This is probably really obvious, but my Mum needs some help in charging her Kindle Paperwhite. She plugs it in to the computer but all she's getting is this & the image isn't moving:

What is she doing wrong? In fact what does that graphic even mean?

It's possible her computer has a low-voltage USB port, particularly if it's a laptop or she's using a USB hub. I know some devices (such as the Raspberry Pi) won't work when plugged into that kind of port.

Has she tried plugging it into a mains socket directly? My Kindle came with a cable for that purpose.

You need to 'eject' the Kindle (via Windows) before it charges.

It makes no sense, but that's 100% the problem.

Edit: now I'm not so sure . But try that anyway.

Ah, that'll be it, then. I guess that's not a problem on OS X because I've never heard of it before!

EDIT: No, no, I'm sure you're right!

The Kindle does come with an e-manual... just turn on your Kindle to read it. :P

Or look here.

The "eject" this is mental but yeah that's right.

When on it mounts as a USB drive on the PC and for some reason the Kindle then ignores the power at that point.
