According to the FT today, Sky has plans to launch their own Smart TVs:

Sky is preparing to launch its own smart televisions in one of the company’s boldest moves yet to win viewers in an intensifying battle with streaming services.

The UK-based broadcaster, which has 23 million customers in six European countries, could announce the deepening push into hardware as early as October, said people with knowledge of the plans.

Introducing smart TVs would be among the most significant strategic moves Sky has made since it was purchased for £30bn by US media group Comcast three years ago.

Comcast’s chief executive Brian Roberts was said to have been so impressed with Sky’s technology on a visit to the UK — when he heard favourable comments about it from a London taxi driver — that it encouraged him to bid for the company.

Sky said in a statement: “We constantly look at new technologies to bring our customers more of the content that they love. We don’t comment on product rumours.”

They did launch their own branded “soundbox” a few years ago (made by Devialet) which had good audio quality, albeit very bulky/chunky compared to other brands. Dunno how it sold. If I recall it was around £400, or much less for certain tiers of VIP customers.

Wouldn’t buy it myself. Presumably the OS would be SkyQ, running on a budget or mid range TV like TCL or Toshiba.

Yo KK, it's that time of year again. Got about £2k saved (can go up to £2.5k)

Looking for either a 65" or 70" in the Black Friday sales, any model you recommend?

For that price either the LG OLED65G16LA (better sound, brighter picture with their new “evo” system, but designed to be wall mounted as it doesn’t come with a stand, though one can be purchased separately) and LG OLED65C14LB. Only TV that has a marginally better picture than the G1 is the Sony XR65A90J but there’s a silly price premium on that (you’re paying for a clever sound design that has it emanating from the screen, but for most people they’ll be using a separate soundbar or system which will still sound better). Also doesn’t currently support variable refresh rate for games (though Sony has promised a firmware update).

I still wouldn't bother.
I'd rather have a better 4K set.
There's sod all to watch in 8K and I highly doubt even next gen will bother with it as they will still be getting to grips with 4K 60 with RT. At best that could go up to 120fps with that lot but I'd take that over 8K.

Unless something unforeseen happens again, if I had to predict the year 8K will really take off sales wise it’ll be 2024. All the high end 55”+ models will have it as standard. The PS5 and Xbox refreshes will have also come out, and it’s the year for Olympics and Euro football.

It’ll be like now though where everyone is buying 4K TVs (and even some 8K) and the majority of their viewing will still be made up of Freeview in HD.

One issue with 8K TVs is archive programming, which really begins to fall apart, not helped by the extremely low quality they run SD channels at anyway. I guess the type of people that watch CBS Justice aren’t that bothered.

Most people are buying a 4K tv in the same way they used to buy a 'flat screen'. It's a box tick that tells them their tv is a current one without them necessarily understanding what it means or if they have any use for it. I can't see anyone but the hard-core tech people going for 8k en-masse for a while, and I doubt there will be yet another physical format for it.

The tech manufacturers are always ahead of the content providers (even when they’re often one and the same), so you end up with products that do all these things long before you actually make use of them. By which point you’ve gone and upgraded again anyway. A bit like how a couple of people I knew had 5G phones when they came out. Never used it.

Can't see the point of 8K on 55-65 inch TV even when the content gets there.

I'm guessing it'll be combined with some other 'must have' feature to also push people into upgrading, like how many of us hadn't even heard of things like VRR and HDR (HDR10! No, now you need HDR10+! Oh no wait, what you really need is Dolby Vision!). Not sure how far away Micro LED is from entering mass production.
