Currently in the market for a 4K TV that can double as a monitor. Something around 43" around the £500-£600 mark. Any suggestions? All the ones I find recommended online seem to be in the US and model numbers don't seem to carry over.

Why? I mean I get that this might have practical uses somewhere (AR glasses maybe), but for gaming it's just stupid.

Its like the transparent displays in sci-fi films only that it actually exists.

What a time to be alive.

Big Apple related update coming to Samsung TVs:

Samsung’s 2018 and 2019 range of televisions will be able to access and play your iTunes movie and TV show library, the company has announced.

You’ll also be able to buy and rent content from iTunes directly from the TV. The content will be available through a dedicated app which will debut exclusively on Samsung’s TVs. The TVs will also include support for AirPlay 2, Apple’s wireless streaming standard.

The iTunes Movies and TV Shows app, which will be available in 100 countries on both Samsung’s 2019 TVs as well as its 2018 models (after a firmware update), marks the first time Apple has allowed third-party devices to access its video library outside of Windows PCs. It could also be a prelude to a video streaming service that Apple is currently rumored to be working on — which is tellingly also reported to be coming to 100 countries.

Apple tells The Verge that Samsung’s smart TV ad-tracking features cannot track viewing usage within the iTunes Movies and TV Shows app, in another example of Apple’s focus on privacy.

Meanwhile, AirPlay 2 support will be available in 190 countries and will allow content such as videos, photos, music and podcasts, to be streamed from Apple devices directly to Samsung’s televisions. It will reportedly be joined by Google Assistant on the company’s 2019 televisions.

Commenting on the announcement, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue said, “We look forward to bringing the iTunes and AirPlay 2 experience to even more customers around the world through Samsung Smart TVs, so iPhone, iPad and Mac users have yet another way to enjoy all their favorite content on the biggest screen in their home.”

Quite surprised just how quickly manufacturers have jumped onto the 8K bandwagon - it's the main focus of CES 2019 this year.

Sony has announced its new 85 and 98 inch Z9G 8K LED Master Series TVs, set to arrive in the second half of 2019. Utilizing a proprietary algorithm, along with the company's latest X1 Ultimate processor and 8K X-Reality PRO technology, the Z9G is also able to upscale content to near "8K picture quality", according to Sony.

Not to be outdone, Samsung has revealed that its 2019 TV lineup, the QLED-based Q900 series, will include another ginormous 98-inch model, accompanied by 65, 75, 82 and 85 inch sets. All of the Q900 TVs uses a Quantum Processor 8K chip that promises to produce "near pristine" 8K and will also support Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple iTunes and AirPlay 2.

Both companies will feature HDMI 2.1 support.

Problem is the TV manufacturers are way ahead of those producing the content.

Apparently 8K broadcast TV is already a thing in Japan.

Apart from Sky Sports 4K the best we get in the UK is 720p :fp:

I'd love for Sony to go back to producing quality smaller sets.

We're very happy with our Sony Android TV, would love a 32" version in he bedroom but are reluctant to go with Philips or Sharp (not that I know of any 32" Android TVs by those brands).

A lot of movies aren't produced in native 4K yet either. Some 4K Blu Rays (such as Everest, which is one of the more heavily discounted releases - it's down to about 6 quid now) is basically the Blu Ray release but with HDR added.

But then Sky still haven't got round to HDR. Which is a joke really when you consider SkyQ costs something like £49 a month minimum just to access the Cinema pack in UHD.

Worth remembering that a lot of earlier digitally-shot movies were shot in "2K" rather than 4K, that's why older movies (converted from 35mm film) and new movies (shot natively in 4K) usually look better than a lot of 00s movies on UHD-Bluray.

As for Sky, is the use of satellite broadcast what's holding it back now? They announced an IPTV streaming alternative early last year but we've head nothing since. Surely the long term solution for Sky is a smart TV app that anyone can download.

I'm sure Sky has had HDR in Italy for a while now, so I don't know what's holding it back in the UK.

I'm usually really excited about new tech but I just can't see the point in 8K yet.
The next gen consoles will just be able to do 4k justice and I don't expect even the mid gen refreshes to give us consoles powerful enough to do 8k let alone 8k 60fps.
As for TV I think 4K will be fine for UK houses and I'd rather they just concentrate on making better 4k sets with better HDR and sound.

Interesting though how neither Samsung or Sony have used OLED on these ultra premium TVs. LG however with their 88'' monster are.

Samsung really not keen on adopting OLED, are they.

They just unveiled "Micro LED" TVs including a set where separate screens can clip together to create a larger screen.

This is similar to OLED in that it uses self-illuminating pixel unlike "QLED" which was basically a fancy name for LED backlit LCD.

Outside of huge American living room's 8K TV really has no purpose.

8K VR will be amazing, but that's a decade away at least.
