The low-down nature of the CX was an issue for my existing soundbar, so I went to some effort to accommodate it on a lower shelf. But to be honest, the sound on the CX is so good, I don’t even use the soundbar the vast majority of the time. Maybe give the C1 a try before you fork out for a soundbar. You might decide it’s not worth it.

That's now ours is set up. The rears are right by our heads to each side, but we've balanced it to work properly with levels and delays.

How did you do that? What gear are you using?

This sound bar

Paired with this rear speaker kit

I adjusted the rear speakers to be ambient rather than dominant in the mix, then added a slight bit of latency via the soundbar. On the ps5 I positioned the speakers in the settings to mimic where they really are, and it sounds amazing.

It really shines on atmos stuff (obviously), as it then uses the top firing speakers for the extra channels. Otherwise, the standard surround sounds great too, especially with music.

No problem. Those rear speakers were way better than I expected them to be too, totally transformed the sound.

strawberry float, surround sound is expensive. I'm very tempted to go for it if I move house - as I've never had it, so fancy treating myself.

This seems to be the cheapest options I've seen for Atmos with rear speakers and it's still almost £900: https://www.richersounds.com/samsung-hw ... ack-1.html :dread:

But I'm a tad worried I'm going to really piss off the neighbours, think I would have to turn the sub right down. But I'm thinking with surround the general sound level doesn't need to be too loud since the speakers are all around you? Am I right be to concerned?

I've got the older version of that without the atmos rear speakers (I wish I'd gone for that in the first place though but it was another £800 on top of the £1k already). The sound is strawberry floating beautiful from it (its the harmon kardon one), just amazing really. The front side firing speakers do such a good job too, just like having separate fronts. You can roll the sub down to nothing in 12 increments, which we do as the evening goes on as we live in a semi detached house. It's very crisp so you don't need to have it loud to get the surround benefit.

Cranked up thoguh with a UHD Bluray atmos soundtrack, daaaayum.

Any soundbar recommendations around £400? Dolby Atmos would be essential. Ideally not too tall either as the LG sits quite low in the stand (not going for the Ad7 special of wall mounted way above the fire place).

I wouldn't recommend a soundbar at the 400 pound mark. For that, you could get a cheap SMSL AD amp and hook up a couple of separates (Elac 5.2's, or, if you can push the boat out a little/find a second hand pair, I'd really recommend the Wharfedale Diamond's). The sound quality improvement, especially with the Diamond's, is magnificent.

Reddit audiophile sub says the same - although soundbars are generally fine, the tweeters/speakers in them are normally small compared to separates and won't give you the same range.

I'm buying a cheap, hundred quid soundbar for my parents this xmas as I can't put them through the added slight hassle of separates, but generally I've noticed big improvements since moving away from soundbars.

Subwoofers aren't intended to be loud enough to shake the room and rattle windows (if they do you're doing it wrong), I have mine just loud enough to be audible but it still makes a big difference to audio quality as it takes the low frequency sounds away from the other speakers so they sound less distorted.

Is it time for the manufacturers to try 3D again yet?

It'll work this time I bet.

Just turned on our brand new LG OLED Evo 65” G1 for the first time now it’s finally been hung in the lounge this evening.

Can’t wait to delve into the various settings and check out what’s what over the coming days. Only hooked up Sky Q at the moment but will set Series X and PS4 up tomorrow.

This will be at CES this year.
Completely impractical but I kind of like it.

Nearly pulled the trigger on that myself today.
From John Lewis for the 5-year warranty?

Richer Sounds in the end.

JL got rid of the £100 off so it was back up to £1299, with a new discount offer instead which was to get £200 off a particularly expensive LG soundbar that I wasn't interested in.

RS however had both the £100 off code showing + £20 off code (intended to allow free delivery next day or nominated day delivery which is £19.95 but you can also choose 3-5 working days free delivery instead) + RS do 6 years instead of 5 years. Got it arriving on Friday. :D

Amazon had it at £1179 but it wouldn't arrive till the middle of next week and I'd rather avoid them if I can help it.

How are you getting on with the c1 GD?
As good as you hoped?

It's fantastic!

Biggest surprise is how much easier daytime viewing is compared to the Panasonic TV I had. With the curtains open and a cloud-free day, it was particularly reflective and difficult to see the image. Not having that issue at all now.

2nd biggest surprise is how good the built in speakers are, they have impressed me so much that I've no intention of getting a soundbar now.

Picture Quality settings out of the box are a little intense (contrast set at 100) and the very unnatural "Trumotion" setting is turned on but got the settings adjusted to my tastes and the picture quality is incredible.

I've not watched a huge amount of 4k HDR content compared to regular 4k or Sky HD but the stuff I have watched is a big step up from the 4k (no HDR) TV I was using. Colours look more punchy and intense without looking unnatural (dynamic / vivid picture mode).

It's the darker scenes too where you can immediately see just how black an OLED can go in comparison to LED. It's basically like the TV itself is off. This youtube video whilst being interesting in itself also looked great on the OLED:

Only criticisms would be:

Still not a fan of the LG Magic Remote with it sometimes turning into a mouse cursor without me being aware of how I did this. And the shape / size / location of the buttons means I'm still occasionally hitting the wrong button in the dark.

Some of the TV shows / movie downloads when connected into the USB port will play the video but say "audio format not recognised" so I have to instead connect the laptop to the TV and play on VLC media player (this was true of my old Panasonic TV too). I think only Samsung seems to support the full range of audio files.

Sorry Rinks! I did see that post the 1st time and definitely remembered it when writing it....I just thought "this is bound to be some bullshit". Genuinely impressive speakers built in is just something I don't associate with any TV that isn't a CRT or one of those monstrous RLP TVs that were around from 2000 to 2005.

Haha, it's OK. It really is quite surprising. I don't know how they managed it.

Maybe bc they're not piddly things the same depth as the screen. It essentially is a soundbar strapped to the back of the set.

I was still tempted to get additional speakers but the conflict the connection causes to consoles or whatever put me off.

Sony the latest manufacturer to do away with numbers on their new TV remotes for 2022, joining Samsung and LG:

Image

Sony is setting some pretty grand expectations with its 2022 TV lineup — led by the introduction of the world’s first consumer QD-OLED TV. The company’s current and well-regarded OLED sets use panels from LG Display that are tuned with Sony’s own processing. But the new flagship Bravia XR A95K TV will include a QD-OLED (quantum dot organic light emitting diode) panel manufactured by none other than Samsung Display. It’ll come in 65-inch and 55-inch sizes, with both coming in at 4K resolution.

QD-OLED is designed to combine the best traits of OLED (perfect blacks, infinite contrast, etc.) with benefits of quantum dot LED TVs like improved brightness and more vivid color reproduction at higher brightness levels. It’s not a major new approach like Micro LED, but more of a progression from where things have stood for a few years.

Sony is still sourcing from LG Display for its other 2022 OLEDs, the A90K and A80K, so that business relationship isn’t going anywhere. But the company now finds itself in the unique position of having two different types of OLED TVs. It’ll be very interesting to see the head-to-head comparisons between QD-OLED and the best “normal” OLED sets from LG and Sony once they all start shipping to consumers this spring.

A lot of PS5 cross-over in their unveiling vid.
