I knew I was missing some rear sounds, although you'd assume being all in one that the sound bar would mix the rear channels in somehow, but connecting these has made such a difference. Put a bit of spiderverse and top gun on to test the atmos, and it's made such a difference already. Was going to get wall brackets, but I'll probably get some free standing mounts for them now.
Makes a huge difference. It gives you a competitive advantage, too. I don't really play FPSs any more (and I was shite when I did) but the ability to hear where shots are coming from, and to hear people moving behind you, is really useful.
The surround implementation on Spiderverse was excellent; it was also great on Haunting of Bly Manor (though the show was shite). They did some really spooky stuff with individual speakers. Genuinely freaky at times.
I debated going without when I was decluttering my TV unit at the start of the year, but I missed having surround pretty much instantly.
I used to have a pretty cheap 5.1 surround system I used with my ps3 back when I lived on my own and in the flat, but the room here wasn't suitable to use it (doors in each back corner). I used to have The rear speakers quite far back from the sofa so there was an excellent surround effect going on.
The sound bar I bought with the new tv Is this one
Being an Atmos 7.1.2 system, I (mistakenly) thought it was mixing the rear channels in somehow and virtually throwing them to the back of the room. The sound was always heavily front loaded (You did get the up above sounds from the top firing speakers though, spiderverse sounded amazing). It was only recently playing TLOU2 that when a character went behind the camera, the speech would disappear. I tested it on other games with a noise you could rotate the camera behind, and it would always dissapear. Now with the add on rear speakers, the whole room is filled with sound again, I'd forgotten just how good it can be.
With hindsight, I should have paid for the better model which included better rear speakers (those ones have up firing on the rear speakers too, but won't work with mine), but I'm really happy with it now.
Top gun was incredible with them when we tested it the other night.
