Heathrow's third runway gets go-ahead from Chris Grayling

Rest of the UK overlooked as per usual. When will infrastructure investment be spent north of the M25?

I reckon when Brexit hits they're going to be focusing even more on London.

Heathrow needed a third runway but then it should have been built at least thirty years ago and now I think it’s too late and they should have explored a new airport altogether. Very few, if any of our airports are in the right places as they were all built on old airfields years ago that are no longer in the right places for modern Britain. They also can’t cope with expansion as housing and industrial estates have been built close to the airport boundaries.

I'm in serious danger of not getting Dual here but I assume you have heard of HS2?

I think you're right. Proposals are in for Crossrail 2 for example.

The rest of the UK is already suffering and it's going to get worse.

Isn't HS2 so you can get *slightly* faster to London, though? I feel like West Midlands Railways needs to improve a bit before we get yet another rail service that's always delayed.

Yes and I'm very much in favour of it. Although I believe it is not enough.

Also have you seen where they're putting this thing!?

Would love to be a home owner there waiting for the Compulsory Purchase letter to come through

Should fill in the Thames if they've ran out of room.

The north always moans that the south gets all the infrastructure investment, yet here in central southern england, the transport network has had no meaningful investment for at least the last 25 years (see Stonehenge, the A27, and the Cardiff-Portsmouth rail line as some basic examples).

Well the southern part of the M25 anyway.

Anyway it's quite simple when the rest of the UK starts pulling in some money, they can start having some nice things. ;)

Yes, that’s how directions work.

Can't pull in money without nice things, can't have nice things without pulling in money. :x

We need a PM who is willing to take the risk of entrusting the non-London parts of the country with things.

Isn't that why Brexit happened?

Phase 1 is due to shave about 20 minutes off Birmingham - London travel. Big whoop.

Phase 2 is much more important and impactful, taking an hour off journeys Manchester - London, and Leeds - Birmingham each. This phase isn't due to start running until 2033 though. :fp:

The Manchester and Leeds branches should have been constructed first. All the first phase is aiming for is to turn Birmingham into London commuter belt territory.

Had no idea the Manchester stretch was so far away. Good grief :dread: Civil Engineering must be an absolute breeze of a job. Nothing will ever actually get done before you've retired.

Considering how many people you always see waiting for London-headed trains in the mornings i don't think they need anything else to help make it a commuter haven. It's utterly frustrating how places think London is the place to be while the rest of the country just gets more and more run down.

Although I'm glad they're not expanding Birmingham International. I've got a view of the runway from my office window so a second runway would probably come straight through where I sit :shifty:

Things used to be planned and built quickly in this country, the early motorways sprang up pretty fast during the 50's and 60's from what i've seen and read.

Over the years though, big infrastructure projects have since found themselves subject to far more scrutiny, much more red tape/legislation, and protests from enviornmental lobbies (some of which are of the opinion that nothing should ever be built anywhere for any reason), which has led to the situation we find ourselves in today where very little gets built, and that which does go ahead is always subject to many years of delays.
