I watched 1917 (streaming) using Filmmaker Mode. It juddered and shimmered like crazy on certain shots. I tested out the LG CX's TruMotion settings on a panning shot before Lance Cpl. Schofield crosses the downed bridge at Ecouste.

TM off - TM <6 = Noticeable judder and soap opera effect.

>7 - No judder but you now also have to put up with soap opera effect / movement looking "off" somehow.

I've decided to leave it on the 2nd pre-set. (Cinema or something.)

Apparently judder isn't always a failing of the TV; Film-makers have ways to reduce it at their end, both while filming (not panning beyond a particular speed) and in post-production (software). But also, certain things which are intrinsically linked to UHD (namely the large screen and sharper more colourful image) make otherwise acceptable levels of judder more noticeable. I'll have a look at the HDTV Test review of the CX to see if there's a way to lessen it without introducing the soap opera effect. When I'm able to, I'll also check the 1917 4K BR to see if it's any different on that.

Seriously everyone, 1917 is an amazing film. (Both as a film and a UHD showcase.) Get it watched if you haven't already. My favourite "oooh UHD!" scene is still it going all black at the double KO. And then the scene after with the flares. And also Schofield running through Ecouste with the orange and the black all about him. And, and, and...

I feel like Ignition is asking about 3:2 pull down but you’re looking for judder.

Fair enough, though Ignition does mention judder on panning shots and that's what I saw. No idea what good or bad 3:2 pull down is meant to look like. Hopefully someone else can chip in.

I need to get around to actually watching them  So far I've bought 11 (with another 2 on the way) but only watched 5. Subbing to Disney+ for Mando season 2 is holding me up.

You just missed out on the deal of the decade on amazon.
They had a TV on sale for just the low, low price of £10K.
It was the LG top of the range set.

03.21.09 LG CX firmware improves Dolby Vision but reduces HDR peak brightness in Game Mode. LG says a fix is coming in a future firmware update.

Just picked up Dark Knight Trilogy for £30.

I saw Vincent’s video about this yesterday, and it confirmed what I thought I’d already noticed - some posterisation on Disney+ using Dolby Vision. And it’s just happened again, in Thor: Ragnarok, just before Hela uses the eternal flame - huge chunky posterisation at the bottom of the screen. The 03.21.09 update isn’t even available to me, so I’ll have to put up with it for now, but at least it means I don’t yet get the game mode brightness drop (though it sounds like it’s not very noticeable).

Have you played Ghost of Tsushima yet? Play Ghost of Tsushima. It is stupendous looking. Probably the best looking game I've played on my PS5.

Not yet. Still clearing the initial rush of games I got with the PS4, so figured I might as well wait for it to price drop.

Get a new one anyway.

It’s pretty much what I’m leaning towards!

Following on from Sony, LG has also announced their OLEDs (which Sony use) will be brighter this year:

LG has said its new range of OLED for 2021 will be able to produce higher brightness levels.

During its press conference it said its new "OLED Evo" will benefit from " a new luminous element" that would deliver "punchy images with high clarity, detail and realism".

The 4K G1 “OLED Evo” model is the exclusive recipient of this newly enhanced red/blue emitters. The G1 will be LG’s brightest 4K OLED yet. The new C1 meanwhile bumps up the screen size to 83-inches.

For those that want the ultimate HDR image, their NanoCell LCD TVs, which go up to 8K, are claiming 3000 nits using MiniLED tech.

3000 nits is insane, you don't need that for a home.

TCL has announced at CES that its popular 6-Series TVs will now support 8K resolutions in 2021

The 6-Series TVs offer full array local dimming, quantum dot and mini-LED technology.

Though TCL hasn’t yet announced the pricing of the new 2021 R648 models, if previous models are any indication prices could range between $1,000 - $1,500 for their 8K TV.

For those on a further budget, TCL says that it will still be producing 4K versions of the 6-Series, at least for 2021.

The speed at which Samsung, LG and now TCL have got their pricing down for 8K TVs has surprised me.

Still bugger all to watch on them though.

Got the new CX update which is meant to fix the game HDR issue from the last update. I predict I won't be able to tell the difference.
