8K is pretty much useless for me, I am at the maximum distance for being able to see 4K now. I'd need like a 200" screen or something
8K surely isn't going to be for the everyday home but for commercial/public applications

Watching Infinity War 4K on my C8 was so good
But holy gooseberry fool the wasted screen real estate. Film makers need to switch to 16:9, the current resolution is such a shambles when a huge portion of viewing is going to be on home screens which are probably 90%+ 16:9 displays.

Cinema screens aren't 16:9 though, most filmmakers probably don't give a gooseberry fool about us home viewing plebs.
I do find it irritating though when there's huge horizontal borders on the screen.

I’ve watched quite a few films recently that didn’t have the massive borders, such as Life of Pi and Inferno.
One negative I’ve noticed with HDR content on LCD panels though, it half show up the uneven backlighting on very dark scenes when the brightness is cranked up to maximum.

Also, doesn't appear that Amazon has a dedicated channel or any integration with the universal search.

I never really know what to think about Android TV. It's the best option out there but I still find it mainly disappointing compared to what I envision a TV ecosystem being like. That said, 8.0 is a great improvement overall.

It's great that there's personalised channels and universal search, these now need to work with more than just Google Play, Netflix and YouTube though.
YouView needs to be integrated into the system too.

I don't really use any of the smart TV features other than the Netflix and Amazon video apps, have never used the google play or Sony stuff as I don't buy films or music digitally.
I kind of wish you could turn off/uninstall Android and just use it as a basic freeview TV as my Bluray player has both Netflix and Amazon apps anyway, and doesn't take ages to start up.

What HiFi likes it a lot but it hasn't cost £2000 for a while. Still a good price for a good TV.

Probably but you'd never buy a TV if you followed that path and you'd be paying more.
I would go for it. It's still £200 cheaper than anywhere else.

My dad gave me a 50 inch telly a few years back. But I ended up leaving it at my mums (separated). Always with the intention of using it again...anyway I have moved to Cyprus now and didn’t bring it with me.
So here is the issue, my step mum has just text asking if I had the tv in Cyprus they ‘lent ‘ me and if they could have it back. Bloody hell. So yeah. My mum will be tellyless as I took her smaller older one to Cyprus with me so she could have my dads 50inch one.
So it’s nearly mother’s day and her birthday so I may buy her one. I have a budget of 200-300 quid. What’s the best I can get that would suit a middle aged women who really isn’t into specs and all that but just wants to watch gardeners world. Obviously the better I can buy the better as I will use this telly when visiting.
I’m very out of touch with this stuff since 2006 though.
tL;Dr? Just the budget of 250-300 and best possible telly. Above 40imch please

https://www.whathifi.com/news/you-will- ... ch-oled-tvGood news, TV technology fans - OLED TVs are about to get much more attainable. LG Display, which makes OLED screens for all the big OLED TV brands, has announced it will be adding a new, smaller screen size to its panel line-up; a 48 inch.
OLED TVs currently only go as small as 55 inches, so if you're in the market for a new TV with what's widely accepted as the best screen technology right now, you have to go big, and spend the money to match.
A 55in OLED for £999/$1999 is about as cheap as OLED TVs get right now - and that's with a healthy discount - but if the big brands are given the option to release 48-inch OLED TVs, we can only assume that price of OLED entry will drop further.
The news was released by LG Display at the OLED Korea conference, reports OLED info. It wasn't clear when the smaller OLED TV screens would be made available but clearly LG Display is confident it can produce smaller screens with a high enough yield to make it feasible.
Smaller OLED TVs have been produced in the past but not in large numbers for mass market consumption. Similarly there have been smaller OLED screens on sale, but only in the shape of monitors.
LG Display also said it would be upping total production of OLED TV panels to around 10 million in 2021, an increase from 3 million in 2017. This would also include 8K OLED panels in 65-inch and 77-inch sizes, joining the previously announced LG 8K TVs.
Looks like it could be a big year for OLED, and with Samsung's 2019 QLED TVs off to a strong start, a smaller, more affordable screen size could come in handy.
