Install it on your PC, point it at the folder where your files are, then install the Plex app on your TV.
Streams your files over the local network, and supports multiple audio/subtitle tracks embedded in files.

And it's free.

Plex is brilliant. Depending on the TV you've got you might not have to install the app either.

Remember that MP4 and MKV are just containers for an orgy of other file formats. This means that a TV might be able to read one type of MKV file but then not bother depending on the video or audio codec stipulated when making the MKV file. A Plex server will transcode to suit the Plex app on the fly (provided the computer is powerful enough).

If the video codec and audio codec used to encode the data held within the file container match the formats supported by your TV then you'll just be able to directly stream the content. If not the machine hosting the Plex server will have to decode all of the data and then recode it to a suitable format before it'll appear on your TV screen. The main factors that would limit your ability to do this would be processing power of the host machine and the resolution you want to see on the screen. The correlation is that as resolution goes up, so does CPU processing power requirements.

MP4 is more limited in the codec formats it accepts and will nearly always be a variant of H.XXX which nearly all TVs support so you're less likely to have any problems with it.

Your 2017 model is an older set.

It also, likely, doesn't support the latest version of Android which runs quicker.

So I'm in the market for a 4K UHD player and I'm wondering what the One S is like in that department. Anyone use one for 4k discs? Game have a decent deal at the moment of console, Forza, RDR2 and something else for £200 and I've got about £70 worth of credit. Best other budget player looks to be around £130. I guess I'd need a media remote as well?

Not the S but I've been using the Xbox One X as a 4K player and aside from Blue Planet 2 (which has manufacturing residue on the disc that needs to be wiped off first; not really a big issue) it has been excellent. The regular controller works fine, though it did take me a couple of days to get used to bringing the menus up/pausing (it's on B).

If you plan on playing games, either of the One's are a far better value proposition than a dedicated player. The only complaints I've heard about the S in terms of films was from WhatHiFi magazine - everyone else has found it perfectly fine.

Your 2017 model is an older set.

It also, likely, doesn't support the latest version of Android which runs quicker.

I wouldn't mind if it was a budget or mid range model but its one of most expensive non OLED models, screen wise I can't fault it but the OS and user interface are woefully poor.

My first and last Sony TV, never again.

I’m on the look out for a 32 inch tv for my sons bedroom, mainly so he can play his Xbox one so I needs to be 1080p however I’ve noticed that there are a lot of 720p sets about. When you finally find a 1080p set that seems decent they don’t seem much cheaper than 40 inch plus 4K sets. Why are the 32 inch TVs so expensive in comparison?

Because there isn't much market for 32" screens anymore so the prices go up as they aren't as mass produced as larger sets.

32” Sony 720p and 1080p sets were going for low prices on eBay the other day (between £250 and £350). May be worth looking on there from an official channel (Tesco, Argos and Co-Op electrical). They were HDR enabled too.

Thanks, I had just started looking at them funnily enough. Still annoying that there are plenty of top branded 4K 40-49 inch sets out there in the £300s. Feels like such a rip off to pay that for a 32 inch 1080p set.
