I also got stung with an additional 675 deposit requirement because of my current financial situation which seems counterintuative if you ask me but there it is

managed to buy a mattress and bedding in the sales on monthly strap so whilst I wont have a bedframe or anything at least I wont be on the floor

due to start work again next week part time so my wages will be safe for a little bit at least

Sorry to hear about the messing about dude, hopefully this is the last of it and it's smooth sailing from here on.

Things are starting to get back on track overall by the sounds of things and you're doing great working through it at a pace that works for you.

Extra deposit was probably a banana split credit check thing looking at your cash flow in current accounts and other accounts your ex might have nuked.

When things are more secure, you might consider asking for the extra deposit back (but they may want to re-run the referencing again and charge you for that). The amount of loopholes you have to go to just to borrow a room these days is insane.

Even with the same estate agent, in the same town, when we were forced to move because landlord sold up, we were forced then to go through referencing again because "new property, new landlord, new references". Because these days you require an income of at least twice your rent, otherwise you require a guarantor, I had to pay for that again as well, even though it's the same guarantor. What a load of bollocks. What's more valuable, excessive referencing and poking around or three strawberry floating years of consistent rent payments with the *same agent*. strawberry floating ridiculous.

my post tax income is 4x my rent but I have zero liquidity and huge debts right now, last year I basically redid the majority of furniture and tech and rooms in the house and most of that was spread over credit - I still have the credit but none of the assets, so in essence 50% or so of all of my income is just burning in the ether

it really makes me feel for homeless people or people currently of no fixed address because getting on your feet must be impossible. Im finding it really hard but I at least have my parents address and an employer who would reference me and most amazingly, you guys helping me with a deposit essentially

the world is a mess and landlords are vultures

also I would expect a lot of people would think like 'sell your car' and stuff like that, and trust me, the few assets I do have that Im not stuck with Ive tried to leverage - the car is a gigantic drain on me but I have no ability to get rid of it without murdering myself for the future - most of my focus is just on making it to october somehow when I can release maybe 20k worth of bad juju and dramatically scale back on everything

I was living my life like a 2 adults 1 child family and she had a bankruptcy in the past so couldnt have credit and it was all on me, a mistake Ill never make again, but I didnt anticipate this outcome

Only reason I got with my current agent is with an employment reference for a job I left a month later, I've been self employed since then so income is obviously nowhere near it is supposed to be

So yeah having a job and reference helps even if you are off work at the minute, I've genuinely been worried about failing to meet rent and defaulting in the past so I know what those worries are like. I hope you are able to manage with the current situation for a time and build things up again. I don't want to get into it in case it's painful but there are perhaps things you can pursue later on too that could recover some of your assets.
