I knew I was missing some rear sounds, although you'd assume being all in one that the sound bar would mix the rear channels in somehow, but connecting these has made such a difference. Put a bit of spiderverse and top gun on to test the atmos, and it's made such a difference already. Was going to get wall brackets, but I'll probably get some free standing mounts for them now.

Makes a huge difference. It gives you a competitive advantage, too. I don't really play FPSs any more (and I was shite when I did) but the ability to hear where shots are coming from, and to hear people moving behind you, is really useful.

The surround implementation on Spiderverse was excellent; it was also great on Haunting of Bly Manor (though the show was shite). They did some really spooky stuff with individual speakers. Genuinely freaky at times.

I debated going without when I was decluttering my TV unit at the start of the year, but I missed having surround pretty much instantly.

I used to have a pretty cheap 5.1 surround system I used with my ps3 back when I lived on my own and in the flat, but the room here wasn't suitable to use it (doors in each back corner). I used to have The rear speakers quite far back from the sofa so there was an excellent surround effect going on.

The sound bar I bought with the new tv Is this one

Being an Atmos 7.1.2 system, I (mistakenly) thought it was mixing the rear channels in somehow and virtually throwing them to the back of the room. The sound was always heavily front loaded (You did get the up above sounds from the top firing speakers though, spiderverse sounded amazing). It was only recently playing TLOU2 that when a character went behind the camera, the speech would disappear. I tested it on other games with a noise you could rotate the camera behind, and it would always dissapear. Now with the add on rear speakers, the whole room is filled with sound again, I'd forgotten just how good it can be.

With hindsight, I should have paid for the better model which included better rear speakers (those ones have up firing on the rear speakers too, but won't work with mine), but I'm really happy with it now.

Top gun was incredible with them when we tested it the other night.

Hi guys can anyone help me with this specific request.

Going to need to buy a TV that's only gonna have at most 1 year of use before we leave the country.

Doesn't need to be too fancy, freeview built in would be a plus. Probably just 32", 720 etc.

Would like to not spend more than £100 if possible - anything I should be keeping an eye on going into Black Friday?

Are you based anywhere near South Wales? I've still got my old 40" 1080p Samsung LCD tv upstairs. It's bloody great, but I've not used it once since we got our new one a few years back. You could have that for dirt cheap as we're going to get rid of it at some point as it takes up too much room in the spare room.

Alas I am in Hackney and cannot drive. Thank you so much for the offer though - that would have been bloody perfect!

Ah balls. I'd say to post it, but it's heavy and I've got nothing to pack it in. Plus I could see it costing £50 just to post.

I've got an old Samsung upscaling DVD 5.1 system sat unused too if anyone reads this and fancies both for cheap.

I bet Yodel would drop kick it over the back gate for a tenner.

Got my mum and dad a new TV, now looking for a way for them to get freeview channels. They don’t have an aerial at the moment, can you get a freeview stick or something that connects to WiFi that will allow them to get BBC/ITV etc....?

AFAIK you need an aerial to receive Freeview regardless of how you watch it.

There's a few phone/tablet apps (I've used TV Player before but wasn't impressed) to watch freeview channels but you're limited to sub 480p quality and the choice of channels is very limited (unless you pay, whick kind of defeats the purpose of Freeview).

They could try an indoor aerial but in my experience they just don't work properly.

Yeah, the only way I know of with some 'stick' type setup is essentially around casting a streaming service (iPlayer etc)- but it's not something I've done for a while so there might be better options now.

I did wonder if that would be the case, I’ll have to see what type of aerial I can get them

Anyone got an opinion on the Sony XH8096 series? A few sizes are on offer on Black Friday (about 100 euros off), and the price is around what I'd like to pay. Can't seem to find many reviews though, so it may actually be the German model or something.

If the model number is weird then it's probably a Black Friday model with cheap components.

I'm trying to decide on a new 55" TV to replace the girlfriends 32" Samsung that is too small, very slow, and crashes all the time.

For now it'll mostly be used for streaming TV (Netflix, Prime), watching terrestrial TV, and then next year I'll get a PS5.
Good HDR would be nice, I'd like the TV to last 5 years. Not too bothered about HDMI 2.1 as going from 1080P@30fps to 4K@60fps is plenty and I don't see many games even supporting 4k@120fps.

I've ruled out OLEDs as I got burn in on a (LCD) TV I bought back in the PS3 days and it annoyed me every time I used the TV. I don't want the worry whenever I see logo or watch the news.

The Sony XH9505 seems to tick all of the boxes, except it is around £1000. I don't mind spending that much for the perfect TV but I'll have to justify it to the girlfriend, so I'm keeping an eye out in case that one drops in price but my preferred budget is closer to £700.

The Hisense U8Q was also on my radar as it has good HDR for the price, but I hear it is terrible with motion and has lots of ghosting.

I wasn't looking at Samsungs as I hate our current Samsung TV, but I do like the anti-glare coating they have. HDR doesn't seem as good though.

Any other suggestions/recommendations?

Annoying my my TV has an overscan issue with Twitch in that it cuts off some of the left side of the image. Happens with the app on PS4, PS5 and Chromecast and of course there's no option to manually alter the display area in the TV settings.

Have you checked if it’s one of those features to prevent image retention? My LG has one, and it doesn’t seem obvious by the name but it was every so slightly cropping the image.
