They do, but there's only so much it can do with a bad image.

It's almost time for CES again so expect new TV news in the next few weeks.

It seems like Mini LED is the new thing for 2021.

LG to announce new TV tech at CES 2021

LG's non-OLED televisions have long been regarded inferior to their Samsung and Sony competition, but all that could be about to change with the announcement its LCD-based products are about to get some much needed love in 2021.

LG says it's going to be showing off its first QNED (quantum nano-emitting diode) TV at the virtual CES 2021 from January 11, with a further batch of 4K and 8K models up to 86-inches being added to the LG product line-up over the course of next year.

QNED (quantum nano-emitting diode), not to be confused with Samsung's QLED (quantum dot LED TV), will use Mini LED backlight technology, providing improved brightness and contrast when compared to traditional LED TVs and bringing the TVs closer in line with OLED televisions, but without any of the drawbacks. This Mini LED tech is already seen in TCL's 6 and 8-Series QLED TVs, and Samsung is also imminently expected to announce its own QNED product line.

LG says its new backlight “comprises up to almost 30,000 tiny LEDs that produce incredible peak brightness and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 when paired with up to 2,500 dimming zones and advanced local dimming zones.”

LG is not the only manufacturer to embrace Mini LED in 2021, with Apple expected to announce iPad and Mac refreshes using the technology.

Looks like being the year of the mini-LED...

Cant polish a turd

So my TV is slowly getting worse with its backlight lightly flickering even after an hour of use (the odd time it’s been less) and then continuing to flicker even when the TV has been turned off for a few seconds, starting to show its age now.

I was hoping it’d last me a bit longer but it looks like I might need to get myself an upgrade sooner rather than later. What’d be a good option with a max price of around £500? Obviously with a Series X to play on, 4K and HDR is a must (obviously 120hz would be nice but I don’t stand a chance at my price point) but there seems to be 4K and 4K UHD? I have no idea what the difference is between these. An optical port for my sound bar and then HDMI 2.0 (need 3 at minimum for Switch, Series X and Wii U) ideally, although are most HDMI ports 2.0 these days?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the midst of setting up my new TV. It's obvs that posting about this will be a minefield for the "no context" thread so I'll just roll with it!

I went from having a small one to a large one; my old screen was 26" (a 720p Sony set from 2008) and the new one 43" (4K Sony Android 2020). I didn't want a huge one as my living room isn't that big; the new size is taking a bit of getting used to but I'm enjoying it.

The colour quality is excellent and a real step up from before. The older screen was weak at displaying darker colours - black shades were hard to distinguish - but the new set is marvellous, with great contrast and brightness.

It's so neat being able to use apps to watch things like the iPlayer, Netflix and Disney Plus. Before I could only view these on my tablet and I found that I was increasingly doing this rather than using my old set. Android seems to work well with menus and apps loading up swiftly.

The upscaling of standard definition is pretty good but the 4K screen does tend to highlight the drawbacks of the lower quality input. My standard definition Freeview recorder display looks pretty weak compared to higher res stuff. Watching Full HD (1080p) content is far more pleasing to the eye whilst 4K (Disney Plus) is superb.

I'm even pleased with the sound. I don't like to have loud sound levels and the volume is fine for me; I don't have plans to get a sound bar or anything.

The remote is nice, too, with a Bluetooth connection and a metal surface. Apparently you can use Google or Alexa for voice control but I dunno if I'll be doing that!

A few hours of use and I am really enjoying it so far; a twelve-year jump from the older one really has felt like a leap forward. It's lovely to see my Switch pop up Animal Crossing so vividly! I'm now gonna spend a few hours sorting out the connections and taking a look at the settings .

...it's all set up now and I love it! 43" feels like a great size for my room and, man, the picture quality seems so good after using my older 720p set for many years. I've just run the Switch and a blu-ray (Fury Road ) through it and I was excited by it!

So, yeah - the Sony KD43XH8196BU gets a thumbs-up from me in these early hours of using it .

I know most places have multibuy 4K BR offers going, but Zavvi have a 2 for £20 going. (As well as 3 for £30 and 2 for £30 – different selection of films in each offer, naturally ) Picked up 1917 and Jaws. I've already seen 1917 in 4K many times, and am actually in the middle of re-watching it now but I know it's a film I'll miss once it comes off Prime.

Oh aye, definitely. I mean the Prime image blew me away the first time, but watching yesterday I noticed it took a good few minutes for image to become of acceptable quality. (I noticed artefacts on the chubby soldier's helmet - hello, No Context thread - in the first trench walk.)

Watched my first full film on my new TV tonight; Iron Man through Disney+.

I *think* it was 4K and I *assume* it had HDR... the picture image was terrific! The lighting effects were marvellous - I kept pausing it just to check out how bright the colours were :-).

Dang I'm glad I finally upgraded my TV. So pleased with it... the larger screen and improved colour really enhances the experience. I can now watch Netflix in style rather than using my mini tablet... hoorah!

A couple more things which don't show up when you search 'UHD' on BBC iPlayer: Black Narcissus and the latest episode of Doctor Who.

Oh boy, yeah, I watched Doctor Who last night and the 4K HDR presentation was phenomenal. The story not so much but the image quality was so impressive; especially the opening credit sequence :-D .
