Anyone looking for a really cheap 4K HDR TV, Amazon has reduced Sony’s entry level 43” XF7002 to £372 for today only: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07C48DGB4/ ... JCb0GNSP8V

Alternatively the XE8004 is £555. The 4K X800 Blu Ray player is also down to £170.

As part of a pilot program, Google has added a new sponsored content section to some Android TV devices, the company confirmed in a statement to XDA Developers.

That reaffirms an earlier report of some users noticing advertisements appearing on their Android TV-based Sony X900F TVs, though a statement from an Nvidia representative denies that the ads are appearing on Shield TVs – which implies that the problem might just be contained to Sony smart TVs.

If the update has been deployed to your device, you’ll notice a new 'Sponsored Content' row on the home screen in between your recommended content.

Unlike other channels on Android TV, those who have the update claim the sponsored row cannot be customized in any way, nor can it be removed in the typical way – requiring those users to disable the Android TV Core Services app and manually restart the system.

That said, while no one likes seeing advertisements spring up in a place where there were none before, what’s particularly frustrating is the way in which Google stealthily deployed the update and in the lengths some users have needed to go through to remove them.

Placing advertisements – or, as Google calls it, Sponsored Content – is a touchy subject for TV and home entertainment enthusiasts. Both TiVo and Roku caught flak when they introduced advertisements to their respective devices, and Vizio was fined $2.2 million for its deceptive ad practices in 2017.

To its credit, Sony has already deployed an FAQ about the new sponsored content section on its TVs answering questions like “What determines which apps will appear in the Sponsored channel?” and “Can I add or remove the apps in the Sponsored channel?” (The answers to those are: Google determines this content, and no, they can’t be removed.)

What Sony makes apparent in the post is that this is very clearly a Google mandate – Sony may use Google’s smart TV platform but it’s not in charge of these ads.

So why is this happening? According to Google, “Android TV is committed to optimizing and personalizing the entertainment experience at home. As we explore new opportunities to engage the user community, we’re running a pilot program to surface sponsored content on the Android TV home screen.”

...Which, if you ask us, sounds like a really polite way of saying "we're putting ads on your TV".

Samsung already do this as well, unfortunately.

Yeah there's some roku tv channel that keeps popping up and auto playing whenever I power something like the ps4 down. Boils my piss becuase I remove it, disable it and it just keeps coming back playing shitty trailers for 5 year old films.

It's my tv, I don't want ads and I won't watch them so strawberry float off.

I haven't looked because a) I don't have this problem, and b) this is the first time I've heard of it, but there must be a subreddit out there in how to block and/or remove that stuff.

Same here, its my TV and I should have full control over what content is shown on it, including apps and ads.

I'm glad to say I've never experienced this on any of my TV's.

A TV should only ever be a passive device and never have any ability to decide what's displayed.

Seems a decent price but has mixed reviews.

What ads are we on about here?

If it's just recommending new apps on the store then great.

So I moved house over the weekend and my TV managed to get a scratch on it. I moved it in the box it came in, but I think in one of the bags for remote/plug I put the small screws needed for the legs in. :fp:

Good news is that the scratch isn't deep and when the TV is on you can barely notice it, however it is quite visible when the TV is off (or a very dark scene), it is also right in the middle which is annoying. What is the best way to deal with this? Leave it as is as it isn't actually impacting the image on screen? My main concern is I try to fix it and end up making it worse... Seen some products online but quite hesitant of them all (sprays, wipes, erasers etc) and the reviews.

Any tips? Even if just the best type of cloth to wipe the screen with etc.

So what is RTings then? Is it a like a metacritic type thing or are these ratings from users or something?

Aim to pickup a 4K set some time later in the year so need to start getting my research hat on!

It's a consumer reviews website for TVs and headphones, albeit the most thorough on the market. Similar to Techradar, WhatHiFi, Which?, T3, Stuff etc. They don't review Philips or Panasonic however, instead focusing on TCL and Vizio - neither of which are available in the UK.

Cool. Shame about the lack of Panasonic reviews - my last two sets have been from them and have been excellent.

Having a quick look over the market I think my main challenge is going to be finding a set that isn't strawberry floating massive. I want a nice 4K TV that is around 40", but everything on the market seems to be aimed at 55"+
