My Sony TV that I bought right at the end of 2020 was Android and a software update changed it to Google last year. It has been very good; quick and easy to access broadcasts and streaming apps.

Superb TV, but with seemingly one major caveat…it’s not quite right in daylight. No good as a PC monitor either, but I can’t imagine many people are using a OLED TV for such things.

The LG OLED55C14LB (2021) is currently £899 at John Lewis, plus £100 gift card and 5 year warranty. Or you can have the larger LG OLED65C14LB for £1,349:

You know how the internet is awash with "life hacks"? Well... this one is legit.

I've had my "new" TV for over a year now and, after watching that vid, adjusted my TV... and the picture is better!

So, yeah, turn off "light sensor", "auto brightness" or whatever your TV calls it. It will mean that the TV uses slightly more juice but - as the guy says! - just boil the kettle a couple of times less over the course of the year!

If you're a Sony (Google) user, I found the setting by going into Settings (on the top bar of the screen), then Display & Sound, then Picture, then Light Sensor; set it to Off. You can also access the Light Sensor on/off option directly via the Settings button on your remote - but you initially have to edit the options here to include Light Sensor.

My TV picture now looks brighter and sharper; at least during daytime lighting. Will check it out tonight once it's darker, too. So, thank you to HDTVTest on YouTube :toot:

I think it should be common practice just to turn off any automatic 'picture enhancing' stuff. Pretty much all of it makes your viewing experience significantly worse.

Hi guys, I went to plug my old camcorder into my tv but it has no scart sockets of any kind. To be expected, I guess.
Anyway, can I somehow do it? Maybe get it into a HDMI port somehow?

I'm guessing that your camcorder has RCA sockets (red, yellow, white), Buff? If so, something like this RCA-to-HDMI converter may help.

New HDMI 2.1a Amendment 1 specification released by the certification body HDMI Licensing

The new revision includes a feature called “Cable Power”, which will enable source devices such as game consoles and streaming boxes to provide additional power allowing longer HDMI cables to maintain a strong signal. This new feature will allow those who require longer cables over 3 meters (10 feet) to no longer experience signal degradation & stability issues when viewing higher-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 content.

Both cable and source devices will need to support Cable Power in order for it to work, and you’ll also need to make sure your cable is plugged in the right way, as the feature only works in one direction.

Unfortunately HDMI 2.1a will likely require hardware revisions so won't be compatible with a firmware update on current consoles, televisions and hifi equipment.

Doubt this will really impact anyone here?

Upgrading my LG oled C7 65 to an LG oled B9 65.
My mate is selling up and going travelling. 700 quid.
My mate (who is very happy at this) is getting mine at a very good mates rate. Mine is due for a free power unit replacement servicing. So I'll register it for that and take the upgraded one in a couple of months or so.
So a newer model with a better processor, HDMI 2.1 and Alexa compatability seems a decent upgrade after almost 5 years.
In another 4-5 I'll look at 8 k. I'm happy. My mate has some extra travelling money and my other mate can't believe his luck.
Travelling guy has also thrown in a sonos beam soundbar too. For another 100.
Best bit for me is ive got the room to run a side by side comparison of the two. That should be nice.

I just checked out the tech specs of the LG OLED B9 65... and it rocks! It sounds like it's gonna be such a cool screen for your films and games, Denster.

Its an upgrade. The other's still tip top after r years. It's the HDMi 2.1 im after really.

Going by those specs, it has four HDMI sockets and they're each v2.1. It's great to have at least four HDMIs; my new-ish screen is a relatively modest 43" set but it has four :toot:

On the contrary, this would be very useful in my current setup. The cable running to my projector is about 10m once you run it along the skirting boards, up the wall and across the ceiling edge to where I have it mounted. Right now I do get the odd signal dropout from my AV Receiver, usually when set to the PS5. It's not persistent and I can go weeks without seeing it, but it does happen.

But like it says, it will require hardware revisions rather than a firmware update so I'd need to replace most of my stuff, which I'm at least a few years away from even considering.
