I can't think of a way to say this without coming across like a prick, but this is the exact reason you don't purchase something as important as a new main tv on impulse.

The above examples just looks like righteous punishment for watching Sky News. I’m sure you’ll be alright. Just vary the content you stick on it and use the pixel refresher if you see any retention.

That was my initial reasoning for buying it in the first place, its just that when the stuck pixels happened I panicked and decided to arrange an exchange for a different model rather than a replacement.

Now I've had time to think about it I've realised I'd be going from a great TV with some slight issues to an average one with terrible black levels, based entirely on reading about a few examples of image retention caused by something that probably doesn't apply to what I'll be mostly using the TV for.

I'll have to wait until JL get more in stock but they've said its okay for me to continue using this one until then (incidentally, the line of pixels has gone now but I'd rather get a new one incase there is a serious fault).

Sony's premium televisions (such as the ZD9 and A1) from 2016 and 2017 are currently excluded, as are the PS4 Pro and Apple TV 4K.

Sky Q will get a 4K version, but the service doesn't support HDR.

Bumping for this. Has anyone got this to work yet? We're trying to watch it and it's not switching to the 4k version. I know it works because when this was first brought up I loaded iplayer and there was a 4k hdr test you could run, which I did.

All I can find is the iPlayer help page saying it should be automatic. Sitting here watching upscaled 1080p like a povvo

TVs that are supported will see a specific screen when opening the BBC iPlayer app (maybe it needs a reboot). The episodes are specifically entitled as ‘Blue Planet 2 in UHD’.

Yeah mine is on the compatible list. Can't figure out how to restart it though. It plays 4k content from Netflix no problem so it's not the connection speed.

TV seems to be like a minefield nowdays. It feels way too messy and convoluted merely choosing a set! I plan to stick to my 720p (1080i ) TV and carry on watching Freeview .

A Sony rep told me about this last year in the shop, and looks like they’ve now finally started to replace YouView with Freeview Play.

All their TVs now have it:

It doesn't automatically switch you to the 4k HDR version, you have to go pick the UHD version of the episodes.

It should come on first time you load up the app and then (on my version of the app at least) its right at the bottom on the front page. Not sure but you might have to be running the Beta version of iPlayer.

The Android interface took a bit of criticism, didn't it? I'm sure I read reviews of Sony sets where that was the major downside.

Nobody can touch it for number of Apps, and it looks very nice, but it's prone to lagging massively and as I've found out, can be a glitch ridden mess. Background apps you never knew were even running will just crash at random. The error messages don't make any sense half the time either.

I think it's a combination of Android being a terrible operating system in places and Sony's TV not being technically capable of running it properly.

Hopefully this is a sign Sony have woken up for 2018. It's ridiculous for example how if you buy the other manufacturers you also get Freesat, whereas Sony can't even provide a working TV Guide. That right there is classic Sony. They'll build twin satellite tuners into the TV and then they'll be like 'programming guide? Nah, can't be bothered, mate...just use the free TV guide that comes with the Daily Mail'.

And the worst thing is, the menu systems, graphics and all that stuff easily surpass the likes of SkyHD and Virgin Media (not quite SkyQ levels), and yet they just cannot be bothered to finish it off. Every time I use the Android menu's on my TV it's like a reminder that 'seriously Sony, this could have been amazing.'

And it was the same sometimes with the Vaio laptops. Apple level aspirational design, great hardware, but loaded with some of the worst software and bloatware you'd ever used in your life. They've got much better with PS4, but you can really tell from time to time how Sony really aren't a software company.

I have always had issues with Sony's own software being a buggy mess; I had a netMD minidisc player which had an iTunes style mp3 ripping utility which was the only way to get music off the PC onto minidisc, almost every time I used it my PC would lock up and had to be hard reset (ctrl+alt+del didn't work) - it also had a ridiculous copy protection thing which limited the amount of times a song could be put onto minidisc before you had to re-rip it, also the minidisc could then only be read by the player it was first created on meaning I couldn't use them on my stereo which had an MD drive (as well as the 3cd autochanger).

Said stereo is still fully functional and being used by my parents, unlike the long abandoned Minidisc which I found at the bottom of a drawer the other day.

Hmm yes I have a Q7F. It ran the UHD HDR test they had going on there the other week just fine.

Watched both The Grand Tour and Blue Planet II in 4K yesterday and was suitably impressed by just how clear and crisp the image quality was (although the Amazon video app didn't actually stream in 4K until several minutes into the program - much like Netflix does sometimes with HD content).

Really glad I decided to stick with the OLED, it's just such a brilliant screen in spite of the potential for image retention.

Finally got my new screen on the wall. It’s a bit... wobbly. These new thin screens aren’t so great to wall mount
