Sounds like an interesting thing to be doing. I'm looking on the website and there are plenty of places in just the UK. When you do start up there, would you share some experiences?

Will do. I have been practicing on my uncles farm and I've done dairy farming before via Woofing. Will definitely share experiences when I've gone to the new goat farm, maybe have a Woofing Blog thread.

Meh, get a service by providing a service. All's fair.

Yes, it’s the best fun you can have without having to spend any money.

Ah voluntary serfdom. Presumably the farm is making money, which kind of sours the whole "volunteering" side of things.

Great that you're getting something out of it, I'm sure it's good character building, but I definitely wouldn't do it - I've got a paying job!

This is the "I sleep in a big bed with my wife" of forum posts. So harsh.

Sleeping in a big bed with OR's wife is my paying job.

 I didn't mean it to come across that badly. I don't like people's work being taken advantage of without fair recompense is all!

Part of why it pays so well is for the discretion :x

Free rent and food seems fair, no?

From what I read, you help for about six hours a day, learning about different things relating to organic farming and becoming an intergrated part of their family for the duration of your stay. Depending on the person, they'll even treat you days out and introduce you to even more people down at their local pubs and other places. It's built on being understanding towards each other, and the contract - as much as it is one - can be rightfully broken by host or guest at any time if things aren't working out.

The idea with a job is normally to have some money left over after necessary living costs (food, rent) so that you can enjoy leisure activities and save, be it for something big like a house deposit or just for security against the day you don't have a job but still need money to live.

What you should do is total up the hours you work every week at minimum wage - that's how much you're paying in rent and food costs. I imagine it's not a great deal. (The other way of looking at is totaling up how much your host is spending on food and losing in rent to host you - it probably works out the equivalent of paying less than minimum wage, although the rent side is hard to estimate).

Regardless, if it works for you that's great, clearly the intention is not to replicate a work environment and I hope you enjoy it and find it rewarding. This is more my reaction to you recommending the rest of us should give it a try - I have immediate hang-ups that would prevent me doing so, even forgetting the impracticality of it!

If it's the choice between that and not working, then maybe it's great experience too that doesn't cost you anything. Personally I'd feel better volunteering for a charity or similar that isn't profiting from my freely given work, but hey we live in a world where unpaid internships are a thing so what do I know.

I'm devastated!! Me and my friends entered a quiz show. I thought I'd do great. We all dressed up as different iterations of Link to make it more entertaining.

I thought I'd do great but I kept losing. Didn't know a single answer.

Eventually I got booted off.

The host turned to me and said:

You are the Weakest Link. Goodbye.

Thanks OR. Yeah hopefully it's rewarding, and yes at the moment I'm unable to find work elsewhere. You need experience to get a job, you need a job to get experience. So by doing this, I get to have a rewarding experience, free rent and hopefully a glowing recommendation on my CV when my time there is finished, so that it's easier to find a job.
