This place generally serves as my primary social output, aside from my immediate family. I chat to you lot more than the friends I'd consider to be my closest. Maybe ten years ago, I might have thought that was an odd thing to say. But I'm quite comfortable with it now... to the extent that this page of this thread has made me wonder, why don't we all just be friends?

I only really keep touch with my IRL friends remotely nowadays - WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, the occasional group Skype call. Very rarely we might arrange to meet in person but inevitably only a small proportion of the group can make it.

Pretty sure we could just replicate that if we wanted to? (Maybe apart from the meeting in person. Unless it turns out we all live closer than we realise) We have the same interests after all. The only thing preventing us from deciding we're not friends is centuries of social convention.

Am I misreading the mood here? Anyone wanna be friends?

To be honest I'd count you as a friend, or at least someone I like who has quite a few shared interests(which is to say, a friend :lol:

). Like I say, there are a few people on here I'd count as genuine friends - not to name names, but there are even some longstanding members on here that were largely responsible for helping me push through my parents' initial separation when I was fourteen...in 2004! And a whole decade of awful that came after it, too. If you can't call someone a mate after that, when can you start?

There's precedent for forum meets as well, though. I haven't just met good friends through them, but someone on here introduced me to Guitar Hero through a meet, which has stuck with me for almost twenty years. I'd never be able to set another one up, but there are quite a few folks on here I'd genuinely love to have a pint with and go to a football game or something.

I'm down. Been saying about doing a pub trip for years but obviously that hasn't been on the cards until recently. Plus I think a lot of us are quite spread out across the country. Maybe we can try organise something for the summer?

Another thing I should mention, I've kept in contact with friends a lot over lockdown shenanigans via group video chats/discord calls. I've since learned they are a million times more awkward than I initially thought and I think they're part of the reason I lost a lot of confidence. I had gotten so used to the video chat format where realistically only 1 person could talk at a time and everyone else just kinda has to wait and listen, that I literally did just that when returning to real life conversations. In video chats you really gotta pick your moments to jump in else no one hears you, but ofc it's different irl, but I was still used to 'waiting my turn' cause I just never really thought about it. Now I just inappropriately yell at everyone all the time no matter what's happening. Back to normal.

I also 100% agree on making friends through common interests. Since I joined my local running group I have made friends I would never have made otherwise through that shared interest of running. If it wasn't for that my friendship group would be about 3 people.

TBH anyone who is ever friends with me I find amazing as I think I'm really weird and not that much fun anyway.

I don't have many friends these days myself irl. I have a few and far between due to people moving, work and other stuff. I cut a chunk off because they were always after some sort of drama and I'd grown tired of it all.

I consider a lot of you guys my friends on here. I've known some of you for longer than I thought when I think about it. I've known old man ploiper for ages now and I saw Vermy posting quite often back in the ONM days.

You've heard me on discord, that's normally how I am. It would be lovely to meet up with you guys for a drink at some point!

When it gets to summer, I'm sure arrangements will start being made to do a group meet.

Definitely not at a water park, though. That'd probably be an awkward one.

I actually really like Irn Bru but I definitely couldn't describe its flavour relative to any normal food or drink!

I guess it's how like bubblegum is an artificial flavour that is best described as bubblegum
