Denster presents: The 4K/8K HDR HDTV Thread

TV has arrived but probably won't get set up for a while as the room its going in (former conservatory, now rebuilt as proper room) isn't quite finished due to covid related delays.

I've now decided that I'm not going to use the CX as much until the PS5 arrives. Or at least that, I will use it, just in the SDR Dark Room setting; it's next gen gaming I have primarily bought it for and so I don't want the wow factor to fade before I've even booted up a next gen game

I checked out the 4K gameplay video of Miles Morales, damn it looks amazing!

Beverly Hills Cop announced for the 4K treatment on 30th November. Unfortunately doesn’t include 2.

Even better way of selecting input: hold 0 on the number pad to open the quick access feature. Then you can assign an input (or app) to numbers 1 to 8. For example, I now only have to hold down 4 to start iPlayer. It’s very handy.

Has anyone watched the 4k versions of Jurassic Park or Ghostbusters? Wonder if they are any good or not.

I have Ghostbusters in 4K on disc. It's definitely an upgrade from the Blu-ray version but it's not the best 4K movie compared to other 80's movies in 4K.

The 4K version is on Amazon Prime Video if you have that.

What's the deal with watching/playing 1080p content on a 4K screen these days then?

Our TV seems to be on the blink and so there's a good chance we'll be replacing it before the end of the year (most likely with the LG Nano model suggested in here by SoK last week ) but moving from 1080p to 4K has me wondering how good the results will be for the lower resolution content. I recall that pushing anything other than native resolution through PC monitors tends to look like gooseberry fool so I'm concerned that anything I have which is outputting at 1080 is going to look crap when I make the switch? I'm guessing it depends on how good the upscaler is on the TV more than anything?

1080p should look fine on a reasonable quality 4K TV, SD stuff will look like utter arse though.

I think this is one of the key things putting me off getting a new TV (err... besides money, anyway). I wouldn't really be playing any 4K stuff on it and I kinda worry that I'd get a spanking fresh TV and be thinking "yeah, it doesn't actually look that good".

Yeah that's my worry, I don't want buying a new TV to then force a cycle of having to upgrade everything else connected to it because it looks terrible!

Do any modern TVs with built-in Freeview / apps (Netflix etc) also come with the option to record specified programmes? (So, AFAIK, with a built-in hard drive?)

I currently use a HD TV wired up to a Freeview recording box, but the box is showing its age somewhat. It would be nice to upgrade, but the TV is also quite old (older than the box) and while it shows no current signs of imminently conking out, I would fully expect that it may do so after we spend money on a new receiving/recording box (because, y'know, sod's law). However, if there are TVs out there with the functionality we're after (players like Netflix; ability to permanently record live TV) then it may be worth just purchasing one of these... if such a thing even exists!

I have seen online that there are TVs which are compatible with the functionality I'm looking for, but only if you also make use of a plug-in external USB hard drive. This isn't something I would want (before any of you old types start reposting a meme so ancient it wasn't even called a meme back then..)

This is something I'm not sure about. I'm not really knowledgeable on TV's as I've not had one in years as I move around too much. But I'm planning on getting one soon, possibly during Black Friday sales. Stuff like my Xbox one, Blu-Rays, Switch and HD stuff on my computer should still look good, right? I'm thinking of getting a Series X, but not any time soon. From my limited research the TCL 55C715 fits my needs, though I'm sure there are better ones for a similar price.

Just do a search for the set you're interested and add '1080p scaling' to see how it handles it. In most cases I think it won't be as sharp as a native 1080p set, but it also won't be so bad that it'll be akin to watching a screen with Vaseline smeared over it. As for SD content on modern TVs... that ship sailed a very long time ago.

Why are you set against the idea of recording onto a USB stick, SD card, etc?

That really is a level of laziness I've never considered before I mean, you stick the external storage in once and that's it. You never have to bother with it again. How can anyone see that as a chore? Ordering the TV in the first place takes more effort! (To say nothing of unpacking the thing.) The closest thing about it to being tedious, is having to check what size storage the TV will or won't accept.
