’s not set to turn the TV off when it’s powered down or idle.

If it keeps happening too often, a factory reset may be in order.

Option C, my TV does tend to be left on standby a lot as it’s plugged into the same mains as I charge my devices. Is it not good to treat then? Should I be unplugging the TV all the time?

I’ll have to have a look at the HDMI-CEC option, all the sleep timers are switched off from what I can see

I’d recommend unplugging it around once a week. This allows the software to be reset and the TV to start afresh, rather than all the processes gradually running in the background until it gets to the point the TV effectively has to reset itself.

If the TV is still crashing often it also lets you know that it’s likely another issue rather than the TV OS.

I've not had that happen, Milner. (Used to occur all the time on my Panasonic VT30 plasma, though.) Something else you could try: delete recent app activity. (Press home icon button > scroll over to 'recents' > select delete all from the new row which appears.)

Cheers, I’ll try that as well, going to try watching something on the Amazon app later and see if it does it then as well.

To update on my TV problem, I have no further issues using it playing PS5 or Switch or watching stuff on the TV apps. I think the issue is to do with the handshaking between the Xbox Series X and the TV, guessing it’s the HDMI lead that is the issue?

Can anyone recommend a 4K HDMI cable to use on the Series X?

They're on 8k now are they? God, I'm out of touch. It seemed like 1080 was only out 5 minutes before 4k. I still watch DVDs on a Toshiba CRT.

They're on it in the sense you can buy 8k TVs but there's very little content out there and it's at the point where most people won't notice a difference in the resolution increase with their preferred TV size/viewing distance.

Although if you're watching DVDs on a CRT still the difference will blow your mind...

I like the smoothness of CRTs - and they do a good job of masking the horrendous compression artefacts present in digital video. Things look nasty on the big hi-def (not sure if 1080 or 4k) downstairs.

I doubt there will be any significant 8K content for a while yet.
The Olympics in Tokyo are being shown in 8K but that's just a test and I imagine just to future proof the coverage.

I doubt even next gen machines in 8 years will be doing 8K games as standard as 4K still has a long way to go and is more than good enough anyway.

I just wouldn't even consider an 8K set for the next 4 or 5 years.
