by more heat than light
It's a grim scene and the film is better without it.

Apparently it died a few hours later. And even if it didn't, you're torturing a small animal for entertainment purposes...

I'm not sure that's true, the rat in the film died a few weeks before the film came out rather than during production.

It did however gooseberry fool itself out of the terror and persistent feeling of drowning during that scene.

I didn't say it was alright. I'm pointing out it was 35 years ago, the rat doesn't get tortured every time somebody watches the movie.

The rat didn't die but I'm sure it suffered during the scene. I'd in no way support movie makers doing that today.

If we are to ban scenes/movies like that though then we are going to have to get rid of a hell of a lot of movies.

If you are serious about rat welfare then I'd suggest your efforts would be better spent campaigning to ban rat poison and rat traps. They are far more horrific than anything that happened while filming the Abyss and torture hundreds of millions of rats to death every year.

Don't think that makes me a wimp for not wanting to watch an animal get tortured but alright.

It's almost CES time again so I wonder what fancy new tech they have in store.

I didn't call you a wimp or insist that you watch the movie.

KK wrote:I don’t know specifically how long this has been the case, but there appears to have been an interesting change from Sony in their marketing and ‘what TV is right for me’ buying advice for the important holiday period, at least here in the UK. On their website and on their in-store literature they’re now only really pushing OLED televisions for movie lovers.

Our new BRAVIA XR line-up is designed to enhance the entertainment content that you love. Stark brilliance with absolute contrast. Cinematic audio with our unique sound from screen technology. Packed with gaming features including exclusive Perfect for PlayStation 5 capabilities. Find the best TV for your entertainment content.

What content do you love?

Sport: Mini LED/Full Array LED
Movies: OLED and QD-OLED
Gaming: Mini LED/Full Array LED
Anime: Mini LED/Full Array LED

Despite their latest OLEDs also coming with a range of gaming specific features, it kinda screams to me that they don’t have much faith in the panels holding up under sustained use.

Turns out there was something to this after all:

Sony has taken the wraps off dramatic new TV backlighting technologies that it believes will elevate Mini LED above OLED (even QD OLED) in the picture performance stakes.

The company has developed new panel driver tech that it suggests will enable Mini LED screens to offer more dynamic HDR, delivered with greater precision.

Intrigued, we travelled to Sony HQ, Tokyo, for a closer look.

Behind closed doors, HCC was shown prototype display wizardry that will have enthusiasts rethinking their next choice in panel technology.

The headline takeaway is that Sony seems to be strategically positioning Mini LED, not OLED, as the preferred display technology when it comes to bringing the creators' intent home. Toshiyuku Ogura, Sony Distinguished Engineer, told HCC that Mini LED 'has greater potential when it comes to colour volume, brightness, and viewing angle.'

Back in the world of OLED, LG’s new transparent TV looks like a sight to behold:

Saw a price drop on the TCL C805K I've been eyeing up for a while and decided to take a punt on it. It's a vast improvement on our old telly. I'm sure it's lacking compared to a Samsung QN90 or an LG OLED. But I've been happy with it.

Couldn't fit in the 55", so we've got the 50" (gutted tbh, would have loved an extra 5").

Old set:
Booooo! You Suck McBain!

New set:
Woohoo!

Just need to tweak some settings, but that'll be a job for when our sons don't want to use our flash new telly to... *Checks notes* .. play Minecraft.

It was 6 years in January since I got my OLED. Got to say its still absolutely stunning. No screen burn. Beautiful.
Only issue is it doesn't have the 120hz refresh rate for gaming. But that can wait until I need to upgrade. Best thing I've ever bought.

Sony unveiled their new 2024 range of televisions yesterday and nothing for us lot to get excited about unfortunately. While the new Mini LED tech in the Bravia 9 (they’ve finally simplified their naming conventions) is a potential game changer, the implementation of a 4-way multiposition stand long overdue, and the new Amazon automatic calibration tool possibly resulting in considerable less menu faff to get the ‘perfect’ picture, Sony have decided they’re not going to release the 65” model in the UK, meaning prices start at over £4,000 for 75”+. It then gets more ridiculous when you realise they’ve fitted just the 2 HDMI 2.1 ports again.

Sony have priced and sized themselves out of the premium market for the vast majority, making LG the obvious safe choice for another year if you’re in the market for a new TV.
