While I didn't notice things differently straight away, last night I was parusing my screenshots that I took on my X1X and before update if I turned the HDR on, it was a slight difference but since I updated my TV the difference with HDR is MASSIVE, I'm actually blown away how much better they look. In some cases it looks like it's an actual remaster of the the same screenshot in SDR.

Yep, I think people will notice better HDR much more than they ever will 8K.

I also love the remote, and how you don't need a track pad as it is I believe gyro-based ? :toot:

Next on the list is some sort of sound bar although I don't think there is much clearance between the bottom of the TV and the stand so I am not sure what to go for :?

Have a look at Yamaha's range of soundbars, I have one from a few years ago and not only does it sound great, its really low profile and as it has a fabric/foam covered speaker grille there's no annoying reflections like you get with a glossy finish.

Its basically this one but mine doesn't have bluetooth

OK, now I’ve got a solid reason to get a 4K set.

I've had my OG C7 for 2 years and just realised I had to turn HDR on in the menus :fp: The difference is staggering.

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to a 4K disc over a 4K download? Or will they be essentially the same in terms of performance?

The disc will always be superior. The resolution may be the same, but the amount of compression used for the download will make it inferior. The main benefit of disc is the lossless audio.

Thanks Ad, that’s helpful. i’m going to upgrade my whole set up once this situation blows over, as my TV is 11 years old (although still performing well).

I'd maybe suggest waiting until at least CES in January to see if TV manufacturers make high refresh modes a highlighted feature now that the next gen consoles seem to be going that way as well.

I think realistically a brand new set will be out of my budget. Considering the LG E9 given the recommendations in here. Plus a soundbar and the new Apple Tv should be good to keep me going for another decade.

Thinking of getting a new set for the living room in preparedness for the next-gen, what's good in the 42" category these days?

I've got a Sony Bravia KDL 40" from 2016 at the moment, this will get moved to the bedroom.
Been really happy with the Sony actually. Used to have Panasonic Plasmas before that but their led offerings were gooseberry fool at the time.

Is 42" really your limit? Modern TVs are incredibly thin with very small bezels, so you can go bigger and still fit in with a smaller room. The higher definitions of a 4K set mean you can sit closer to a larger screen too. I'd definitely recommend looking at something above 50" if your budget can stretch to it.

What’s the best way to deal with too many HDMI connections needed?

Well, if you’re planning on getting a surround setup any time soon, receivers have multiple inputs and will output to the tv. Or, I bought a hdmi Switch relatively cheaply from amazon. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B078H3BBKX/ ... YEb93DDC7H
When buying a switch make sure it’ll support things like 4K, HDR10/Dolby Vision if you’re using those sources.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether the Sonos Beam is still worth it? It seems to be exactly the soundbar I'm looking for (compact, well priced, well reviewed, upgradeable) but I'm a bit put off by the fact that it's been out a while and still costs the same amount. In fact, it's been cheaper than it is now.

I have the beam along with the little ones (Play One?) throughout the house and it's great, highly recommend.

Cheers. I do like the look of it, I just don't like buying 'yesterdays tech'. If it had just been released I'd have already bought it.

If you're a gamer looking to buy a premium TV that's going to last you a few years it makes sense to go for one that supports FreeSync. This means if you're gaming on an Xbox One X, Series X and probably PS5 there will be no screen tearing. Some also have G-Sync for Nvidia PC gamers who want to play on a big screen.
