My last CRT was a Sony Trinatron. It was mostly good, but you should have seen the image warping at the left edge of the screen toward the end of its life. It was like when a camera in a old Western trucks and the image compresses at the edge of the screen. Dunno if that was down to it being a Sony, or a limitation of flat screen CRTs.

Throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s there was definitely nothing better on the market than Sony Trinatron branded TVs and monitors. Only when the patent ran out in the mid 90s did other TV manufacturers catch up, leading Sony to launch WEGA, which was also extremely good. Sony have never been able to quite capture the magic again with their Bravia LCD and OLED lines, though that's mainly because the competition from LG, Samsung, Panasonic and Pioneer (R.I.P) were and are all excellent.

We could never afford a Trinatron in our house, so Sharp and BUSH had to suffice. May have even been a Sanyo in there as well.

I bought the wireless rear speaker kit for my setup today



I knew I was missing some rear sounds, although you'd assume being all in one that the sound bar would mix the rear channels in somehow, but connecting these has made such a difference. Put a bit of spiderverse and top gun on to test the atmos, and it's made such a difference already. Was going to get wall brackets, but I'll probably get some free standing mounts for them now.

My last CRT was a cheapo Phillips widescreen which had a wonky screen that was slightly out of alignment so it cut off about 10 pixels from the right edge of anything displayed on it.

Might not be the thread for this but what kind of lighting do you all use behind/around your TV?

Now I got the LG 55 CX it takes up all the space in my TV unit, I had a lamp that sat alongside my old 43” TV which I now moved to behind the TV (one of those long neck adjustable ones) and have it bent so the bulb is facing towards the ceiling, it’s a bit awkward trying to re@ch the switch to turn it on and off though.

I wondered if there is a better solution, maybe something that I can control with my phone?

Philips Hue lightstrip

Don't have one myself but my brother has a few in his kitchen as undercupboard lights and he (read as his mrs likes them ) says they're pretty good.

Thinking of sticking one behind my TV when I eventually get it wall mounted.

My LG 55” GX arrived this morning. Can’t wait to get it on the wall.

Got my Panasonic TX-43HX580BZ today ready for the PS4 next week (cheers for the recommendation the a few months ago mhtl!). Just spent the evening pissing about with the settings, horrible motion smoothing thing was turned on by default that made 30fps games look like 60fps but made HUDs look blurry during fast movement.

Don't really have any way of watching 4K content yet other than the built-in YouTube and Netflix apps though.

If you're not fussed about multicoloured options, you can get pretty affordable bias lighting LED strips that plug into your TV's USB port (and thus turn on and off with the TV) for around £10-20.

Look for one with a white colour temperature of 6500k as that is considered optimal for perceived image contrast and fidelity enhancement.

I have mine as a single horizontal strip about a quarter of the way down from the top of the TV. The light is bright and illuminates sufficiently around all edges.

I'm going to give this a go at £11.50. If I like it and it works well then I might upgrade to Hue down the line.

The 65" has been on HotUKDeals 2 or 3 times from different sellers (I think one was John Lewis) at around that price - if I'm not mixing up their confusing model numbers.

I don't know why companies do this, I had to disable all that crap when I got mine too. Just show the picture as intended, it's not hard.

Makes a huge difference. It gives you a competitive advantage, too. I don't really play FPSs any more (and I was shite when I did) but the ability to hear where shots are coming from, and to hear people moving behind you, is really useful.

The surround implementation on Spiderverse was excellent; it was also great on Haunting of Bly Manor (though the show was shite). They did some really spooky stuff with individual speakers. Genuinely freaky at times.

I debated going without when I was decluttering my TV unit at the start of the year, but I missed having surround pretty much instantly.
