The 27" R4 range Samsung I purchased back in 2006 also developed a fault about 3 or so years after purchase - a large line appeared running down the right of the screen. They wanted £500 to fix it, which wasn't far off what I actually paid for it (I think it was about £600). Was a pretty lousy TV in many respects (sound, motion, picture on Freeview/Sky+, consoles through SCART) but was really excellent when paired up with an Xbox 360 and had a superb design.

If you fancy saving yourself some money, I wouldn't rule out some of the 55" Hisense TVs in the £300-£400 bracket either, but I would go see them in a place like Currys or Euronics first.

Features to look out for, though you don't have to hit them all:

- HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) support
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
- Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
- eARC support
- HDMI 2.1, and is it on all ports?
- Response time for gaming of 30 milliseconds or less
- Warranty - how long is it?
- What the image quality or brightness is like when viewed from an angle; does the panel visibly smear, smudge or feature grey "trails" during fast panning shots?

I pulled the trigger on the 55" Hisense, should be arriving on Friday. Hope it lasts longer than my Samsung

It doesn't look like 8k is gaining any traction.

There's almost zero content and gaming won't be 8k for many years. I don't think even next gen will bother and concentrate on 4k hdr and rt.
Maybe in the 2030s but not yet.

So, owned the Hisense a couple of weeks now... First impressions were a bit underwhelming compared to my old Samsung tbh. The initial setup certainly did it no favours. Didn't help that I couldn't find a recommended setup either, so it took some tinkering to get it to a level I was happy with. Happy enough now, gaming and HD content look good, but it's more solid than spectacular.

I think this is prob the biggest issue (brightness from an angle) I have with the Hisense. It's fine from my perfect seat, my wife gets the short end of the stick

Was the Samsung particularly high end? I'd be surprised if it wasn't a match for a 3 year old budget TV of any brand tbh.

Don't think so, but it did get great reviews on t3, what hifi and trustedreviews at the time. I'm happy enough, but yeah it seems more a sideways move than an obvious upgrade.

I don’t know specifically how long this has been the case, but there appears to have been an interesting change from Sony in their marketing and ‘what TV is right for me’ buying advice for the important holiday period, at least here in the UK. On their website and on their in-store literature they’re now only really pushing OLED televisions for movie lovers.

What content do you love?

Movies: OLED and QD-OLED

Despite their latest OLEDs also coming with a range of gaming specific features, it kinda screams to me that they don’t have much faith in the panels holding up under sustained use.

So need a new TV for the new house as the ex has taken the old one.

Not really got a budget but want a decent OLED that'll play XSX and PS5 as well as being able to watch films etc.

I think after research I'm trying to decide between the 65" versions of the LG C3, LG G3 and the Sony A95L. Was set on the G3 but then realized it's more designed for wall mounting and I'm wanting one with a stand.

Big price difference between the LG C3 and Sony A95L but will I notice that much of a difference?

My old TV was the Panasonic TX-50DX750B from 2016, so I expect whatever TV I get I'll notice massive difference?

Whatever you do, don't buy a Sony TV.

LGs have a good reputation on here.

It's coming up to three years and I've been so pleased with my Sony TV. It's still working great; good picture quality and Disney+ loads up quick (as did Netflix but I don't now have that). It has been a really good buy .

The Sony is currently at the cutting edge of what is currently available on the marketplace in terms of picture quality and brightness (for an OLED), but I personally don’t think it’s enough to warrant the £1,000 more you’re going to need to pay for it. You’re also getting two fewer HDMI 2.1 ports compared to LG. The lifespan of the TV is also a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment as I’ve seen a few more people online complaining that the ‘QD’ element is potentially more likely to burn-in than an LG OLED (which is using a different technology to increase peak brightness levels).

The LG G3 is the one to go for…if you can find the stand, which is sold separately, but combined would still be cheaper than the Sony. Currently it’s in stock and available from Richer Sounds, priced £149.

Cheers for the advice mate. Yeah I saw the stand was separate but saw a few people saying it’s not the greatest stand and it tilts the tv up/makes it wobbly which didn’t sound all that appealing.

I might try to pop into Currys/Richer Sound tomorrow and see if they have one on display so I can have a look before making a decision.
