You just need to do a bit of research online before purchase is all as there will most likely be info about what the changes are.
Although Black Friday is tempting for TV deals I'd say the best thing to do is wait for post Christmas sales if you can as you'll avoid any black friday tv shenanigans and hopefully still get a good deal. Also if you can maybe bookmark the model you want now before they do substitute a new cheaper version and maybe write it down so you can see at a glance any changes made.

For the first year or 2 Black Friday was great but it's all become shitter and shitter as they use it to just dump unsold stock.

Definitely choose the model(s) of TV you want prior to Black Friday. Samsung are the worst offender of the big players to release shop-exclusive models. So you’ll see something in Curry’s and it won’t be available anywhere else. Sometimes though it’s nothing more than a cosmetic change to the bezel or stand.

Don't buy sony stuff. The OS is utter gooseberry fool (I'm sure ironhide will wade in here).

If you plan on using the Google Android OS, I’d struggle to recommend it. It has apparently improved over the version(s) I’m using, particularly on their high end 2019 TVs, but as that review points out it’s still sluggish. It’s also prone to major stability issues (that’ll either bring up error messages that mean nothing or crash the whole TV) but this tends to occur more often when you leave the TV on stand-by rather than switch it off at the mains.

Picture quality is generally outstanding though, and LED still has the benefit of being able to get extremely bright with HDR, so hooked up to something else like a PS4 or Apple TV it’s great.

There are days however when I’m using the Xbox One X and then Google Android on the TV and I want to take a shotgun to the whole lot. Error, lock up, update, black screen, crash...ARGH!

There's an OS of some sort of my current TV, but I never, ever use it.

I turn the TV on at the same time as I turn on the Sky box or the Switch, or as I plug in the Amazon box. Does anyone actually use the OS on the TV itself?

Or am I misunderstanding?

I have a Samsung TV and the OS is fine I suppose.
It's quite user friendly and apart from it forgetting the names of the consoles I have it's a TV OS so it's fine I suppose.

That's about the most I can say about it .

I'm also almost unable to get a TV signal in my room with my TV aerial so as a TV it's not the best .

Depends how much you need to use and rely on apps like Netflix, iPlayer etc., the programming guides (You View, Freesat) and in Android’s case, videogames. For example if you enable YouView on some Sony TVs it’s prone to slowing the menus and operation of the TV down even more. Or if you opt to use a satellite feed the TV guide doesn’t work properly.

If you opt to use it as a ‘dumb TV’ (i.e not connected to the internet) and have no reason to ever use the menu systems beyond set-up, then all of this is mostly irrelevant. But that doesn’t really change the fact Sony’s televisions are usually the most expensive on the market so you expect this stuff to work as advertised rather than come off half-arsed. But this is as much Google’s fault as Sony’s, who presumably haven’t provided fast enough memory and processors to power Android’s bloat.

Hey team. In the market for a 55" 4K non-curved TV this Black Friday. What are my best options?

Currently considering the SAMSUNG UE55RU7470UXXU.

But yes, the Android OS is a pile of shite.

Youview is awful too and I ditched it almost immediately as it was so slow to respond that just changing channels sometimes took a couple of seconds.

Polaroid is the only sensible choice.

Beautiful telly. I was very tempted to get one, but my kids keep leaving the telly on pause. OLED was out of the window then so I got a QLED 65" instead. It's good but not as good as the GZ950 for black & motion.

I am also in the market, looking for 65 inches of pleasure with a budget of around £1.2k.

Thought I'd found the perfect option on John Lewis, think it was the QE65Q90. Came with a sound bar, which I also need. Bugger is currently out of stock .

Not sure where else to look.

I got another 500 off mine by waiting till January. Its worth doing if you have a model in mind and don't mind waiting.
